Eguavoen Responds to Reports of Resignation as Super Eagles Coach

Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has dismissed rumors suggesting that he resigned following the team's 0-0 draw against the Amavubi of Rwanda in Kigali.

The speculation began after Eguavoen's post-match comments following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Amahoro Stadium. However, speaking to journalists upon the team’s arrival in Abuja, Eguavoen clarified that the reports were false and misinterpreted.

He emphasized that he remains in charge of the Super Eagles and plans to meet with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to evaluate the team's performance after the two recent matches.

“It’s unfortunate that such inaccurate stories are being spread, especially given our current situation where we don’t need negativity. I merely mentioned that we would sit down with the federation after these games to assess the way forward,” Eguavoen explained.

He expressed concern over the misleading reports, affirming, "I am still very much in charge. As the Technical Director of the NFF, I am responsible for leading the Super Eagles at this time, and that hasn’t changed."

The Super Eagles’ next match is against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya, scheduled for mid-October at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

AFCONQ 2025: “He Was Tormenting Them” – Eguavoen on Substituting Chukwueze Against Rwanda

Interim Super Eagles coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has explained why he substituted Samuel Chukwueze during the second half of Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Rwanda on Tuesday. Chukwueze, who was performing well, was replaced by Moses Simon at halftime.

In his post-match interview, Eguavoen revealed that the decision to take off the AC Milan winger was due to his yellow card and the threat he posed to the hosts.

“Chukwueze is a very good player, one of our best. Today, we had a strategy in place, and he was tormenting Rwanda,” Eguavoen said. “However, he got a yellow card, and we had three players on yellow cards, which is always a risk. We had to make substitutions, and we have other players who can push forward as well."

Eguavoen added, “We thought it was best to rest Chukwueze, not because he wasn’t playing well, but to avoid the risk of him getting a second yellow card.”

Court Grants 10 #Endbadgovernance Protesters Bail

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday granted bail to 10 #EndBadGovernance protesters who had been arrested and charged with treason, among other offenses. Each defendant was granted bail in the sum of N10 million, with one surety in the same amount.

While delivering the ruling, Justice Nwite emphasized that Nigeria’s criminal justice system operates under specific guidelines for both the prosecution and defense. He agreed with the argument made by the counsel for the 1st, 2nd, and 4th defendants, Abubakar Marshall, that “anyone charged with a criminal offense is presumed innocent until proven guilty.”

In light of this principle, Justice Nwite granted the bail application for all ten defendants. He stated, “I have carefully considered the submissions from both sides. I hereby grant the defendants bail, notwithstanding the charges against them.”

The judge specified that the bail was set at N10 million for each defendant, along with one surety of the same amount.

19-Year-Old Fatally Stabs Friend After Heated Argument in Lagos

A 19-year-old girl, Fatimo Agboke, allegedly stabbed her friend, Faruk Azeez, to death following a heated argument in the Ijegun area of Lagos on Monday night. The incident occurred around 9:20 PM. Despite efforts to rush the 20-year-old victim to the hospital, Faruk Azeez succumbed to his injuries.

According to the Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the father of the deceased reported the tragic event to the Isheri Oshun Division after receiving a distress call from a neighbor.

"The complainant from Ijegun informed us that his son, Azeez, had a disagreement with a female friend, Fatimo Agboke, which escalated into a physical altercation. During the fight, Fatimo allegedly stabbed Faruk in the neck with a broken bottle, causing severe injuries," Hundeyin explained.

Upon receiving the report, police detectives quickly arrived at the scene and found Azeez lying in a pool of blood with a deep wound on his neck. His body has since been transported to Mainland General Hospital in Yaba for an autopsy.

SP Hundeyin confirmed that the suspect, Fatimo Agboke, was immediately arrested and remains in police custody. He assured the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing to uncover all the details surrounding the tragic incident.

"This is a deeply unfortunate event, and we want to reassure the public that justice will be served," Hundeyin stated. "The suspect is in custody, and we are investigating all angles to ensure the truth is revealed."

The Ijegun community has been left in shock, as neighbors and friends mourn the sudden loss of Azeez, described by many as a vibrant young man with a bright future. Police are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward as the investigation continues.
