Supreme Court Dismisses Perjury Suit Against President Buhari

The Supreme Court has dismissed the suit seeking the disqualification of President MUHAMMADU BUHARI in the 2019 presidential election over an alleged act of perjury.

The appellants, KALU KALU, LABARAN ISMAIL and HASSY EL-KURIS had approached the Apex Court accusing President BUHARI of lying under oath in a form he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2019 election.

But delivering judgment at the Apex court, the Justice MARY ODILI-led panel of five justices held that the case was statute-barred and therefore dismissed.

However, during the introduction of appearances, a member of the panel, Justice MUSA DATTIJOaccused President BUHARI of using ABDULLAHI ABUBAKAR, a senior counsel at the ministry of justice, for his private election-related matter.

The panel asked the lawyer if President BUHARI was sued as a private citizen or as president and he replied saying the president was being sued as a private citizen.

ODILI said ex-US President BILL CLINTON sponsored his own litigation personally, without involving the ministry of justice.

The court therefore faulted the use of taxpayers money to work on private litigation, describing it as a contravention of the provisions of the code of conduct for public officers.

Iwobi scores second goal in Everton’s triumph

Goals from Nigerian Alex Iwobi and Brazil’s Andrade Richarlison saw Everton triumph 3-2 over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

Iwobi netted his first Everton Premier League goal after converting Gylfi Sigurdsson’s cross with a header.

The 23-year-old’s goal put Marco Silva’s men ahead 2-1 in the 12th minute.

Iwobi scored his first goal for Everton in Wednesday’s League Cup outing against Lincoln City.

Both of Iwobi’s goals for Everton this season have come via headers; one more than during his time at Arsenal, where just one of his 15 goals for the Gunners were headers.

Richarlison opened score for the hosts at Goodison Park in the fifth minute but the lead was cancelled out by Moroccan Romain Saiss four minutes later. Richarlison added another in the 80th minute to ensure a 3-2 win for the hosts.

Amusan wins in Berlin after breaking AG record

Nigerian hurdler, Tobi Amusan, has extended her top form to Berlin, clocking 12.51secs to win the women’s 100m hurdles at ISTAF on Sunday.

She finished ahead of Christina Clemons, who clocked 12.69secs to emerge second and Nadine Visser, who placed third in 12.72secs. Nia Ali ran 12.76secs to place fourth and Cindy Roleder clocked 12.91secs to emerge fifth.

With the time, Amusan set the world’s fifth fastest performance this year.

The African record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles ran the second fastest time of her career, just behind her personal best of 12.49secs.

This is coming few days after the Nigerian broke a 20-year record at the just-concluded African Games in Morocco.

At the African Games, Amusan broke a 20-year-old record previously held by another Nigerian, Gloria Alozie, in the 100m women’s hurdles.

Coaches urge Dare to address athletes protests

President of the Track and Field Coaches Association of Nigeria, Godwin Ogogo, has called on the new Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare, to summon a stakeholders meeting on the challenges facing athletics in the country.

He said this while reacting to the complaints by athletes that they were subjected to lack of adequate welfare.

While proffering a solution to the challenges facing athletes and coaches, he said, “We should stop deceiving ourselves, there are serious challenges in Nigerian athletics. We have to critically look at how to resolve the challenges facing athletes and coaches.

“It is worst that as big as the ministry is, we don’t have coaching staff. Is the sports ministry meant for other things that coaches concerns are not included? How many sports’ councils in the states have coaching staff? In the federation, we do not have a representation.

“For us to move forward, the first thing the new minister must consider is to sit everyone down to hear our concerns if he wants to succeed.

“Why is it that almost every time that we go to competitions, athletes are always protesting? Are we the only country in this world that has star athletes? Our athletes are trying; nobody should blame anybody for not doing well. They should blame the people who are in-charge.”
