Meranda Takes Over Lagos Speaker’s Office, Hosts Prayer Session

Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, officially assumed office on Monday at the Assembly Complex. Videos shared on social media captured her supporters’ offering prayers and giving thanks as she moved into the Speaker’s office.

Heightened security measures were observed at the complex ahead of Monday’s plenary session, which has drawn attention amid rumors of possible tensions in the House.

Former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was removed from office on January 13, 2025, following allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation, recently claimed he still holds the Speaker’s position. Obasa, while denying the allegations, challenged the lawmakers to provide evidence to back their claims.

Monday’s plenary marks the third session presided over by Meranda since Obasa’s removal, with the former Speaker notably absent from the previous two sittings.

Belgian Footballer Nainggolan Detained in Cocaine Trafficking Investigation

Former Belgian international Radja Nainggolan was arrested on Monday as part of an investigation into cocaine trafficking through the port of Antwerp, the Brussels prosecutor’s office confirmed.

Authorities conducted multiple raids across the country, leading to the arrest of several suspects, including Nainggolan. Prosecutors revealed that the investigation focuses on the importation of cocaine from South America to Europe via the port of Antwerp and its distribution within Belgium. Further details were not disclosed.

Nainggolan, 36, who hails from Antwerp, recently came out of retirement to join a lower-division Belgian club, extending a career that included 30 national team appearances and six goals. The midfielder, known for his time at clubs like Roma, Inter Milan, and Cagliari, had been without a team since last summer before signing with second-tier Belgian side Lokeren last week. He made an immediate impact, scoring in his debut during a 1-1 draw against K. Lierse.

Previously, Nainggolan returned to Belgium in 2021 to play for Royal Antwerp after leaving Italy. His stint at Antwerp ended in early 2023 following several controversies, including a suspension for smoking an e-cigarette on the bench. Known as a talented yet unconventional player, Nainggolan’s career has been as notable for his performances on the pitch as for his off-field antics.

Timileyin Ajayi Denies Charges in Salome Adaidu’s Murder Case

Timileyin Ajayi, the prime suspect in the murder of Salome Adaidu, was arraigned at the High Court of Justice in Lafia, Nasarawa State. He is facing a charge of culpable homicide punishable by death under Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria.

During the hearing before Justice Simon Aboki, Ajayi pleaded not guilty. The court adjourned the trial to March 17–20 for further proceedings.

Speaking after the arraignment, the prosecuting counsel, Stanley Nwaforagwu, expressed confidence in the case, stating, "We have overwhelming evidence to sustain the charge, and we are optimistic that justice will be served." Defense counsel Joseph Tukur emphasized his role in ensuring the prosecution proves their case beyond a reasonable doubt, noting, “It is not my place to prove the case but to ensure the law is followed.” Representing the deceased’s family, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Jibrin Okutekpa highlighted the importance of the case, adding, “We are here to ensure justice is done.”

Ajayi, 32, was arrested for the gruesome murder of his alleged girlfriend, Salome Adaidu, a 24-year-old NYSC member serving in Abuja. Salome was killed during a visit to Ajayi’s residence in the Papalana area of New Karshi, Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa State. Police reports revealed that Ajayi used a knife and machete to kill and dismember her body. He was apprehended on January 12, 2025, while attempting to dispose of her remains.

In a chilling confession during an interview, Ajayi admitted to the crime, claiming it was unplanned but fueled by jealousy over alleged infidelity. “I killed her because we don’t have each other all the time,” he stated. Ajayi added that he found incriminating chats on her phone, which led to his actions. Despite the nature of his crime, he showed no remorse, saying, “I don’t have any regrets because life is reciprocal.”

The case continues to attract national attention, with many calling for justice for Salome Adaidu.
