Ogun Police Investigate Alleged Arson as Herders Set Cassava Farm Ablaze

The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into an alleged case of arson and destruction of farmland involving some cattle herders who reportedly set fire to a 35-acre cassava farm in Adao Village, near Alabata, Abeokuta.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the development in a statement to journalists on Friday, February 21, 2025.

According to the report, Mr. Ogunbayo Adewale, a resident of Raka Village, visited his farmland on February 19, 2025, at around 4:40 PM, only to discover that it had been deliberately set ablaze. He also noticed a herd of cattle grazing on the farm, with several cassava plants already uprooted and damaged.

Odutola stated:

“Upon sighting the complainant, the herders commanded the cattle to flee, but he managed to apprehend one of the cows and brought it to the police station as evidence.”

Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of FUNAAB Harmony Division swiftly deployed grassroots policing strategies to ease tensions and prevent potential ethnic clashes in the area.

Preliminary investigations have since led to the identification of the owner of the seized cow, while Adewale has estimated the total damage to his farmland at ₦27.3 million.

To ensure a thorough and impartial investigation, the case has been transferred to the surveillance section for further inquiries and legal action.

The Ogun State Police Command has urged all parties to remain calm while investigations continue, assuring the public that justice will be served.

“The command remains committed to maintaining law and order, preventing inter-group conflicts, and protecting the rights of all citizens,” Odutola stated.

Authorities have vowed to bring those responsible to justice and prevent further occurrences of such incidents in the state.

Mohbad passed away on September 12, 2023, and was buried the following day. However, his body was later exhumed by the police on September 21, 2023, for an autopsy as part of ongoing investigations into his death.

In October 2024, Primeboy had warned of legal action against Abosede, accusing her of falsely claiming that he had an altercation with her son before his death.

In a letter, the first page of which was shared via Instagram, Primeboy described Abosede’s alleged remarks as “libelous, injurious, and malicious.” He demanded ₦50 million in exemplary damagesfor what he claimed was a deliberate attempt to tarnish his reputation.

The letter reads in part:

“The sum of ₦50,000,000.00 (Fifty Million Naira only) being exemplary damages for libelous, injurious, false, and malicious statements made by the Defendant in a video interview on March 28, 2024, and published across several news and online media platforms, aimed at defaming the Claimant in the eyes of right-thinking members of society.”

The legal notice also instructed Abosede to respond within 42 days, warning that failure to do so would result in the case proceeding in her absence.

“You are hereby commanded that within 42 (forty-two) days after the service of this Writ on you, inclusive of the day of such service, you do cause an appearance to be entered for you in an action at the suit of the Claimant,” the letter further stated.

The lawsuit has sparked reactions among Mohbad’s fans and the public, as the late singer’s death remains a subject of controversy.
