FG Issues Flood Warning as Cameroon Releases Water from Lagdo Dam

On Tuesday, the Federal Government alerted Nigerians about the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon. In a statement, Umar Muhammed, the Director General and CEO of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), announced that regulated water releases from the dam would begin on September 17.

The statement explained that water discharge is expected to gradually increase to 1000 cubic meters per second (m³/s) over the next seven days, depending on inflow from the upstream Garoua River. "The authorities of the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon have informed the agency that controlled water releases will start at a rate of 100 m³/s (8,640,000 m³/day) from September 17, 2023," the statement said.

It also noted that the gradual increase in water discharge is planned to avoid exceeding the capacity of the Benue River system, which could lead to significant flooding in downstream areas in Nigeria. Once there is a decrease in flow into the Lagdo reservoir, the overflow is expected to stop.

Despite the dam releases, NIHSA reassured the public that there is no immediate cause for concern. "Major flooding downstream in Nigeria is not expected, as the flow levels along the Benue River are still within cautionary limits," Muhammed stated.

However, he urged all states along the Benue River, including Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Rivers, to remain vigilant and implement necessary preparedness measures to mitigate potential flooding risks.

The agency will continue to monitor water flow conditions in the transboundary Benue River and Nigeria’s inland rivers, providing regular updates to prevent further flood disasters.

Jay Jay Okocha Names Messi the Greatest Footballer of All Time

Nigerian football legend Jay Jay Okocha has weighed in on the ongoing debate about who is the greatest footballer of all time—Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. For nearly two decades, the two have dominated discussions about football greatness, amassing a combined 13 Ballon d'Or awards—Messi with eight and Ronaldo with five.

In a recent interview, Okocha praised both players but ultimately chose Messi as his personal favorite. He said, "They are both GOATs, but my personal GOAT is Messi because he looks more natural to me."

Okocha, who enjoyed a dazzling career from 1990 to 2012, became famous for his incredible skills, particularly during his time with Bolton Wanderers in England, where he earned the nickname “so good they named him twice.” His endorsement of Messi adds to the long-standing debate, joining opinions from other football legends like Paul Scholes, who also considers Messi to have an edge over Ronaldo.

BBNaija: Alleged Sexual Assault – Ben Threatens to Sue Handi, Wanni

Ben, an evicted Big Brother ‘No Loose Guard’ housemate, has threatened to take legal action against fellow housemates Wanni and Handi over alleged false accusations.

During his media rounds on Monday, Ben addressed the situation, recalling that Wanni had accused him of inappropriately touching her sister Handi's nipple while she was asleep.

In response, Ben stated that he has already informed his lawyer and management to take the necessary steps. He also revealed that he is waiting for footage from the show's organizers to support his case.

"I've informed my lawyer and manager about the matter," Ben said. "I've also requested the show organizers release the footage so I can press charges against Wanni and Handi for falsely accusing me. There are four cameras in that area, so there's no way something like that wouldn’t have been captured. I will press charges."
