Husband Claims Passport-Tearing Incident at Airport Was Just a Skit

The man featured in a viral video, where his wife appeared to tear up his passport upon their return to Nigeria, has clarified that the incident was staged as part of a skit.

In a recent video posted on the family’s Instagram page, the man, accompanied by his children, apologized to Nigerians and sought understanding. He clarified that the object his wife tore was not an actual passport, emphasizing that as a Nigerian citizen, he is committed to abiding by the country’s laws.

He stated, “What my wife tore was not a passport. She did not damage my passport; we were merely creating a skit based on a story we wanted to share. I didn’t anticipate it would go viral. Please, understand that my passport is intact, and we did not intend to disrespect the law.”

On Monday, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) announced it had launched an investigation after the video surfaced on social media, showing the man’s wife destroying what appeared to be a Nigerian passport at Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

NIS Public Relations Officer, DCI Kenneth Udo, confirmed that the individuals involved have been identified and summoned for further questioning. He warned that if the allegations are proven true, it could be considered a violation of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015, with penalties as outlined in Section 10(h) of the same Act. Udo affirmed the NIS's commitment to enforcing the Immigration Act to ensure national security and uphold the integrity of the nation’s legal documents.

Government Announces Two-Day Traffic Diversion on Lagos Road

The Lagos State Government has announced a planned traffic diversion at the Ikeja Along Bus Stop on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, between Ile Zik and Conoil Filling Station on the Oshodi-bound lane. The diversion will occur over two days, from Saturday, August 17, 2024, to Sunday, August 18, 2024, between 12 midnight and 4 am each day.

The diversion is necessary to allow workers to safely demolish the old pedestrian bridge in the area. The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation shared this information on Thursday via their X handle.

According to the announcement, only one lane will be available to motorists from Ile Zik Bus Stop to Conoil Filling Station on the Oshodi-bound side of the road during the demolition. However, the traffic diversion will not affect motorists on the Dopemu/Abule Egba-bound side of the road.

The state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, assured that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be on the ground to manage vehicular movement and minimize any inconvenience. He urged motorists to be patient, explaining that the closure is part of the traffic management plan by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority to ensure the safe removal of the old pedestrian bridge. The affected lanes will be cordoned off with jersey barriers and protective nets to ensure the safety of motorists and commuters during the demolition.
