Resident Doctors Begin Indefinite Strike at UNIMEDTH Over Poor Working Conditions

Members of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) in Ondo town have commenced an indefinite strike, citing poor working conditions and unresolved grievances.

The strike follows a protest on Monday, where the doctor’s expressed frustration over issues such as illegal salary deductions, excessive taxation, and the non-payment of hazard allowances.

Dr. Olaogbe Kehinde, President of UNIMEDTH ARD, stated that the workload on the remaining doctors has become overwhelming due to mass resignations and unnotified departures caused by poor working conditions. Despite repeated appeals, hospital management has failed to address their demands.

“This decision to go on strike was difficult, but the failure to resolve critical issues affecting our members, infrastructure, and the quality of healthcare delivery left us with no choice,” Dr. Olaogbe said. He added that the doctors could no longer work under conditions that jeopardize their well-being and compromise patient care.

The doctors are urging the state government to:

  • Resolve salary irregularities and discrepancies.
  • Implement the new minimum wage scale.
  • Ensure salary parity with other tertiary hospitals as mandated by the teaching hospital constitution.
  • Improve working conditions across the hospital’s three centers in the state.

The immediate past ARD President, Dr. John Matthew, highlighted a significant disparity between the salaries of doctors in Ondo State and those in neighboring states. “Many doctors have left for states offering better welfare packages. Illegal salary deductions, exorbitant taxes, and poor infrastructure, including the hospital being disconnected from the national grid, are worsening the situation,” Dr. Matthew said.

Meanwhile, the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Dr. Gbala Michael, has appealed to the striking doctors for more time to address their grievances.

The doctors expressed regret for the inconvenience the strike may cause to patients and the public but emphasized that their demands must be met to prevent further erosion of the healthcare system in the state.

Man Arrested for Shooting Friend Following Heated Argument in Abuja

The FCT Police Command has arrested 33-year-old Obinna Nwigwe for allegedly shooting his friend, Andrew Philemon, during a heated argument at Najob Guest House in Bwari. The incident occurred on December 26, 2024, and has raised concerns about violent crime in the region.

According to Police Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh, officers responded to a distress call about gunfire and arrived at the scene to find 29-year-old Philemon critically injured from a gunshot wound. Nwigwe, armed with a pump-action rifle, claimed the shooting was in self-defense after the argument escalated.

Nwigwe was promptly arrested at the scene. A subsequent search of his residence uncovered a shocking arsenal of weapons, including five Dane guns, one English-made single-barrel gun, an AK-47 magazine with 29 rounds of live ammunition, a taser, a bulletproof jacket, and various police uniforms and equipment.

Philemon is currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital in Abuja, while Nwigwe remains in police custody as investigations continue.

Femi Branch Criticizes Cinemas for Favoring One Movie Over Others

Actor Femi Branch has voiced his frustration over the growing trend of cinemas promoting one film at the expense of others. His concerns came to light during a meet-and-greet event for Toyin Abraham’s latest movie, Alakada: Bad and Bougie, where he observed some troubling practices.

In a video, Branch revealed that cinema staff often wear promotional T-shirts for a specific film, remove media cards for other movies from their counters, and replace them with those for the promoted film. He also alleged that staff members encourage patrons to watch certain movies, even suggesting they are better than the films the customers originally intended to see.

Branch stressed that cinemas should not be in the business of dictating what people choose to watch. He warned those engaging in such practices to cease, as it creates division within the industry. The actor called for a more level playing field for all producers, urging cinemas to maintain fairness and transparency in their promotional efforts.

This comes after Toyin Abraham, actress and producer, also spoke out about the challenges film owners face in cinemas. She highlighted how some fans expect gifts in exchange for watching her movie, further skewing the playing field for producers who are unable to afford such incentives.

Rooney Departs Plymouth After Only Seven Months as Manager

Wayne Rooney has resigned as Plymouth Argyle manager after just seven months in charge, with the club struggling at the bottom of the Championship. His departure follows a disappointing 2-0 loss to relegation rivals Oxford on Sunday, leaving Plymouth four points adrift of safety.

Under Rooney’s leadership, the team managed only four wins from 23 league games, suffering heavy defeats, including a 6-1 loss to Norwich and 4-0 drubbings by Bristol City and Coventry. Despite his efforts, the pressure mounted as Plymouth’s form failed to improve.

Rooney expressed his gratitude in a statement: "I would like to thank the board of Plymouth, the staff, the players, and the fans for their support during my time as head coach. The Green Army made Home Park special, and those memories will stay with me forever. Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to follow their progress."

The club issued a statement confirming the mutual agreement to part ways, thanking Rooney and his team for their efforts.

This marks another setback in Rooney’s managerial career. Last season, he was sacked by Birmingham after just 15 games, with the club eventually relegated. Prior to that, Rooney faced challenges at Derby, where he couldn’t prevent relegation despite battling severe points deductions due to financial issues. His managerial journey also included a stint with DC United in the U.S.

A Manchester United legend, Rooney remains the club’s all-time top scorer and had a stellar playing career, winning numerous trophies, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League. However, his managerial journey continues to face hurdles as he moves on from Plymouth.
