Osun Monarch Aromolaran Passes Away At 86

The Owa-Obokun of Ijesaland, a first-class monarch in Osun State, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran, has passed away. His death was confirmed in a statement signed by the Asiwaju of Ijesaland, Chief Yinka Fasuyi, on Thursday in Osogbo, the state capital.

Prior to the official announcement, concerns had been raised about Oba Aromolaran’s health, with reports suggesting he had been unwell. Fasuyi, in a heartfelt tribute, described the monarch’s passing as the end of an era, writing, "A Monumental History Closes! The Lion Departs The Forest! The Torch Bearer Of Oduduwa Relocates! The Pride Of Yoruba Traditional Intellectualism Exits!"

Fasuyi praised the Owa-Obokun’s 42-year reign, which he referred to as a period of great legacy and royal distinction for Ijesaland. He concluded his tribute by celebrating the monarch’s impactful leadership, saying, "Ijesaland Applauds The Legacy Of Our Paramount Ruler! 42 Years Of Monumental Reign Comes To A Glorious End."

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also expressed his condolences via his X account on Thursday, recalling the late monarch’s fatherly warmth and describing him as a symbol of courage, boldness, and discipline—qualities that represented the spirit of the Ijesha people.

Oba Aromolaran ascended the throne on February 20, 1982, and served as the Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland and Chairman of the Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers. He celebrated his 80th birthday in October 2017 and remained a revered figure until his passing.

Tinubu Approves N108bn For States To Tackle Flood and Erosion

President Bola Tinubu has approved N108 billion for the 36 states to address flooding and other natural disasters. This was revealed by Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday during a meeting at the State House in Abuja.

While receiving Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, Shettima described the flooding in Maiduguri as a "national calamity" and emphasized the President’s commitment to tackling the crisis. "The President has shown his dedication to partnering with states to address these issues," Shettima said. He added that Tinubu recently approved N3 billion for each state to help mitigate these challenges, ensuring that all regions feel included.

Shettima also praised Speaker Tajudeen’s leadership in the National Assembly, particularly in maintaining stability despite a large number of newly sworn-in members. "There is great stability in the House of Representatives, and we commend you for providing that leadership," he remarked, noting the importance of a harmonious relationship between the executive, legislature, and judiciary in sustaining Nigeria’s democracy.

Speaker Tajudeen expressed his sympathy to Shettima, President Tinubu, and the people of Borno State, pledging the National Assembly’s support for those affected by the disaster. "We in the National Assembly are committed to offering support to the affected communities. We share your pain and concerns," he said. Tajudeen also assured that efforts would be made to help restore the livelihoods of those displaced by the flooding.

He concluded by asking Shettima to convey the National Assembly's sincere condolences and support to the governor and people of Borno State.

Maiduguri Flood Leaves 30 Dead, Displaces Over 400,000 Households

Severe flooding in Maiduguri, northeastern Nigeria, has resulted in the deaths of at least 30 people and displaced over 400,000 residents, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

"The death toll stands at 30," Ezekiel Manzo, a spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), told AFP. The disaster occurred after an overflowing dam caused widespread destruction, sweeping away thousands of homes in Borno State's capital.

Zubaida Umar, another NEMA official, described the situation as "quite frightening," noting that "the flood has engulfed around 40 percent of the entire city." Many residents have been displaced, with over 414,000 people forced to flee their homes, scattered across various parts of the city. Umar also warned that the number of displaced could rise to one million.

The UN refugee agency in Nigeria noted on X (formerly Twitter) that this is the worst flooding the city has experienced in 30 years.

One Year Later, Mohbad’s Fans Renew Calls for Justice

A peaceful demonstration took place outside the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ikorodu on Wednesday, marking the one-year anniversary of the controversial death of Nigerian street-hop artist, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, who passed away on September 12, 2023, in Lagos.

The protest, tagged "Justice for Mohbad," was led by Yoruba actor Yomi Fabiyi, near the court where the ongoing coroner's inquest into Mohbad's death is taking place. Mohbad's death, initially followed by a swift burial, sparked nationwide outrage, leading to his body being exhumed a week later for a post-mortem examination. Witnesses and online reports at the time claimed his neck appeared to have been broken to fit into the casket.

Fans and close associates of Mohbad also uncovered videos and images of alleged assaults on him, reportedly orchestrated by former music associates from Marlian Records after he parted ways with them to pursue independence. As public sympathy grew, accusations and online backlash mounted against Marlian Records founder Naira Marley, his associate Sam Larry, and artist Zinoleesky, all of whom faced cyberbullying from angry fans.

Following these events, Mohbad's body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, as part of the investigation into his death. In February of this year, reports indicated delays in the release of his autopsy results, as samples were sent to NMS Labs in Pennsylvania, USA, for toxicology and skeletal analysis. The prolonged delay in receiving the results has fueled public suspicion.

In response to the protest, Mohbad's mother, Mrs. Abosede Aloba, called for prayers for her late son. She also urged authorities to release Mohbad's remains for a proper burial. "Whatever Mohbad’s father says is final. We do not support any celebration in remembrance of our son. The best you can do is to pray for him," she stated, adding that the family wishes to resolve the ongoing issues and move on.

Mohbad, also known as "Imole," was a Nigerian rapper, singer, and songwriter. He was formerly signed to Naira Marley’s Marlian Records but left in 2022 to start his own label, Imolenization. Some of his popular songs include "Peace," "Ko Por Ke (KPK)," and "Sabi." He was married to his longtime partner, Wunmi, with whom he had a son.
