#NigeriaAt64: Thugs Disrupt Protests in Port Harcourt

On Tuesday, thugs took control of the protest site at Port Harcourt Pleasure Park, previously used during the August #EndBadGovernance protest. In response, one of the protest organizers announced that they would shift their gathering point to the Rumuokwuta flyover. However, another group of thugs had already assembled at that location.

The protest grounds were initially designated as the meeting point for the “Fearless in October” demonstration against economic hardships in Nigeria. The armed hoodlums, wielding canes, declared that they opposed any protests in Rivers State and threatened to assault any journalists who attempted to film them.

While the protests faced disruptions in Port Harcourt, similar demonstrations were taking place in other cities like Lagos and Abuja as Nigeria marked its 64th Independence Day Anniversary. The protesters are demanding that President Bola Tinubu's administration reverse the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates, which they believe are driving inflation and increasing living costs across the country.

Spain and Barcelona Legend Iniesta to Retire at 40

Andrés Iniesta, considered one of the greatest midfielders in football history, is set to retire at 40. The Spanish legend will officially announce his decision on October 8, marking the end of a remarkable career spanning over two decades.

In a teaser video posted on his X page, Iniesta hinted at the announcement with the message, "Coming soon 8/10/24." His football journey began at Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, where his exceptional ball control, vision, and composure quickly set him apart.

Iniesta’s brilliance earned him praise from many, including Pep Guardiola, who famously said to Xavi, "You’re going to retire me. This lad [Iniesta] is going to retire us all." Known for his technical mastery, FIFA.com described him as a player with "the ball seeming glued to his toes," while Vicente del Bosque called him "a complete footballer."

During his 22 years at Barcelona, Iniesta won 35 trophies, including nine La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns, making him the most decorated Spanish player ever. He also played a crucial role in Spain's international success, helping secure Euro 2008, Euro 2012, and the 2010 World Cup, where he scored the winning goal in the final.

After leaving Barcelona in 2018, Iniesta continued his career with Vissel Kobe in Japan and later, the UAE's Emirates club. His unmatched game intelligence and close control have cemented his legacy as one of football’s finest midfielders.

Police Uses Teargas on Protesters in Abuja

On Tuesday, police officers fired tear gas at protesters during the "Fearless in October" demonstration against bad governance in Abuja, Nigeria. The protesters, waving the Nigerian Green-White-Green flag and carrying banners with messages like "End Bad Governance," "Diaspora Voting," and "End High Living Costs," gathered in the Utako area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) before being dispersed by the police.

The October 1, 2024 protests, organized under the hashtag #FearlessInOctober, gained momentum on social media just two months after the August #EndBadGovernance protests. Both protests shared common themes, with frustrated young Nigerians demanding the reversal of the removal of fuel subsidies and the increase in electricity tariffs.

Critics have heavily criticized President Bola Tinubu’s policies, particularly the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates, which are widely believed to have fueled soaring inflation and the steep rise in living costs. Since Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023, energy prices have skyrocketed, with petrol prices per liter rising from around N200 to over N1,000, and electricity tariffs quadrupling, affecting both the manufacturing sector and ordinary Nigerians.

In his 64th Independence Day Anniversary address, President Tinubu appealed for more patience and understanding, acknowledging the economic hardships caused by his reforms. He assured Nigerians that his administration is working to alleviate the rising cost of living and is committed to implementing policies aimed at benefiting the common citizen.

Nigeria at 64: Reform is Essential to Avoid Collapse — Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu emphasized the need for Nigeria to undergo essential reforms to avoid collapse and ensure future prosperity. He acknowledged that past mistakes and missed opportunities had placed the country in a precarious situation but assured Nigerians that his administration, which began 16 months ago, was committed to reforming the political economy and defense systems.

In his national address on Nigeria's 64th Independence anniversary, Tinubu highlighted several key reforms his government has initiated. These include addressing fiscal misalignments, reducing debt, and attracting over $30 billion in foreign direct investments. He also noted efforts to stabilize the economy and improve security, stating that significant progress had been made in combating terrorism and banditry, with over 300 militant commanders eliminated within a year.

Tinubu commended the Central Bank's monetary policies, which have ensured stability in the foreign exchange market, and announced various initiatives aimed at reducing the cost of living, including agricultural production programs and plans for more affordable public transportation through the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for mass transit.

The President reiterated his commitment to Local Government autonomy and promised to tackle rising living costs. He also praised the resilience of the Nigerian people and called for unity in overcoming the country's challenges. Tinubu concluded by announcing upcoming initiatives for the youth, including a National Youth Conference aimed at addressing challenges and opportunities for Nigeria’s younger generation.
