Court Clears Fani-Kayode of Forgery Charges, Rules No Case to Answer

The Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, has acquitted and discharged former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, of charges of medical forgery filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe delivered the ruling after considering a "no case" submission made by Fani-Kayode’s lawyer, Norrison Quakers (SAN). The judge ruled that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against the former minister and upheld the submission, stating that the EFCC did not link Fani-Kayode to the alleged offense.

Fani-Kayode was facing 12 counts, accused of using forged medical reports in proceedings before Justice Daniel Osiagor of the Federal High Court in Lagos. The EFCC claimed that he presented false medical documents to delay his trial in a case involving an alleged N4.9 billion fraud.

One of the charges read: “That you, Femi Fani-Kayode, on or about the 11th day of October, 2021, in Lagos, fraudulently used a false document titled 'Medical Report on Olufemi Fani-Kayode 60 Years/Male/Hosp. No. 00345 DATED 11/10/2021' before the Federal High Court, Lagos Judicial Division in charge No. FHC/L/251C/2016.” Another count similarly involved a forged medical document presented in March 2021.

The EFCC argued that the creation and use of these documents were in violation of Section 369 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015. During the trial, Kubwa General Hospital in Abuja denied that Fani-Kayode was a patient, with the hospital’s head of medical records testifying that the medical reports presented by Fani-Kayode were not issued by the hospital.

Additionally, a prosecution witness, Abidat Bukola, claimed that Fani-Kayode paid her a total of N820,000 for four forged medical reports. She testified that Fani-Kayode dictated the contents of these reports. However, the former minister denied the allegations.

Police Confirm 10 Dead in Suspected Herders’ Attack on Ebonyi Community

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed that 10 people were killed in a suspected herders' attack on Amagu village in Ishielu Local Government Area on Sunday. Armed assailants raided the community in the early hours, killing residents and setting houses ablaze.

Sources suggest the attack was a reprisal following the killing of cattle in the area. A local resident stated that members of the IPOB’s Eastern Security Network were responsible for the cattle deaths, not the villagers. Among those killed was a Pentecostal pastor.

Police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu confirmed the casualties and reported that several houses were selectively burned, with other properties also destroyed. He added that security operatives were deployed to the area immediately after the attack, and normalcy has since been restored.

Herders' activities have been a major security concern in Nigeria’s South-East, with numerous incidents of violence, killings, and destruction of farmland linked to their presence in the region.

Court Sentences Murderers of Ogun Couple and Son to Death by Hanging

An Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta has sentenced three individuals to death by hanging for the murder of Kehinde and Bukola Fatinoye and their son, Oreoluwa, on New Year's Day two years ago.

In a judgment that lasted over three hours, Justice Basirat Adebowale convicted Adekanbi Lekan, the deceased couple’s driver, along with Odetola Ahmed and Adeniyi Waheed. The trio was found guilty of brutally killing the family before setting their corpses ablaze.

They were initially arraigned alongside Fadairo Temitope (Lekan’s wife), Adekanbi Adenike (Lekan’s mother), Owolaja Aanuoluwapo, Usman Azeez, Abass Odetola, and Adewusi Lukman on a 24-count charge. The charges included conspiracy to commit armed robbery, murder, arson, escape from lawful custody, perverting the course of justice, and receiving stolen property.

Justice Adebowale ruled that the prosecution had proven its case against the three primary defendants beyond a reasonable doubt. She emphasized the brutality of their crimes and stated that they did not deserve leniency.

The court sentenced the first, second, and third defendants to death by hanging or lethal injection for multiple charges, along with life imprisonment with hard labor and additional sentences of up to 14 years.

“The sentence of this court on Adekambi Lekan in respect of count II is that he be hanged by the neck until he is dead or by lethal injection,” the judge declared. “May God have mercy on your soul.”

Lekan’s wife, Fadairo Temitope, was convicted on two counts and sentenced to four years in prison, to run concurrently. His mother was found guilty on one count and sentenced to one year in prison, starting from her remand date.

The tragic incident occurred after the Fatinoye family attended a crossover church service on New Year's Eve 2022. Upon returning home, they were attacked by their driver and his accomplices, who murdered them and set their bodies on fire. Their son, Oreoluwa, and an adopted son, Olorunyomi Felix, were tied up and thrown into the Ogun River.

February 4, 2025 FEC Approves N4.8bn for HIV Treatment Following US Policy Change

FEC Approves N4.8bn for HIV Treatment Following US Policy Change

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved N4.8 billion for the procurement of 150,000 HIV treatment packs, ensuring uninterrupted care for people living with the virus. This decision, announced after the FEC meeting on Monday, reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening domestic funding for HIV treatment amid shifting global aid policies.

The move comes in response to concerns over recent US policy changes affecting the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a key source of HIV funding in Nigeria. Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, emphasized the importance of sustaining HIV treatment efforts as international funding dynamics evolve.

Pate noted that while global partners have long supported HIV treatment, the federal government is now prioritizing direct investments in life-saving interventions for People Living with HIV (PLHIV). “This is an important signal that the federal government is committed to ensuring that life-saving treatments remain accessible, despite the changing dynamics in external support,” he stated.

Nigeria’s HIV/AIDS response has benefited significantly from international donors, particularly PEPFAR, which has provided billions of dollars in funding over the past two decades. However, a temporary suspension of PEPFAR funding followed an executive order by former US President Donald Trump, which paused multiple foreign aid programs and put millions of beneficiaries at risk.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has since granted an “emergency humanitarian waiver,” allowing PEPFAR to resume operations in 55 countries, including Nigeria. Despite this, the uncertainty surrounding global aid prompted the Nigerian government to develop a sustainability plan to safeguard HIV treatment programs.

Pate disclosed that the FEC discussed the implications of US policy changes on health initiatives, particularly those addressing HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria. In response, the government has formed a committee comprising representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Health, Defense, and Environment, alongside the Governors’ Forum, to develop a transition and sustainability plan.

“This is to ensure that Nigerians receiving treatment do not face disruptions,” Pate explained, adding that the committee will assess the impact of US policy shifts and devise strategies to maintain critical health programs.

While acknowledging the significant contributions of the US over the past two decades, Pate stressed that Nigeria is preparing to reduce its reliance on foreign aid. “While we greatly appreciate the support of the US government and look forward to continued collaboration, Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu is focused on transforming the health sector through national systems and domestic financing,” he said.

The ultimate goal, according to Pate, is to ensure that no patient currently receiving HIV treatment is left without care as the country strengthens its healthcare system through sustainable local funding.
