Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC) against disrupting democratic processes in Osun State’s local government administration.
Speaking on Sunday during the swearing-in ceremony of 30 newly elected local government chairmen in Osun, Makinde urged the APC not to use federal influence to derail democracy.
“Recently, we gathered in Lagos for the South-West Governors’ Forum meeting, where both PDP and APC governors were present. Our goal was to address common regional challenges and seek support from higher authorities to ensure good governance.
“However, the recent developments in Osun, which led to loss of lives, prompted us to step in and issue a warning. We are aware of the historical struggles of the South-West, especially when it was labeled the ‘Wild Wild West.’ We must prevent a repeat of such chaos.
“We are focused on delivering democracy’s benefits to the people, and no one should resort to self-help. Even with a court judgment, due process must be followed. Having federal backing doesn’t give anyone the right to truncate democratic processes—this is a federal system,” Makinde stated.
He congratulated the newly elected chairmen, urging them to fulfill their campaign promises and serve their people effectively.
“Congratulations to the newly elected chairpersons of Osun’s 30 Local Government Areas. Don’t forget the promises you made during your campaign. This is your opportunity to make an impact at the grassroots level. With the support of your governor and the state government, I hope you will deliver.
“For many of you, this may be a stepping stone to higher positions because hard work always leads to greater responsibilities,” he added.
Governor Makinde attended the event in Osogbo alongside PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, in solidarity with Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke.
“We are here to witness this significant event and show our support for the government and people of Osun State,” Makinde told the gathering.
The Osun local government elections were marked by controversy. The PDP won all chairmanship seats, but the APC dismissed the election.
The police and Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, had advised the Osun government against proceeding with the polls due to security and legal concerns. However, Governor Adeleke remained firm, stating on Friday that the election would proceed as planned.
