FG directs COVID-19 isolation centres to prepare for reopening

The federal government has asked COVID-19 treatment centres across the country to prepare for reopening.

Some of the centres were shut after the country recorded a decline in cases.

However, there has been a surge in COVID-19 cases, with warning that there might be a second wave of the pandemic in the country.

Speaking at the briefing of the presidential task force on COVID-19 on Thursday, Osagie Ehanire, minister of health, said he had directed health workers to be on red alert.

“We are seeing the increase in the number of confirmed covid19 cases in the last few days, which we have frequently alluded to in recent times. This rightly suggests that we may just be on the verge of a second wave of this pandemic. Last week, we recorded 1843 against 1,235 two weeks before that and 1,126 the week before that,” he said.

“In the past 24 hours, 474 new confirmed cases and 2 deaths were recorded, with an indication that this week’s figure will beat last week’s. As at today, we have crossed 70,000 mark with a total of 70,669 confirmed cases of which 65,242 have been treated and discharged. Sadly the number of deaths has now reached 1184 as against 1,167 two weeks before.

“Everyone of us has a role to play in the effort to prevent explosive spread of this infection in Nigeria. While we strive for the best, we must prepare for a possible second wave which we must ensure, does not get to be worse than what we have seen so far, judging from what we observe in other countries.

“The US, UK and other countries are going through very difficult times, and we do sympathize with them. To prepare ourselves, I have directed that all Isolation and Treatment Centres, which were hitherto closed due to reduced patient load, to be prepared for reopening and the staff complement put on alert.”

Asuu Denies Any Agreement With Federal Government To End Strike By December 9.

The national leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says the union’s negotiating team did not reach an agreement with the Federal Government to end the eight-month strike on December 9.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. CHRIS NGIGE, told journalists on Tuesday that ASUU had last month agreed to end the strike by December 9.

ASUU President, Professor BIODUN OGUNYEMI, who made the clarification in a statement said the union representatives only told the government’s delegation that they would take the government’s offer to the union branches and report back later.

He added that there was nothing in the government’s offer of November 27 to suggest that the union has agreed to suspend the strike.

Buhari Fails To Address House Of Reps On Insecurity

President MUHAMMADU BUHARI today failed to address the federal lawmakers on the security situation in the country as the House of Representatives held plenary.

Members of the House of Representatives had on December 1 passed a resolution to invite President BUHARI to brief the house on the true state of the security situation in the country.

A lawmaker from Rivers State, SOLOMON BOB, raised a point of order over the President’s refusal to honour the invitation of the house.

Speaker FEMI GBAJABIAMILA responded by saying the House will wait for official communication from the president.

FG approves N1.1bn expansion work on Maiduguri airport, insurance cover for 22 airports

The Federal Executive Council has approved the sum of N1.1 billion for the expansion of the apron of Maiduguri airport and insurance cover for 22 airports across the country.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made this known to State House correspondents at the end of the council’s meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Wednesday.

He said“The first memo was a contract for the expansion of the apron of Maiduguri airport.

“This contract is worth N719,117,868.60. The expansion of the Maiduguri airport has become necessary because of the increased traffic at the airport that apron needs to be expanded to avoid aircraft being parked wing to wing and that might result in accidents.

“The second contract was for insurance and it was awarded to ensure assets such as terminal buildings in 22 airports belonging to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria in the sum of N390,055,687.45 and both memos were approved by council.”

The minister disclosed that he also briefed the Council on the outcome of meeting with stakeholders in his home state, Kwara, in the aftermath of the #ENDSARS protest in the state.

“We had about 39 other stakeholders ranging from CAN, JNI, the Youth Organisations, ASUU, NMA, NBA, and the whole idea was to reach out to as many stakeholders as possible – market men and market women,’’ he added.

The Ministers of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouk and that of Mines and Steel Development, Uche Ogah, said they also briefed the council.

They said their briefings were on the outcome of their meetings with stakeholders in their home states in the aftermath of the #ENDSARS protests in Zamfara and Abia.

While fielding questions from the correspondents, Ogah dismissed the allegation of extortions against the police in the Southeast Zone of the country.

He noted that the presence of security officials in the zone had continued to attract investments to the Southeast.

He said: “I presented my report from my state, Abia and Hon. Emeka Nwajiuba presented for Imo State and we were able to convey Mr President’s message to the people in our various states.

“Majorly, one high point that I want to say critically was in Abia, a documentary was done showing issues concerning war. There is no need for anybody to encourage war any more.

“War does not bring prosperity but peace brings prosperity to the entire world, and that is why we stand for one indivisible nation, Nigeria for everyone.

“That’s what Mr President stands for and this government has done a lot for this nation within this period which we shared with the people and they are happy with the performance of the Federal Government.

“Except that they feel that most of the information is not getting down and which we have started passing on to the people that this is what the government is doing. So, I believe that the information is getting out there and people are happy with what the Federal Government is doing.’’
