EPL: Paul Merson Expresses Worry and Disappointment Over Chelsea

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has expressed concern over Chelsea’s prospects for the 2024-25 Premier League season, particularly after their disappointing FA Cup exit.

Merson criticized Chelsea’s performance in their 2-1 loss to Brighton last weekend, where they surrendered a lead and crashed out in the fourth round. He believes their inconsistency is worrying, especially as they prepare for their next league fixture at Stamford Bridge.

One of Merson’s biggest concerns is the absence of striker Nicolas Jackson due to injury. He feels Jackson’s absence could impact Chelsea’s attacking fluidity, particularly affecting playmaker Cole Palmer, who thrives alongside the forward.

“I was disappointed with Chelsea last weekend. They were 1-0 up against Brighton in the FA Cup and should have won that game. Instead, we saw them crumble and get knocked out in the fourth round!” Merson told Metro in his match preview.

He further noted that despite criticism from some fans, Jackson’s injury will expose his importance to the team.

“Nicolas Jackson is out injured, and he will be a massive miss for them. Even though some fans have been demanding the club sign a new striker, they will now realize how much he will be missed. His movement off the ball actually helps Cole Palmer become a better, more impactful player,” Merson added.

Merson also questioned Chelsea’s tactical adjustments, particularly the use of Christopher Nkunku as a central striker, arguing that the Frenchman is better suited to a No. 10 role.

“I worry for Chelsea in the race for the top four now that Jackson is injured. I’ve always said that Christopher Nkunku is more of a No. 10, and playing him at centre-forward isn’t the ideal solution.”

Brighton, he noted, will enter the match with less pressure and could once again cause an upset.

“I’d be shocked if Chelsea wins this game. I’m actually going for a repeat of what happened in the FA Cup,” he concluded.

Chelsea currently sits fourth in the Premier League with 43 points, but any slip-up could see them overtaken by Manchester City, who face Newcastle United this weekend.
