Traders Urge Ondo Governor for Assistance After Market Fire

Traders at the Caring Heart Market in Okitipupa, Ondo State, have called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for assistance following a fire that destroyed their shops and goods valued at over ₦50 million.

The fire, which broke out at midnight on Thursday, affected 18 shops. The cause remains unclear, but traders lamented significant losses, including cash, deep freezers, generators, stabilizers, fans, umbrellas, and frozen goods.

Mrs. Faye Morayo, a frozen foods seller, shared her plight, revealing that she had just stocked her shop with fish, turkey, and other items for the holiday season. She estimated her losses at over ₦3 million, including three large freezers, two generators, and stabilizers. “I borrowed money to stock my shop. Now, everything is gone. I plead with Governor Aiyedatiwa to help us financially, as we have nothing left,” she said.

Another trader, Bosede Enufo, a widow with six children, said she lost goods worth over ₦7 million. Overwhelmed by the devastation, she also appealed to the governor for support, praying for blessings upon him and his family.

Mrs. Modupe Akimtimiwa, another victim, estimated her losses at over ₦1 million and requested financial aid from the governor, along with assistance in rebuilding the destroyed shops. She noted that many traders were already burdened by loans they had taken to sustain their businesses.

Chief Florence Irinyemi, the Iyalaje of Idepe-Okitipupa, narrated how the market's security guard raised the alarm about the fire around 1:00 am. She expressed gratitude to Oba Michael Adetoye-Obatuga, the Jegun of Idepe Okitipupa, for swiftly contacting the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to cut off power, preventing further damage.

Chief Irinyemi also called on the state government to revive the dormant Okitipupa Fire Service to ensure quicker responses to emergencies. She appealed for financial aid and reconstruction of the affected shops, emphasizing the severe impact on the traders.

EPL: Southampton Coach Confirms Onuachu Fit for Tottenham Clash

Southampton manager Russell Martin has confirmed that Paul Onuachu is fit and available for selection once again. The Nigerian striker has not featured for the Saints since picking up an injury during their Premier League match against Liverpool last month.

As Southampton prepares to host Tottenham Hotspur at St Mary's Stadium on Sunday, Martin revealed that Onuachu will be included in the matchday squad.

"Jan Bednarek’s back, Paul Onuachu’s back, which is really good, and apart from that, we’re all good," Martin said during a press conference.

Onuachu, who has yet to score in 16 league appearances since joining Southampton, has faced challenges in finding the net. However, Martin expressed his appreciation for the striker’s contribution to the team, despite his goal drought.

"Paul gives us a real alternative option that’s different from anyone in the squad and most people in the league actually," Martin added. "He was really unfortunate with the timing of his injury, as he was in such a good place and was going to really help us. Now, he’s going to help us moving forward."

Court Grants Yahaya Bello ₦500m Bail in Alleged ₦80bn Fraud Case

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, in the sum of ₦500 million. Presiding over the hearing on Friday, Justice Emeka Nwite outlined the conditions for bail, requiring Bello to present two sureties with properties in Abuja.

The court specified that the sureties must swear affidavits of means, and the title documents of their properties must be verified by the Deputy Chief Registrar. Additionally, Bello is required to surrender his international passport to the court and provide two recent passport photographs along with those of his sureties.

Until the bail conditions are met, Justice Nwite ordered that Bello remain in custody at the Kuje Correctional Center in Abuja.

Bello pleaded not guilty to the 19-count charge of alleged ₦80 billion fraud filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges relate to alleged money laundering during his tenure as governor.

During the hearing, EFCC counsel Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, informed the court of the withdrawal of an earlier application to expedite the arraignment date, stating it had been rendered moot by recent developments. Defense counsel Joseph Daudu, SAN, did not oppose the withdrawal, and Justice Nwite granted the request, striking out the application.
