Chef Dammy Embarks on Professional Culinary Training in Lagos

Nigerian chef Damilola Adeparusi, popularly known as Chef Dammy, has officially commenced her professional culinary training at the Hospitality Business School (HBS) in Lagos.

Chef Dammy, who gained national recognition for her cook-a-thon attempt in June 2023, is now pursuing a professional diploma in culinary arts on a full scholarship. The scholarship, provided by Horecabb Mentors, covers her training in the Professional Culinary Art Chef course.

Expressing her excitement on Instagram, Chef Dammy shared a photo of herself in her new school uniform, writing, "My first time in a school uniform as a proper pro. Chef in the making."

She humorously recounted her initial shyness and the warm welcome from fellow students. “I ran back into the hostel to go and blush. When I stepped out, I started hearing, ‘Chef Dammy, you’re finally wearing the uniform, so fine!’ So I ran back inside, took selfies, and blushed again.”

Chef Dammy also expressed deep gratitude to Nigerian food entrepreneur Oluwatobi Fletcher, popularly known as Ofadaboy, along with the Group CEO of Horecabb Mentors, Dr. Mekwuye Eric, and the Ekiti State Government for their support in making her enrollment possible.

“A big thank you to Ofadaboy and the CEO of HBS for making this a reality. Special appreciation to my amazing lawyer. I’m also deeply grateful to His Excellency, Governor Biodun Oyebanji, and Her Excellency, Dr. Yemi Oyebanji, for their unwavering support.”

The scholarship, a collaboration between HBS, Ofadaboy, and the Ekiti State Government, was initially announced in December 2024 at the Ofada Rice Day Festival. In January, Dr. Mekwuye confirmed that Chef Dammy would also receive five additional free courses through the HBS Lagos Scholarship, ensuring she becomes a well-rounded chef.

February 9, 2025 Labour Party Suspends Rivers Caretaker Chairman Hilda Dokubo

Labour Party Suspends Rivers Caretaker Chairman Hilda Dokubo

The Labour Party (LP) in Rivers State has indefinitely suspended its Caretaker Chairman, Hilda Dokubo, following multiple petitions accusing her of gross misconduct, extortion, and negligence.

Dokubo’s suspension was initiated by her ward, Ward 3 of Asari-Toru Local Government Area (ASALGA). In a statement dated February 2, 2025, the suspension letter was signed by key ward executives, including Chairman O. C. Princewill, Vice Chairman Pastor Lucky Mac-Jaja Amachree, Secretary Florence Solomon, and Women Leader Iwowari George.

The letter, addressed to the Labour Party’s National Chairman, called for an immediate investigation into Dokubo’s alleged actions.

Among the allegations leveled against her are the unlawful inflation of fees for the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) screening and nomination forms during the recent local government elections, compromising party interests by negotiating party positions, and failing to properly account for party funds, allegedly diverting them for personal gain.

Dokubo is also accused of attempting to persuade other Labour Party candidates to sell out and employing a “divide and rule” strategy since her appointment as caretaker chairman, which has reportedly weakened the party’s structures in the state.

According to the statement, she failed to address the allegations despite multiple invitations. As a result, the party decided to suspend her from all activities indefinitely, pending further investigations.

The statement outlined specific findings, including claims that she inflated councilorship nomination fees from N5,000 to N8,000 and chairmanship fees from N10,000 to N15,000, adding a “service charge.” It also accused her of undermining the party’s interest during her 2023 House of Representatives election run by negotiating party positions and failing to address election irregularities such as missing result sheets.

In response, Dokubo dismissed the suspension, stating, "There was no suspension; some people were just trying their luck."

Alleged Cybercrime: EFCC Presents First Witness as Foreign Nationals Seek Plea Bargain

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced the trial of individuals implicated in an alleged cybercrime operation, bringing forth its first witness in a case involving 193 foreign nationals and 599 Nigerians. These individuals were apprehended during a coordinated raid on the Big Leaf Building in Lagos.

At the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Friday, the EFCC presented seven of the foreign defendants before Justice Deinde Dipeolu—one for arraignment and six for the commencement of trial. However, the six defendants opted for a plea bargain and, through their legal representatives, requested a brief adjournment to initiate discussions with the anti-graft agency.

Meanwhile, the trial proceeded against Xiao Hong Will, who faces a three-count charge alongside their company, Genting International Ltd. The prosecution, led by Bilikisu Buhari Bala, called its first witness, Roland Turaki, an unemployed cybersecurity student, who provided testimony regarding his employment experience with the defendant’s company.

Turaki recounted how he was recruited through an online job advertisement and subsequently trained to engage in deceptive online interactions with European individuals. He detailed the structured nature of the fraudulent scheme, explaining that employees were instructed to pose as women, cultivate trust with unsuspecting victims, and ultimately transfer them to senior operators within the company. The witness also alleged that operations were closely monitored by Chinese supervisors and that employees were subjected to intense pressure, including financial penalties and threats of termination without pay.

Furthermore, Turaki described the stringent work conditions, citing the presence of armed security personnel restricting employees’ movement. He testified that despite recognizing the dubious nature of the activities, he hesitated to leave due to concerns over unpaid wages and the security measures in place.

The EFCC has indicated its intention to present further evidence, including the desktop computer assigned to the witness and the instructional materials he was required to study. However, due to the volume of seized digital evidence—estimated at 300 to 400 desktops—the prosecution sought a short adjournment to facilitate proper identification of the relevant materials.

Justice Dipeolu subsequently adjourned the case to March 18 for the continuation of the trial.
