Swiss Goalkeeper Sommer Announces Retirement from International Football

Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer announced his retirement from international football on Monday, concluding a 12-year career in which he earned 94 caps for the national team.

The 35-year-old featured in all five of Switzerland’s matches at Euro 2024, with his final international appearance coming in a quarter-final loss to England on penalties.

“Playing for the national team has meant a great deal to me,” said Sommer, who currently plays for Inter Milan, in a statement released by the Swiss football association. “I look back with pride on the countless unforgettable moments, the thrilling matches, the victories we celebrated together, and the challenges we overcame as a team.”

Sommer has been a pivotal player for Switzerland since taking over as the first-choice goalkeeper from Diego Benaglio a decade ago. Under his stewardship, Switzerland has reached the knockout stages in the last six major tournaments.

One of Sommer’s most memorable moments came at Euro 2020 when he made a decisive penalty save against France’s Kylian Mbappe in the last 16, propelling Switzerland to their first major tournament quarter-final since 1954.

Obasanjo Urges Nationwide Agricultural Revolution for Food Security

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged state governments to prioritize agricultural development, warning that Nigeria's inability to feed itself poses a significant risk to the nation. He made these remarks during a weekend visit to Abeokuta by a delegation of Commissioners and Special Advisers from Niger State.

Obasanjo highlighted that with the availability of modern agricultural equipment, the impact of current agricultural initiatives could surpass those of past efforts. During the visit, the delegation toured a state-of-the-art soilless farm where youths from Niger State are being trained in innovative agricultural techniques for future implementation back home.

The former president praised Niger State Governor Umaru Bago for his efforts to transform the state's agricultural sector, comparing Bago's initiatives to his own "Operation Feed the Nation" policy of 1976. Obasanjo emphasized that achieving agricultural self-sufficiency could elevate Nigeria's current status and significantly improve the socio-economic well-being of its people. He called on other state governors to follow Niger State's example to ensure that Nigeria can produce the majority of its own food.

Obasanjo encouraged Niger State to continue investing in agriculture and to explore modern methods to enhance existing practices. He expressed his intention to visit Niger State with his team to learn from their progress and exchange ideas to further advance his agricultural initiatives.

Additionally, Obasanjo advised Nigerians to consider investing in soilless farming, emphasizing that innovative farming techniques are crucial for sustaining the nation's agricultural productivity.

Fuel Scarcity Sparks Gridlock and Long Queues in Lagos

Fuel queues have reappeared in various parts of Lagos due to a shortage of petroleum products in Nigeria’s commercial hub. In some areas, motorists were seen lining up in queues that extended into the streets, leading to traffic congestion around filling stations.

The price of a litre of fuel has surged to between N800 and N1,000 at some stations, causing transportation costs to rise. Many filling stations have stopped selling fuel altogether, while black market dealers have seized the opportunity to conduct brisk business.

This fuel scarcity isn't confined to Lagos; several states in northern Nigeria are also facing persistent shortages. In response, the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), has threatened to revoke the licenses of filling stations hoarding fuel.

In a tweet, the agency stated, “NMDPRA embarks on a war against the illegal sale of petroleum products, especially PMS in jerrycans. Filling stations are advised to desist from servicing illegal peddlers; failure to do so would result in the suspension of retail licenses.”

Last month, the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) attributed the scarcity to disruptions in the discharge operations of several vessels. NNPCL spokesperson Olufemi Soneye explained that the tight fuel supply and distribution in parts of Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were due to these operational issues. He also mentioned that the situation was exacerbated by flooding along truck routes, which hindered the movement of PMS from coastal areas to Abuja. Despite these challenges, he assured Nigerians that the NNPCL is actively working to resolve the situation.
