Abuja Lawyer: Nnamdi Kanu’s Re-Arraignment Heralds a New Era for Nigeria’s Judiciary

An Abuja-based lawyer, Christopher Chidera, hailed the recent re-arraignment of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu as a fresh start for Nigeria’s judiciary. Speaking after the proceedings, Chidera noted that the case conducted before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court unfolded without tension or bias, signaling an end to the longstanding conflict between Kanu and the government over terrorism charges.

Chidera praised the calm, respectful approach taken in court and highlighted the roles of Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, and Adegboyega Awomolo in fostering a spirit of reconciliation. Agabi’s public apology on behalf of Kanu, along with Kanu’s own call for forgiveness and peaceful dialogue, underscored the commitment to move beyond past hostilities.

Justice Omotosho reiterated the judiciary’s vital role, emphasizing that the court is a sanctuary of justice where fairness prevails. This mutual gesture of apology and respect marks a pivotal moment of renewal in Nigeria’s pursuit of justice, reinforcing the resilience and integrity of the legal system

Lagos is the only state with more court cases per judge than Anambra.

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, recently declared that the state’s judiciary is among the most hardworking in the nation. He made this remark during an event celebrating the 88th birthday of former Chief Judge Retired Justice Godwin Ononiba and the launch of his book, Wisdom On The Bench: The Enduring Legacies of Godwin Ude Ononiba.

In his speech, Soludo said, “Today we celebrate Justice Ononiba and the legacy he leaves behind. He was a tireless worker, and I believe our judges here in Anambra are the most dedicated in the country. Our judiciary handles the highest number of cases per judge nationwide—only Lagos surpasses us. We call on our judges to continue upholding justice and to set the standard for others.”

Earlier at the event, Professor Ilochi Okafor, a former Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, shared his admiration for the emerging generation of young judges in Anambra. He described them as enterprising and committed to delivering effective judgments. Okafor noted, “Justice Ononiba exemplified everything the justice system should be. He was a supportive figure for junior lawyers, always humble despite his stature. Today, we see a fresh wave of dynamic judges who are tackling case backlogs and setting benchmarks through their decisions. They have the passion for justice; all they need now is continued mentorship from leaders like Justice Ononiba.”

The ceremony was chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge Anthony Iguh and was attended by numerous esteemed jurists and legal practitioners from across the country.

Naira Marley Testifies at Coroner’s Inquest Into Mohbad’s Death

Nigerian singer Naira Marley has testified before a Magistrate Court in Ikorodu as part of the Coroner’s inquest investigating the cause of death of Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

Appearing virtually on Friday, Naira Marley shared his account of events while distancing himself from allegations linking him to his former signee’s death.

During his testimony before Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi, Marley revealed that he had signed Mohbad to his record label, Marlian Records, under a contract to produce four albums. However, he stated that disagreements between Mohbad and his manager, Opere Babatunde, prevented the completion of those albums before the singer’s departure from the label.

Denying any involvement in threatening or harming Mohbad, Marley cited a police report that, according to him, cleared him of such accusations. He dismissed claims of harassment as mere speculation.

When questioned about a viral video in which Mohbad stated that Naira Marley and the Marlian crew should be held responsible if anything happened to him, Marley claimed that both Mohbad and his parents later apologized for the video, attributing it to the late singer’s state of mind under the influence of drugs.

The singer also insisted there was no ongoing dispute between him and Mohbad, emphasizing that the last time he saw the late artist was a year before his passing. He added that he was not even in the country when Mohbad died.

However, Mohbad’s lawyer, Oluwasanmi Falade, countered Marley’s claim, testifying that there was indeed a dispute between Mohbad and Marlian Records over unpaid royalties. He stated that, at Mohbad’s request, he had repeatedly written to the label regarding the matter but never received a response. He also confirmed that the dispute was now the subject of litigation at the Federal High Court.

Falade further revealed that Mohbad had reported an alleged assault by music promoter Sam Larry at Lekki Beach to the police. Despite police efforts, attempts to arrest Sam Larry had been unsuccessful.

Following the testimonies, Magistrate Shotobi summoned Sam Larry to appear before the Coroner’s Court at the next hearing on April 11. The Coroner also instructed parties to verify the address of Mohbad’s driver so that a witness summons could be issued for his testimony.

Additionally, the court directed the pathologist who conducted an independent autopsy on Mohbad to submit a copy of his findings to both the Coroner’s Court and the Chief Coroner before the next hearing.

The inquest continues as authorities seek to uncover the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.

Rivers Crisis: Fubara’s Suspension and Lawmakers’ Actions Tarnish Nigeria’s Image — Jonathan

Former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has expressed concern that the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected officials in Rivers State damages Nigeria’s reputation.

Speaking as the Chairman at the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium in Abuja on Saturday, Jonathan voiced disappointment over the removal of elected leaders. He emphasized that such actions by key figures in the executive and legislative branches negatively impact the country’s image.

On the same day, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) backed President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers. The party argued that a responsible government must act decisively to prevent a worsening crisis. NNPP National Chairman, Dr. Agbo Major, stated that Tinubu, as Nigeria’s Chief Security Officer, had access to intelligence not available to the public. He added that without intervention, the escalating situation in Rivers could have led to unpredictable consequences. Major also criticized some leaders for failing to de-escalate tensions and instead allowing the crisis to deepen before speaking out.

Jonathan, however, stressed that such political instability discourages investment and erodes trust in Nigeria’s governance. While he acknowledged that former presidents typically avoid commenting on ongoing issues to prevent political tensions, he felt compelled to speak due to widespread calls from Nigerians urging him to address the situation.

Additionally, he criticized the undue influence of individuals over the judiciary, warning that such interference undermines confidence in the legal system.
