November 19, 2024 Wike Approves ₦70,000 Minimum Wage for FCT Workers

Wike Approves ₦70,000 Minimum Wage for FCT Workers

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved the immediate implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage for all FCT administration staff.

This announcement was made in a statement issued by Anthony Odeh, Press Secretary to the Head of the Civil Service of the FCT, on Tuesday.

The approval follows the signing of the Minimum Wage Bill into law by President Bola Tinubu in May 2024, which set the minimum wage at₦70,000 after extensive negotiations with organized labor.

The decision comes amid tensions, as the FCT chapters of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had threatened to join a nationwide strike on November 30, 2024. The unions cited the delayed implementation of the minimum wage in some states, including the FCT, and alleged that the Wike-led administration had not engaged with labor unions since his inauguration in August 2023.

To address these concerns, Wike approved the payment on Monday, November 18, 2024, along with three months of arrears for all FCT administration staff, effective from November 2024.

According to the Acting Head of Civil Service of the FCT, Mrs. Grace Adayilo, the move demonstrates the minister’s commitment to the welfare of workers and aims to “ameliorate the plight of employees under the FCT Administration.”

Adayilo also expressed confidence that this gesture would inspire the staff to continue supporting Wike in delivering on President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The statement emphasized that the decision underscores the minister’s dedication to improving the well-being and morale of FCT workers.

November 18, 2024 EPL: Tottenham’s Bentancur Receives Seven-Match Ban for Racist Comments

EPL: Tottenham’s Bentancur Receives Seven-Match Ban for Racist Comments

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been handed a seven-match ban and fined £100,000 following an independent regulatory commission's ruling on racist remarks made about teammate Son Heung-min.

The suspension, confirmed by the Football Association (FA), comes after comments Bentancur made during a pre-season interview, as reported by multiple outlets, including Football London. The punishment includes a ban from domestic fixtures and a hefty fine.

Bentancur, a vital figure under Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou, has been pivotal for the team this season, missing only one Premier League game due to a concussion. His absence due to the suspension now poses a significant challenge for Postecoglou, as Tottenham will be without their key midfielder for an extended period.

The FA’s statement on Monday outlined the decision: “An independent regulatory commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview. It was alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder breached FA Rule E3.1 by acting improperly, using abusive and/or insulting words, and bringing the game into disrepute.”

The suspension leaves Spurs needing to adjust their midfield dynamics as they aim to maintain their strong start to the Premier League season.

Sit-At-Home Enforcers Attack Anambra Communities, Leave Five Feared Dead

Communities in the Anambra Central Senatorial Zone were thrown into chaos on Monday morning as gunmen enforcing the outlawed sit-at-home order launched violent attacks, leaving at least five people feared dead.

The attacks, which occurred between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., targeted Abatete, Abagana, and Ukpo communities. According to sources, most of the casualties were members of the Anambra Vigilante Services.

The first attack reportedly took place in Abatete, where gunmen ambushed vigilante personnel attached to the town’s President-General (PG). Three security operatives were killed, while the PG sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Separate incidents unfolded in Abagana and Ukpo, with gunmen opening fire at the Ukpo roundabout in Dunukofia Local Government Area. A vigilante group member and a motorcycle rider were among the victims.

The attacks have left residents in the affected areas and surrounding communities, including the state capital, Awka, in a state of panic. A voice note circulating on social media warned residents in Awka to stay indoors due to the proximity of the violence.

"We are praying for the recovery of our PG. This senseless violence has left our community deeply shaken," said a member of the Abatete community.

Another resident of Ukpo shared on Facebook: "It was chaos. The attackers appeared suddenly, shooting indiscriminately and shouting, 'No Biafra, no freedom.' We are still trying to come to terms with what happened."

The police spokesperson in Anambra State, SP [Name], confirmed the incident, stating, "The details are still sketchy, but our operatives are currently on the ground. We will provide more information as soon as possible."

As investigations continue, the attacks have heightened fears among residents, underscoring the ongoing security challenges in the region.
