NCDC Announces 260 New Cases of Covid-19

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has announced 260 new coronavirus cases thereby increasing the country’s total infections to 12, 486.

This comes as the federal government raised alarm over rising number of cases compared to bed-spaces available for patients that are being treated for the disease.

The NCDC in a tweet on Sunday night said Abia State recorded the highest number of infections for the day in the country with 67 cases while the FCT and Lagos State had 40 and 38 cases respectively.

A further breakdown of the new cases showed that Ogun State has 19 infections, Gombe16, Edo14, Imo 9, Kwara 8 and Katsina 8.

Of the number of positive cases in Nigeria, 3959 persons have fully recovered and discharged with 354 deaths, according to the latest figure from the NCDC.

Buhari Nominates Okonjo-Iweals as DG, WTO

President, BUHARI has approved the nomination of a former Coordinating Minister for the Economy, NGOZI OKONJO-IWEALA, for the position of Director-General of the World Trade Organisation.

This followed the withdrawal of the candidacy of YONOV AGAH, Nigeria’s permanent representative to WTO, for the same position.

The election is scheduled to hold in Geneva, Switzerland in 2021 for a four-year term that would run from 2021 to 2025 after former Director-General of the organisation, ROBERTO AZEVEDO, stepped down a year to the end of his second term.

AGAH is Nigeria’s permanent representative to the WTO and the organisation’s deputy director-general.

OKONJO-IWEALA currently chairs the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, a public-private global health partnership with the goal of increasing access to immunisation in poor countries.

She also sits on the board of Twitter and is a former Managing Director (operations) at the World Bank.

Sen Lawan, Sen Principal Officers Welcome Kalu From Prison

Senate President, AHMAD LAWAN, led other principal officers to welcome back one of their members, Senator ORJI UZOR KALU, from the Correctional Service in Kuje, Abuja.

KALU, a former governor of Abia State, who is the current Chief Whip of the Senate and others, was in December last year, convicted and sentenced for N7.1bn fraud.

Justice MOHAMMED IDRIS, who was elevated to the Court of Appeal bench, had returned to the Federal High Court in Lagos to complete the case, which started in 2007.

The Federal High Court led Justice MOHAMMED LIMAN before whom the applicant’s motion was pending, however, granted the prayer of the applicant, and ordered his release from the Kuje prison custody on Tuesday.

350 New Cases of Covid-19 Recorded in Nigeria

350 new cases of Coronavirus has been recorded increasing the total infections in the country to 11,516.

The new cases were confirmed last night in 19 states and the FCT by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Twitter.

Data from the NCDC showed that Lagos accounted for the highest number of infections with 102 cases, Ogun-34, FCT-29, Borno-26, Kaduna-23, Rivers-21, Ebonyi-17, Kwara -16, Katsina-14, Edo, Delta, Kano and Bauchi with 10 fresh cases each.

Other states with new cases include; Bayelsa-9, Imo-8, Plateau-, Ondo-3, Nasarawa-2, Gombe and Oyo with one case each.

So far 3,535 patients have been discharged while 323 lost the battle against the virus.
