CBN, Bankers’ Committee Suspend Planned Lay-offs in Banks

The Central Bank of Nigeria and the bankers’ committee have agreed to suspend lay-offs in banks across the federation.

This agreement was reached at a special meeting of the Bankers’ Committee which was convened on May 2, 2020, to further review the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Nigerian banking industry.

At the special meeting, the Committee deliberated on the issue of the operating costs of banks in view of the disruptions emanating from the global economic difficulties.

The committee after deliberations decided that in order to help minimize the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on families and livelihoods, no bank in Nigeria shall retrench or lay-off any staff of any cadre (including full-time and part-time).

Nigeria Records 170 Fresh COVID-19 Cases, Total Confirmed Infections Now 2,558

The total infections from Corona virus in the country has risen to 2,558 as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control announced 170 new cases.

According to a tweet by the NCDC, of the new infections, 39 are in Lagos, 29 from Kano, 24 in Ogun and 18 from Bauchi.

The FCT and Sokoto had 12 each, while Katsina had 8 cases and 7 cases were recorded in Borno.

Four hundred patients have been discharged while 87 deaths have been recorded in the country.

Insufficient Bed Spaces To Accomodate Covid-19 Patients- NCDC Boss

The Director-General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr. CHIKWE IHEKWEAZU, says the country is facing challenges of inadequate bed spaces to accommodate COVID-19 patients in isolation centres.

He said this may affect efforts to curb the spread of coronavirus in the FCT, Lagos and Kano State.

Dr. CHIKWE IHEKWEAZU stated this during the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 daily briefing in Abuja.

According to him, there are about 3,500 bed spaces available across the country which has recorded over 1,728 cases of COVID-19 and tracing over 10,000.

Bauchi Governor Mandates Chloroquine As Treatment For Covid-19

Bauchi state Governor, BALA MUHAMMED has mandated the use of chloroquine and Zithromax to treat coronavirus patients in the state.

The Governor, at a briefing said he accepts responsibility for the consequences that may result from the use of the drugs.

Chloroquine, and a related derivative, hydroxychloroquine, have gained attention for the treatment of the deadly coronavirus, but the World Health Organization says there’s no definitive evidence they work.

Governor BALA MUHAMMED said, from personal experience, he believes the drugs are effective and advised health personnel to ignore warnings from health experts abroad.

MUHAMMED was Bauchi’s index COVID-19 patient but has fully recovered after treatment.
