Omoyele Sowore’s Appeal Against Bail Conditions Slated for Hearing on July 8

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has fixed July 8 for the hearing of the appeal filed by Convener of Revolution Now, Omoyele Sowore, and his co-defendant, Adebayo Bakare, to challenge the bail conditions restricting their movements to Abuja and Osogbo.

The three-man panel led by Justice Abdul Aboki adjourned the proceedings on Wednesday to enable the Federal Government to file its respondent’s brief in response to the appeal.

Sowore and Bakare are being prosecuted before Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court in Abuja on treasonable felony charges.

They were charged following call last year for ‘RevolutionNow’ protests, which the prosecution alleged were aimed at toppling the regime of the President Muhammadu Buhari.

Former Abia Governor Orji Uzor Kalu Released from Prison

Former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, has been released from Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja.

His release was ordered by Justice Mohammed Liman of the Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday following is conviction for alleged mismanagement of N7.65 billion belonging to the state.

He was sentenced to a 12-year jail term last December.

Kalu had filed an application asking the court to order his release from the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kuje, Abuja, after his conviction was nullified by the Supreme Court.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned Kalu and Ude Jones Udeogu, a former director of finance and account of Abia state on 36 counts of money laundering to the tune of N7.1 billion.

Nigeria Confirms 348 New COVID-19 Cases, Total Now 11,166

Nigeria has confirmed 348 new cases of the novel coronavirus also known as COVID-19.

Confirming the cases on its official Twitter handle, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) stated that 163 of the cases are in Lagos, FCT-76 Ebonyi-23 Rivers-21 Delta-8 Nasarawa-8 Niger-8 Enugu-6 Bauchi-5 Edo-5 Ekiti-5 Ondo-5 Gombe-5 Benue-4 Ogun-2 Osun-1 Plateau-1 Kogi-1 Anambra-1.

With the latest addition, the total number of confirmed cases has hit 11,166 in the country with 3,329 discharged and 315 deaths.

One Person

One person has been arrested by the Edo State Police Command in connection with the rape and murder of the 100-level Microbiology student of the University of Benin, Miss VERA UWAILA OMOZUWA.

This comes as President, BUHARI on his verified Twitter handle, urged the police to ensure that UWAILA’s killers were brought to justice.

Spokesman for the command, CHIDI NWABUZOR, who disclosed this, said the suspect was arrested following the screening of  fingerprints on the fire extinguisher allegedly used to smash the deceased’s head.

According to NWABUZOR, operatives of the command arrested the suspect after the Area Commander of the Ikpoba Hill Police Station mobilised his men to the scene.

Her killing sparked outrage and protests in Benin, Lagos and Abuja, with the hashtag, #JusticeForUwa, trending on the social media.
