Federal High Court Grants Diezani’s Appeal Against Forfeiture Order

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke’s application to amend her lawsuit challenging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) order for the final forfeiture of her seized assets.

Justice Inyang Ekwo approved the request on Monday after Alison-Madueke’s lawyer, Godwin Inyinbor, moved the motion, with EFCC’s counsel, Divine Oguru, raising no objections.

During the court session, Inyinbor informed the judge that the motion to amend the originating process had already been filed and duly served to the EFCC. Since Oguru did not oppose the request, Justice Ekwo granted it as prayed.

The court gave Alison-Madueke five days to file and serve the amended processes, while the EFCC was given 14 days from the date of service to respond. The case was subsequently adjourned to March 17 for further proceedings.

Previously, on November 21, 2024, the court had scheduled February 17, 2025, for the hearing of the amendment motion.

Alison-Madueke, through her lead counsel, Mike Ozekhome, had filed the suit (marked FHC/ABJ/CS/21/2023) against the EFCC as the sole respondent. She is seeking an extension of time to request the court to set aside the EFCC’s public notice announcing the sale of her confiscated properties.

Tight Security as Lagos Assembly Convenes Amid Leadership Dispute

The leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly took a dramatic turn on Monday as a heavy security presence was observed at the Assembly complex during a plenary session. Security personnel and patrol vans were stationed within and outside the premises in Alausa, heightening tensions surrounding the ongoing dispute.

An official confirmed that Speaker Meranda Mojisola and 32 members of the legislative body were in attendance for the session. While the agenda of the plenary remained unclear, some lawmakers were seen discussing in small groups within the complex.

Despite claims from sources that the leadership structure of the House remains intact, speculation continues to grow over a potential change in the speakership. Reports suggest that internal power struggles could lead to further shifts in leadership.

The crisis stems from last month’s unprecedented impeachment of long-serving Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of fraud and other misconduct. Following his removal, the House made history by electing Mojisola Meranda, the representative of Apapa Constituency I, as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Defending the decision, Abiodun Tobun, the lawmaker representing Epe Constituency I, asserted that the House acted within its constitutional rights. “The Constitution makes it clear that the House has the power to regulate its proceedings. Members felt they had enough of Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, and today, we unanimously agreed that Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda Lasbat becomes the new Speaker,” Tobun stated.

He further emphasized the lawmakers' commitment to restoring the integrity and sanctity of the Assembly, signaling that the leadership battle is far from over.

Angry Youths Set Fire to Ondo Police Station

Angry youths in Ifon, the headquarters of Ose Local Government Area in Ondo State, have attacked the divisional police station, forcing officers to flee and setting the station on fire.

The violence erupted after a clash between two youth groups in the community on Valentine’s Day. One group reported the incident to the police, leading to the arrest of two individuals from the opposing group. Unfortunately, one of the detainees allegedly died from police torture, while the other is being treated in a hospital. This incident sparked outrage among some of the local youths, who then protested at the police station, chased away the officers, and set the station ablaze.

The protest continued into Sunday morning, prompting Ondo State Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi to visit the town for an on-the-ground assessment of the situation.

According to a statement from police spokesperson Funmilayo Odunlami, preliminary reports indicated that the conflict began on February 15, 2025, when a dispute between two families on Ogbomo Street escalated into a public fight. Police officers from the Ifon Division, led by an inspector, responded quickly, intervened, and made arrests while some suspects fled.

Later, one of the young men involved in the fight, Tobi Bobade, was brought to the station by a man named Mr. Losilosi. Bobade appeared weak and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead shortly after. His body has been sent to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo for a postmortem examination.

In response, an angry mob led by Bobade’s father launched a violent attack on the police station, damaging the administrative office, the DPO’s office, the station store, and two exhibit vehicles. The fire set by the mob caused significant destruction, though fortunately, no lives were lost, as security personnel quickly called for reinforcements to secure the area.

The police commissioner condemned the attack, stating that such acts of lawlessness would not be tolerated, and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The police also appealed for calm, urging the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. “Investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” the statement concluded.
