Supreme Court Didn’t Decide Rivers State Speaker’s Status – Falana

Contrary to some narratives, the Supreme Court verdict on the appeal by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara against the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly does not determine the authentic Speaker of the House.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, clarified this in an interview on Monday, following the Supreme Court’s dismissal of the governor’s appeal.

“When an appeal is dismissed not on merit but because the appellant withdraws it, there is no basis for celebration. In this case, the governor of Rivers State instructed his lawyers to withdraw the appeal, as it had become an academic exercise,” Falana explained.

He emphasized that the court did not rule on the Speaker’s legitimacy. Instead, the appeal stemmed from a Federal High Court decision related to the 2024 budget proposal, which the governor stated had already been passed into law, rendering further litigation unnecessary.

A five-man panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, dismissed the appeal against the Amaewhule-led group based on its withdrawal by Fubara’s counsel, Yusuf Ali.

The Rivers Assembly has been in crisis since 2023, following the defection of over 25 lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The leadership of the House, under Amaewhule, was subsequently contested by lawmakers led by Victor Oko-Jumbo, who is aligned with Fubara.

Since then, Fubara has conducted state business with the Oko-Jumbo group while ignoring the Amaewhule faction.

Falana reiterated that three members of the state House of Assembly can carry out legislative functions, except in matters concerning the governor’s impeachment. He asserted that by defecting from the PDP to the APC, the 27 lawmakers lost their seats when they were declared vacant.

IGP Bans Officers In Mufti From Carrying Rifles

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to police officers nationwide, cautioning them against human rights violations and other forms of misconduct.

During a virtual meeting with police managers on Monday, the IGP emphasized that officers must adhere to professional conduct and operational guidelines. According to a statement by Force Spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP specifically prohibited officers from carrying assault rifles while dressed in civilian attire (mufti).

Acknowledging numerous complaints received through the Force’s complaint channels, the IGP reiterated his commitment to upholding human rights and warned that any violations would attract severe consequences.

“The IGP also warned all tactical squads against the misuse of power and improper dressing, emphasizing the importance of operating in approved uniforms,” the statement read.

He directed all tactical squads to strictly comply with the standard operating procedures and ensure they wear the designated uniforms for their respective squads.

Additionally, the IGP condemned the indiscriminate transfer of cases without written approval, stressing that such actions burden victims and delay justice.

“This conduct is highly prohibited and will no longer be tolerated,” he stated.

The IGP’s directives underscore the police leadership’s determination to enhance professionalism, accountability, and public trust in law enforcement. Officers are expected to align with these regulations to ensure effective and ethical policing in the country.

Uber Driver Murdered, Body Abandoned on Lagos Road

The Lagos State chapter of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) has expressed deep sorrow over the murder of 42-year-old e-hailing driver Yusfat Ayinde, who was fatally stabbed by unidentified attackers on Friday.

Confirming the tragic incident on Monday, AUATON chairman Jaiyesinmi Azeez stated that Ayinde was on duty in the evening when he was ambushed.

According to Azeez, Ayinde had accepted a ride request through an e-hailing app and arrived at the pickup location, where a group of hoodlums attacked him. The assailants fatally stabbed him before fleeing with his vehicle.

“Comrade Yusfat Olawale Ayinde was not just a member of our union but also an administrator for a group of professional chauffeurs in the state. His murder was a brutal and senseless attack. Investigations suggest that he was lured into a trap after accepting a ride request, only to be ambushed and killed,” Azeez stated.

Ayinde’s body was later found along Agidingbi Road in Ikeja before being taken to the morgue.

Raising concerns over driver safety, Azeez called for enhanced security measures to protect e-hailing operators. He revealed that the union’s task force had launched an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding Ayinde’s murder.

“The task force is working closely with the family and relevant authorities to gather evidence, including tracking the app used to book the ride. Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the culprits,” he added.

Discussions are also underway to introduce additional safety protocols for e-hailing drivers, such as emergency response systems and increased surveillance in high-risk areas.

AUATON has pledged full support for Ayinde’s family, ensuring they receive necessary assistance while pushing for justice. “We are committed to making sure such tragic incidents are prevented in the future,” Azeez concluded.

In a related development, the Lagos State Police Command recently arrested a 21-year-old US returnee, David Segun, and three accomplices for allegedly killing an Uber driver in Obalende.

According to Commissioner of Police Ishola Olanrewaju, the suspects, including Emeka Akwara (19), Samuel Ariori (21), and Lukman Ariori (19), ordered a ride from Chevron in Lekki to Obalende on January 9. Upon reaching a secluded area, they allegedly robbed and stabbed the driver multiple times in the neck before fleeing.

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Monday, officially swore in Umar Ibrahim as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG). Ibrahim replaces Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, who was relieved of his duties due to health reasons.

The swearing-in ceremony, held at the governor’s office, was a low-key event led by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Haruna Isa Dederi. Until Ibrahim’s appointment, Kano had been without a substantive SSG.

Welcoming the new SSG, the Permanent Secretary of the Research, Evaluation, and Political Affairs Directorate, Umar Jalo, praised Ibrahim’s selection, describing it as a well-deserved appointment. A statement from the Cabinet Office’s Information Officer, Musa Muhammad, expressed confidence that Ibrahim’s leadership would drive positive transformation in the state and ensure the effective delivery of democratic dividends.

In a show of support, the Payroll Standing Committee, led by Deputy Chairman Abdulmalik Rogo, paid a solidarity visit to the new SSG. Rogo emphasized their commitment to backing Ibrahim in his new role and prayed for his success.

Responding to the visit, Ibrahim reaffirmed his dedication to Governor Yusuf and the people of Kano, promising to operate an open-door policy to welcome meaningful contributions for the state's progress.
