FG Approves 50% Increase in Inmates’ Feeding Allowance

The Federal Government has approved a 50% increase in the feeding allowance for inmates in Nigeria’s Custodial Centres, effective from August 2024, to enhance their welfare. Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, NCoS spokesperson Umar Abubakar explained that the increase was prompted by rising food costs.

Abubakar also addressed a viral video showing inmates in Cross River State complaining about inadequate food, noting that the video doesn't reflect the service's commitment to reforming inmates. He confirmed an investigation is underway.

Additionally, over 1,000 inmates are pursuing university degrees, with six studying for PhDs, as part of efforts to rehabilitate and prepare them for reintegration into society. Abubakar highlighted the conducive environment created for skill acquisition and personal development within the custodial centres.

Gunmen Abduct Babcock University Staff Member in Ogun

On Thursday, unknown gunmen abducted Mrs. Elizabeth Uruakpa, a 66-year-old assistant chief nursing officer at Babcock University Teaching Hospital, Ilisan Remo. Uruakpa was reportedly returning from an evening church service when the gunmen, who had been lying in wait, attacked her near her home by the new Ilisan market.

Witnesses said the gunmen dragged her from her vehicle and forced her into their red Toyota before speeding off, causing panic in the neighborhood as residents quickly locked their doors.

A local resident, speaking anonymously, confirmed that Uruakpa is a senior nurse at the hospital and a member of Winners' Chapel. He described the abduction as shocking and unprecedented in the area.

Dr. Joshua Suleiman, Babcock University's Director of Communication and Marketing, acknowledged the incident but said more details were being gathered. Attempts to reach the Ogun State Police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered at the time of reporting.
