VDM to Reps Panel: “May I Die If I Speak Falsely”

Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has refused to provide further details regarding the allegations made by Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, accusing officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS) of demanding N15 million for preferential treatment in the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre, Lagos.

While addressing the Investigating Committee, VDM expressed his frustration, saying, "I don’t understand why I’m here when the person who made these allegations isn’t present. Bobrisky mentioned a godfather in the voice note. Maybe the godfather told him not to show up. He has disrespected this committee by not appearing."

Feeling under pressure, VDM added, "You’re already threatening me with arrest. If you detain me, I will remain in the cell. But if Bobrisky isn’t here, I won’t say anything. If I speak, may I die."

As of the time of this report, members of the committee were urging VDM to cooperate, assuring him that Bobrisky would also be required to face the panel.

Bobrisky: VDM, Lawyer Appear for House of Reps Probe

Social media influencer Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, and his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, appeared at the National Assembly Complex for a joint committee investigation into corruption allegations against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS).

The investigation follows claims made by controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, alias Bobrisky, who alleged that EFCC and NCS officials demanded bribes to allow him to serve his prison term in a VIP section. Bobrisky was convicted in April for naira abuse and claimed his godfather arranged for him to serve his six-month sentence in a private apartment with the help of the NCS's Controller General.

In response, the NCS suspended two senior officers, including Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, Deputy Controller of Corrections at Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre, for allegedly accepting bribes on behalf of inmates.

The House of Representatives decided to investigate these bribery allegations after a motion of urgent public importance was presented by Akwa Ibom State representative, Patrick Umoh. Umoh expressed concern over the accusations against both the EFCC and NCS, emphasizing that the claims, widely publicized by VeryDarkMan, undermine the credibility of Nigeria’s key law enforcement institutions.

The Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, referred the motion to the Committees on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Institutions for further investigation.

Documents and Electronics Destroyed in Fire at Kwara State High Courtroom

A courtroom in the Kwara State High Court Complex in Ilorin was completely destroyed by fire on Sunday night, as reported. According to an eyewitness, the blaze erupted shortly after 8:00 PM, consuming one courtroom before the state Fire Service was able to contain it.

The State Fire Service attributed the fire to a power surge in the area surrounding the High Court complex. Among the items lost in the fire were two air conditioners, a plasma television, a fan, various documents, and courtroom furniture.

The fire service confirmed that only Courtroom No. 10 was affected, and their rapid response prevented the flames from spreading to other courtrooms and offices.

Hassan Adekunle, the State Fire Service spokesman, provided details of the incident, stating, "On Sunday, 29th September 2024, at approximately 08:02 hours, the Kwara State Fire Service swiftly responded to a fire outbreak at the High Court in Ilorin. Our fire truck and crew promptly left the station to address the situation.

"Upon arrival, we found that Courtroom No. 10 was already engulfed in flames, with the fire threatening adjacent courtrooms. Thanks to the bravery of our firefighters, we were able to contain the fire and prevent more extensive damage to the Ilorin High Court."

Investigations revealed that the fire originated from a standing air conditioner due to a power surge. Adekunle noted that both the special adviser to the state governor on special duties, Alhaji AbdulRazaq Jiddah, and the chief judge of the state, Justice Abiodun Adebara, were present at the scene and commended the firefighters for their prompt action.

He also urged the public to remain vigilant and safety-conscious to prevent future fire incidents.
