2024 MTV EMAs: Tyla Shines While Nigerian Artists Miss Out

South African sensation Tyla stole the spotlight at the 30th MTV Europe Music Awards in Manchester, United Kingdom, on Sunday, taking home three major awards. She claimed the Best Afrobeats Artist title, triumphing over Nigerian stars Asake, Tems, Rema, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr.

Tyla also took home the Best African Act award, beating nominees Ayra Starr, Asake, DBN Gogo, TitoM & Yuppe, and Diamond Platnumz. For her third win of the night, she secured the Best R&B Artist award, standing out among global stars like Kehlani, SZA, Tinashe, Usher, and Victoria Monét. Tyla capped her triumphant night with an acoustic performance of her hit song "Water."

Meanwhile, Nigerian artist Ayra Starr, nominated in four categories—Best African Act, Best New Artist, Best Afrobeats Artist, and Best Push—did not take home any awards.

This victory adds to Tyla's impressive year, following her win at the Grammys for Best African Music Performance and her Best Afrobeats Artist win at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, where she also surpassed several Nigerian artists.

Osimhen Dedicates Two-Goal Performance to Injured Icardi

Victor Osimhen displayed a touching gesture on Sunday, dedicating his two goals in Galatasaray's 3-2 victory over Samsunspor to his injured teammate, Mauro Icardi. The Nigerian striker scored early, giving his team a lead just three minutes into the Turkish Super Lig Game Week 12 match, and added another in the 55th minute after Jules Ntcham’s penalty equalized for the visitors. Celebrating his goals, Osimhen lifted Icardi’s shirt in front of the fans at RAMS Park in Istanbul, showing his support.

The 25-year-old, who joined Galatasaray on a season-long loan from Napoli in September, has quickly become a key player, tallying six league goals in as many games and eight across all competitions. His partnership with Icardi and former Napoli teammate Dries Mertens has made Galatasaray’s attack one of the most formidable in the league.

Icardi, however, faces a challenging recovery after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury in Galatasaray’s recent 3-2 Europa League win over Tottenham Hotspur. The Argentine, who had already dealt with a muscle injury earlier this season, was stretchered off during Thursday’s game. Galatasaray confirmed that Icardi, 31, has meniscus damage and is scheduled for surgery, with rehabilitation already underway.

Currently, Galatasaray leads the Turkish Super Lig and holds third place in their Europa League group, maintaining a strong position both domestically and in Europe.

36 States’ Debts Climb to N11.4 Trillion Despite IGR and FAAC Allocations

As of June 30, 2024, the combined debt of Nigeria's 36 states rose to N11.47 trillion, reflecting a 14.57% increase from N10.01 trillion in December 2023. This debt surge occurred despite federal allocations through the Federal Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) and each state’s internally generated revenue (IGR).

Data from the Debt Management Office (DMO) reveals that external debt for the states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) grew from $4.61 billion to $4.89 billion over this period. In naira terms, the foreign debt component rose by 73.46%, from N4.15 trillion to N7.2 trillion, largely due to the naira’s devaluation from N899.39/$1 in December 2023 to N1,470.19/$1 by mid-2024.

On the other hand, domestic debt for the states and FCT decreased from N5.86 trillion to N4.27 trillion. Altogether, states and the FCT accounted for 10.29% of Nigeria’s total public debt, which stood at N134.3 trillion in June 2024.

Tinubu Urges Nigerian Graduates to Resist the Urge to ‘Japa’

President Bola Tinubu recently encouraged Nigerian university graduates to embrace patriotism and resist the urge to seek opportunities abroad. Speaking at the 29th and 30th combined convocation ceremony of the University of Uyo, Tinubu, represented by Prof. Owunari Georgewill, Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, urged the graduates to become catalysts for change in Nigeria by using their skills to address local challenges.

"As you step into the world, I encourage you to be agents of transformation, leveraging your knowledge and skills to elevate our society and contribute to Nigeria’s progress," Tinubu said. He appealed to the graduates' sense of patriotism, urging them to avoid the impulse to seek greener pastures elsewhere, emphasizing that “we can make our pastures as green or even greener than others.”

Tinubu highlighted his administration’s efforts to ease economic challenges, particularly for vulnerable groups. He acknowledged the country's research potential, urging universities to prioritize practical, demand-driven research that would enhance lives.

Prof. Zubairu Abdullah, University Pro-chancellor and Governing Council Chairman, thanked Tinubu for introducing the student loan program and other educational reforms. However, he raised concerns about issues like land encroachment, requesting government support to build a perimeter fence around the university.

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, who received an honorary doctorate in political science during the event, described the degree as a recognition of perseverance and the boundless potential achievable through belief and dedication. He expressed renewed motivation to serve the state.

In his address, University Vice Chancellor Prof. Nyaudo Ndaeyo acknowledged the challenges posed by the economic climate but praised the institution’s accomplishments, including infrastructure developments, a university printing press, and achieving over 90% accreditation for its programs.
