Court Adjourns Falana’s Case Against VDM to January 2025

The Lagos High Court has postponed the hearing of a defamation suit against social media influencer Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), to January 23, 2025. The suit was filed by human rights lawyer Femi Falana and his son, musician and activist Folarin Falana, known as Falz.

VDM, who arrived in court dressed in a red native attire and surrounded by cheering supporters, faced an empty courtroom as the Falanas were not present. The case was adjourned because several key applications submitted by both parties had not yet been added to the court’s file.

On October 14, Justice Matthias Dawodu had ruled in favor of the Falanas’ request for an interim order, noting they have a legal right to protect their reputation from slander. He ordered VDM to remove an alleged defamatory video from September 24, 2025, which claimed that the Falanas accepted a bribe of N10 million from Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, to influence justice. The court further restrained VDM from publishing any further defamatory content about the Falanas on his social media accounts until the suit is resolved.

In response, VDM filed for permission to appeal, arguing that denying him this opportunity could result in a miscarriage of justice. He emphasized that the case raises significant legal questions that warrant further review, adding, “A refusal to grant leave may lead to the enforcement of a decision that may not accurately reflect the law, impacting both the parties and the integrity of the judicial process.”

The Falanas are seeking N500 million in damages each, asserting that VDM's unverified claims have caused ongoing harm to their reputations due to the continued circulation of the video on his social media platforms.

Alleged Fraud: EFCC Grants Bail to Yahaya Bello’s Co-Defendants, Seeks Adjournment to Nov 27

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has requested an adjournment in its case against former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, explaining that the 30-day period for the previously issued summons is still active. The commission has granted administrative bail to his co-defendants, Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, and asked the court to extend the time for Bello to appear.

At the hearing before Justice Maryann Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, EFCC Counsel Jamiu Agoro noted that the court’s summons from October 3 had not yet expired. "We believe it is premature to proceed while the 30-day window is still open. We've agreed to reconvene on November 27, 2024, my lord," he stated.

Agoro also mentioned that the initial date of November 20 was unsuitable for the prosecution team. Counsel for the second defendant, Aliyu Saiki, SAN, confirmed that his client had received administrative bail from the EFCC and had no objections to the adjournment. ZE Abass, representing the third defendant, also agreed to the adjournment.

The prosecution further requested permission to serve notice of hearing at the first defendant’s last known address.

After considering all submissions, Justice Anenih granted the EFCC’s request for adjournment and approved the hearing notice. "I have reviewed the application for adjournment and issuance of hearing notice, and I grant it," she stated, rescheduling the case for arraignment on November 27.

Bello, alongside co-defendants Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, faces a fresh 16-count charge filed by the EFCC.
