February 16, 2025 SERAP Issues 48-Hour Ultimatum to CBN Over ATM Fee Hike

SERAP Issues 48-Hour Ultimatum to CBN Over ATM Fee Hike

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, to immediately revoke the recent increase in Automated Teller Machine (ATM) transaction fees, describing it as unlawful, unfair, and unjust.

SERAP urged the CBN to ensure its policies do not worsen the economic hardship faced by Nigerians or contribute to human rights violations. The CBN had recently announced that ATM withdrawals from off-site bank-owned machines would now attract a ₦100 charge per ₦20,000 withdrawn, while withdrawals from standalone cash points, shopping centers, and airports would incur an additional surcharge of up to ₦500. The new charges are set to take effect from March 1, 2025.

In an open letter dated February 15, 2025, and signed by SERAP Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization criticized the increase, warning that it would disproportionately affect low-income Nigerians and further deepen poverty. According to SERAP, banks and their shareholders, who continue to report massive profits, should bear such costs instead of passing them onto struggling citizens.

The letter also emphasized that the fee hike contradicts President Bola Tinubu’s stated commitment to tackling poverty. SERAP warned that if the CBN fails to reverse the decision within 48 hours, it would pursue legal action to compel compliance in the public interest.

SERAP further argued that the increase violates the Nigerian Constitution, the CBN Act, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, and international human rights standards. It accused the CBN of abusing its dominant position by imposing excessive charges that unfairly burden consumers.

The organization also pointed out that the CBN has a responsibility under the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) to ensure its policies do not contribute to economic harm. It called on the apex bank to undertake proper human rights due diligence and eliminate transaction fees that have severe negative consequences on Nigerians.

EPL: Nottingham Forest Coach Optimistic About Awoniyi’s Injury Recovery

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo remains hopeful that Taiwo Awoniyi will be fit in time for the club’s next Premier League clash against Newcastle United.

Awoniyi was absent from Forest’s 2-1 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday due to injury. The Nigerian striker suffered a broken nose during the team’s Emirates FA Cup victory over Exeter City earlier in the week.

Santo explained that the club was unable to include Awoniyi in the squad against Fulham as they had not received clearance under the Premier League’s concussion protocols.

“We didn’t have the clearance from the Premier League about the concussion protocols, so he was not able to go in the squad,” Santo told Nottingham Post.

Despite the setback, the manager reassured fans that Awoniyi is in good condition and that his absence was purely precautionary.

“He is feeling fine, it is about making sure we follow the protocols. He was okay, but we have to respect the protocols.”

Forest will be hoping to have the striker back in action as they prepare for a crucial encounter against Newcastle United.

Rising Kidnappings Spark Fear Among Akure Residents

Residents of Oba-Ile and surrounding areas in Akure North Local Government Area are living in fear following a surge in kidnappings that have unsettled the community.

Last week, unknown gunmen killed a health worker, Akinola Oyabiyi, and abducted his child near Akure Airport in Eleyowo. The previous week, two former students of the Federal College of Agriculture, Akure, were kidnapped at Oke Oge while returning from their farm, with their captors demanding a ₦15 million ransom.

Reports indicate that some residents have been forced to pay ransoms after receiving direct threats of abduction. Just last month, five farmers were brutally murdered at Ajegunle Powerline in Akure North, further heightening tensions in the area.

Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, acknowledged the rising security concerns and stressed the urgent need for advanced equipment and vehicles to effectively tackle the challenge. He noted that kidnappers have become more sophisticated and emphasized the necessity of tracking devices and drones to curb the menace.

In response to the escalating situation, he has directed all Divisional Police Officers to intensify patrols across the state. He also stated that divisions without patrol vehicles would resort to using motorcycles to ensure continued surveillance and response efforts.

Meanwhile, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Security, Chief Gbenga Atiba, assured residents that the state government is taking significant measures to ensure the safety of lives and property.

As kidnappings continue to rise, residents remain on edge, calling on authorities to implement swift and effective security interventions.

NNPCL Dismisses Claims About Fuel Efficiency as Misleading

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has debunked claims made in a viral video alleging that its premium motor spirit (PMS) does not last as long as fuel from Dangote Refinery.

In a statement released on Saturday, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, described the claim as misleading, false, and entirely unfounded.

The viral video featured a content creator who claimed to have purchased a liter of Dangote petrol from an MRS filling station in Alapere, Lagos, at ₦925 and the same quantity from an NNPCL station in Ojodu Berger at ₦945. The video further alleged that when used in separate generators, the one running on NNPCL fuel stopped after 17 minutes, while the Dangote petrol-powered generator lasted 33 minutes.

NNPCL dismissed this claim, stating that it was based on unverified, amateur research that lacks credibility, accuracy, and professional oversight. The company further clarified that a significant percentage of the fuel sold at the NNPCL station in question was sourced from the Dangote Refinery.

NNPCL firmly refuted the allegations, stating:

“The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd strongly refutes the false and misleading allegations made in a viral video circulating online, which claims that NNPC fuel does not last. This assertion is baseless and entirely unfounded, originating from unverified and amateur research that lacks credibility, accuracy, and professional oversight.

“NNPC Ltd reaffirms that its fuel is carefully formulated with high-quality composition to ensure optimal efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability. Additionally, a significant percentage of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) sold at NNPC retail stations in Lagos—where this misleading video was recorded—is sourced from the Dangote Refinery, a strategic partner in promoting local production and energy security.

“Dangote Refinery adheres to strict industry standards, ensuring the quality of petroleum products supplied to consumers. This misleading video is yet another desperate attempt by economic saboteurs to misinform the public and tarnish NNPC Ltd’s reputation.

“We will not tolerate deliberate misinformation designed to undermine our operations and mislead Nigerians. Moving forward, NNPC Ltd will take firm legal action against individuals or groups who intentionally spread falsehoods about our brand and operations. Those engaged in such malicious activities will be held fully accountable under the law.

“We urge the public to disregard such fabricated content and rely on verified sources for accurate information. NNPC Ltd remains steadfast in its mission to ensure fuel availability, affordability, and quality for all Nigerians while maintaining global industry standards.”

NNPCL reassured the public of its commitment to providing high-quality fuel and warned against attempts to spread misinformation. The company urged Nigerians to rely on credible sources for accurate information regarding fuel quality and supply.
