TUC Warns Petrol Price Hike Will Deepen Workers’ Poverty

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has strongly opposed the recent increase in petrol prices, warning that it will worsen poverty among workers. In a statement released on Wednesday, TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo called on the Federal Government to "immediately reverse these decisions, implement policies to strengthen the naira, and take urgent action to ease the suffering of Nigerians."

The union criticized the price hike, stating that it was "implemented without consultation with key stakeholders," showing a lack of regard for the well-being of the Nigerian people, particularly the working class, who will feel the greatest impact of the decision.

"The sudden increase in fuel and electricity costs will only deepen the existing challenges, leading to greater hardship and potential social unrest," Osifo said.

He urged the government to act quickly to reverse the price hikes, implement policies to stabilize the naira, and take decisive steps to improve the living conditions of its citizens.

"The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria is dedicated to defending the rights and interests of Nigerian workers and will continue to push for policies that promote social justice, fair wages, and a decent working environment," Osifo added.

Super Eagles’ Ademola Lookman Nominated For 2024 Ballon d’Or

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has been nominated for the 2024 Men’s Ballon d’Or award. The 26-year-old Atalanta star was included in the 30-man shortlist announced by France Football Magazine on Wednesday.

Lookman stands out as the only African player on this year’s list. Notably, eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi and five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo are absent from the nominations for the first time in years.

Lookman enjoyed a standout season, playing a pivotal role in Atalanta's historic triumph in Europe, helping the club secure its first-ever European trophy. He was especially remarkable in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, where he scored a hattrick. In total, he recorded 17 goals and 11 assists for Atalanta last season.

On the international stage, Lookman was crucial in the Super Eagles' journey to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d'Ivoire earlier this year. He netted two goals as Nigeria finished runners-up, losing 2-1 to the hosts in the final.

This year's Ballon d’Or nominations are dominated by Spanish players from the national team, following their Euro 2024 victory, and Real Madrid's UEFA Champions League triumph. Among the notable nominees are Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior, Erling Haaland, and Kylian Mbappé.

NANS Denies Claims of Planned Protest Against Petrol Price Increase

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has refuted claims of organizing a protest against the recent petrol price hike. This denial follows a circulated statement, allegedly from NANS, announcing plans to shut down major cities across Nigeria starting September 15, 2024, in protest against the fuel price increase.

The statement also demanded the reversal of the petrol price hike and the removal of Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPCL). However, NANS Senate President, Afeez Akinteye, dismissed the statement as false and urged security agencies to investigate its source.

“We strongly urge the public, the media, and all stakeholders to disregard these false reports. The individuals or groups behind these rumors are faceless entities seeking to exploit the name of NANS for their malicious purposes,” Akinteye said.

He further stressed that the intention behind these rumors was to destabilize the country and create unnecessary tension. Akinteye clarified that NANS is not involved in any such plans and called for a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable.

“The use of the NANS name to propagate such dangerous and unfounded claims is a threat to national security and a disservice to millions of students genuinely seeking positive change through legitimate means,” he added.

Akinteye also urged security agencies to take action against individuals or groups attempting to use NANS’ name to incite unrest or disrupt national peace. He emphasized that NANS remains committed to advocating for the rights and welfare of Nigerian students through peaceful and lawful means, standing for peace, progress, and national unity.

John Terry Responds to Chelsea Star’s Move to Liverpool

Chelsea legend John Terry has extended his best wishes to young winger Rio Ngumoha after the player made the move from Chelsea to Premier League rivals Liverpool. Ngumoha, who began making waves in Chelsea’s Under-21 squad at just 15 years old, has now signed a scholar’s contract with Liverpool.

The England youth international will start his journey with Liverpool's Under-18 team. According to The Athletic, while the Premier League has approved the transfer, a tribunal may still be necessary to determine the compensation fee between the two clubs.

Ngumoha, now 16, could make his debut for Liverpool in their upcoming match against Blackburn Rovers next Saturday. He announced the transfer on Instagram with the caption, “Delighted to sign for Liverpool YNWA.”

John Terry, currently a coach in Chelsea’s academy, responded to the post, simply saying: "Good luck, mate."
