FCT High Court Grants Ex-Gov Yahaya Bello N500m Bail

Justice Maryanne Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court has granted bail to former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello in the sum of ₦500 million, with three sureties of equal value. This decision follows her earlier rejection of Bello’s bail application on December 10, which she ruled was premature as it was filed before he was in custody or appeared in court.

Bello is currently on trial for alleged money laundering involving ₦110 billion, alongside two co-defendants. He pleaded not guilty to the 16 charges leveled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

During the latest court session, Bello’s lead counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, withdrew a further affidavit in response to a counter affidavit from the prosecution, aiming to avoid unnecessary contention. The prosecution, represented by Olukayode Enitan, SAN, did not oppose the withdrawal, leading the court to strike out the document.

Daudu informed the court that discussions between the defense and prosecution teams had yielded an agreement to expedite the trial. He urged the court to grant Bello’s bail request and appealed for a review of the bail conditions to allow sureties to present properties located anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), rather than being restricted to Maitama.

Enitan confirmed the prosecution’s cooperation, emphasizing that the decision to grant bail ultimately rested on the court’s discretion. He assured the court that the prosecution would not oppose the process in a way that could delay justice.

In her ruling, Justice Anenih noted that the charges against Bello were bailable and set his bail at ₦500 million. The conditions include three sureties who must be prominent Nigerians owning landed property in areas such as Maitama, Jabi, Utako, Apo, Guzape, Garki, or Asokoro. Bello is also required to surrender his international passport and other travel documents to the court. Until he meets the bail conditions, he will remain in custody at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

US Friedkin Group Seals Full Takeover of Everton

The US-based Friedkin Group has officially completed its takeover of Everton, the Premier League club announced on Thursday. The acquisition was made through Roundhouse Capital Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of the Friedkin Group, marking Everton as the 10th Premier League club under majority American ownership.

The Premier League confirmed that the Friedkin Group now holds a 98.8% stake in the club. This follows Everton’s September announcement of the agreement to purchase Farhad Moshiri’s majority stake, pending regulatory approval, which has now been granted by the Premier League, the Women’s Professional Leagues Limited, the Football Association, and the Financial Conduct Authority.

The deal, valued at over £400 million ($506 million) according to the BBC, is led by Dan Friedkin, chairman of the Texas-based group, which also owns Italian Serie A team AS Roma. Friedkin’s net worth is estimated at £6.16 billion, as per Forbes.

Everton, currently 16th in the Premier League and three points above the relegation zone, has faced significant financial challenges. The club was penalized twice under the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules in the last 13 months, resulting in a total deduction of eight points last season. Between 2019 and 2023, Everton reported losses nearing £400 million ($534 million).

Despite interest from other American firms, including 777 Partners and Crystal Palace shareholder John Textor, the Friedkin Group finalized the deal, securing the future of one of England’s most historic clubs.

The takeover comes at a pivotal moment for Everton, as they near completion of their new stadium, set to replace Goodison Park, the club’s home since 1892.

Everton, which has remained in the English top flight for 70 years, boasts a storied history with nine league titles, trailing only Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City. However, their last league title came in the 1986/87 season, and they have not secured a major trophy since winning the FA Cup in 1995.

The Friedkin Group’s acquisition signals a new chapter for the Toffees as they aim to stabilize their finances, improve performances, and build on their rich legacy.

Tottenham Coach Postecoglou: “Football Tougher Than Being Prime Minister”

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has compared the challenges of being a Premier League coach to those of a Prime Minister, arguing that football managers face greater scrutiny with "an election every weekend."

Speaking on Wednesday, Postecoglou explained the relentless nature of the job: “How many times does a Prime Minister have an election? I have one every weekend, mate. We have an election every weekend and either get voted in or out.”

Tottenham, who last won a trophy in 2008, currently sit 10th in the Premier League. Last weekend's decisive 5-0 victory over Southampton highlighted the precarious nature of football management, as it led to the sacking of Saints boss Russell Martin, just hours after Wolves dismissed Gary O’Neil.

On Thursday, Postecoglou’s side faces Manchester United in the English League Cup quarter-finals, a crucial match that he acknowledges could bring more scrutiny if the result doesn’t go their way.

Reflecting on the growing pressures of modern football, Postecoglou expressed concern about how managers are treated: “We’ve lost all sense of respect in society where people are still in jobs, and their replacements are already being speculated about. It’s become too easy to throw people in the trash and move on without any thought or care.”

He continued, “People say managers have always been sacked, but now it feels different. We forget there’s a human being involved. This is the hardest job in any walk of life. Politics may be tough, but this is harder. Few managers come out of this job without scars.”

As Postecoglou prepares for Tottenham's next challenge, his comments highlight the intense pressure and scrutiny that define the world of football management today.
