Police Arrest Nine Suspects in Connection with Anambra Lawmaker’s Murder

The Anambra State Police Command, in collaboration with state vigilante operatives, has arrested nine suspects allegedly involved in the murder of Anambra State House of Assembly member, Justice Azuka.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnaghe Itam, confirmed the arrests during a press briefing on Friday. Azuka, who represented Onitsha North Constituency 1, was abducted on December 24, 2024, in Onitsha. His decomposing body was discovered on the 2nd Niger Bridge on Thursday by a joint security team comprising police officers and vigilante personnel.

During the operation, law enforcement officers recovered two pump-action guns from the suspects. One of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound to the leg following an exchange of gunfire with the police.

The arrested individuals have been identified as:

• Ugochukwu Onuorah (30)

• Ikemefuna Ossai (20)

• Ikenna Orugu (27)

• Chibuike Obiefuna (19)

• Chinonso Olisa (19)

• Chinedu Okoli (21)

• David Ojini (25)

• Peter Sunday (20), who was described as the most notorious among them, bearing a tattoo on his chest that reads “No peace 4 d Government.”

Additionally, CP Itam announced the arrest of Chidiebere Nwosu, a suspected kidnapper apprehended in Uruagu, Nnewi. Several of his gang members, who had previously attacked police personnel from the Rapid Response Squad, were neutralized during the operation on October 3, 2024.

The Commissioner further revealed that over 100 notorious criminals had been eliminated, and multiple criminal hideouts across locations such as Ufuma, Eziowelle, Achalla, and Ogbaru had been dismantled.

He expressed his appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for his leadership and support. He also thanked Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, other security agencies, the media, civil society groups, and residents for their cooperation in improving security within the state.

Reassuring the public, CP Itam emphasized the police’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, vowing that law enforcement agencies would not take the trust of the people for granted.

Lagos Introduces Speed Limit Monitors, Imposes ₦50,000 Fine for Violators

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in partnership with Huawei Technologies, has launched four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites to enhance traffic monitoring, detect speeding, and enforce road safety regulations.

During a press briefing on Thursday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, stated that the newly deployed systems would complement the existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and other traffic management solutions.

“The checkpoint sites are specifically designed to detect speeding violations. One is located at Alapere, Ogudu Road, with a speed limit of 80 km/h, while the other is positioned at Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, with a speed limit of 60 km/h. These installations are strategically placed to curb overspeeding, which remains a leading cause of road accidents,” Osiyemi explained.

In addition to speed monitoring, the government has also introduced e-police sites at Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road to detect a range of traffic violations. “These e-police sites will monitor offenses such as running red lights, lane indiscipline, illegal U-turns, and reverse driving on highways,” he added.

To ensure compliance, Osiyemi warned that enforcement would begin immediately. Violators of traffic laws will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service department, detailing their infractions and the corresponding penalties. The fines include ₦20,000 for running a red light and ₦50,000 for exceeding speed limits.

“This initiative is not intended to be punitive but to promote responsible driving behavior, reduce accidents, and enhance overall road safety. Our objective is to save lives, protect property, and create a more orderly transportation system in Lagos,” the commissioner emphasized.

The briefing was attended by the Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa; representatives from Huawei Technologies; and key directors from the ministry.

Gunmen Attack Lagos Community, Killing 2 and Injuring Several

The Ijegun Egba community in Ori Ade Local Government Area of Lagos State was thrown into chaos as gunmen stormed the area, leaving two people dead and several others injured.

The victims have been identified as Gbenga Areagbo, a 40-year-old man who lived with sickle cell disease, and Oladapo Olukoya. In a shocking turn of events, the assailants reportedly fled with their bodies.

Residents, now gripped with fear, said the attackers came from across the riverine area. Witnesses recounted how thugs stormed the Ijegun Egba jetty, robbing people of their valuables and cash.

A resident, Kudus Fadiku, alleged that the assailants were from Ibasa. He recalled a prior attack on Wasiu Ademola, a local, last Thursday. “They attacked Wasiu, inflicting serious injuries on him. They attempted to abduct him via the river, but he managed to convince them that he was not from our community,” Fadiku said.

Another resident, identified as Kazeem, revealed that the matter was reported to the Satellite Town Police Division. However, just three days after the attack on Wasiu, armed men returned to Zone 2 in the community. “They were identifying locals from the crowd, assisted by an informant. When they couldn’t find their intended targets, they resorted to robbing both residents and passersby,” he explained.

Community leader Saeed Ayinde confirmed that the killings had also been reported to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Alagbon, Lagos.

Recounting the harrowing incident, he said, “The hoodlums arrived in three vehicles and motorcycles, armed with guns and cutlasses. I was sitting with Lateef Arowolo at Ade Oshodi Junction when they stormed the area. They asked a young man if he was Lateef. When he shook his head, they shot him at close range and attacked him with axes. Afterward, they took the bodies away through the jetty.”

Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, with the case adjourned until March 26, 2025, for further proceedings.
