March 30, 2021 Sergio Aguero To Leave Man City At End Of The Season

Sergio Aguero To Leave Man City At End Of The Season

Record goalscorer Sergio Aguero will leave Manchester City at the end of the season, the club has announced.

The 32-year-old striker's contract expires at the end of the season and he has been told it will not be renewed.

The Argentine, who signed from Atletico Madrid in 2011, has scored 257 goals in 384 appearances for the club.

"With the guidance of the owners and the contributions of many players, we earned a place among the greatest of the world," Aguero said.

He will be honoured by a statue at Etihad Stadium, alongside title-winning captain Vincent Kompany and influential playmaker David Silva, who left the club in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

The trio played leading roles in City's renaissance, with Aguero famously scoring the injury-time winner against QPR in 2012 which clinched the club's first English title in 44 years.

Since then, the striker has helped City win three more Premier League titles, one FA Cup and five League Cups.

March 30, 2021 Ronaldo To Remain Portugal Captain Despite Outburst

Ronaldo To Remain Portugal Captain Despite Outburst

Cristiano Ronaldo is in no danger of losing the Portugal captaincy over his outburst at the end of Saturday's World Cup Qualifier against Serbia, coach Fernando Santos has said.

Ronaldo stormed off the pitch seconds before the final whistle and got booked for dissent after he was denied a stoppage-time goal in Saturday's 2-2 draw.

The 36-year-old was left fuming when his effort was cleared by Serbia defender Stefan Mitrovic after it had crossed the line.

With no Video Assistant Referee (VAR) or goal-line technology in place, Dutch referee Danny Makkelie waved play on and a livid Ronaldo threw away the captain's armband as he headed towards the tunnel.

"Yes, he will keep the armband. Forever," said Santos. "Cristiano (Ronaldo) is a national example.

"If he had offended the manager, his team-mates or the federation in a thoughtless attitude, then we would have to address the situation. But nothing like that happened.

"It was a moment of huge frustration. And we are talking about a player who is unbeatable when it comes to his eagerness to win.

"Nobody will say now that his reaction was beautiful, but there's no point to discuss if Cristiano should remain the captain. That's something I want to be very clear about."

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota's double had put the visitors in control at the break, but second-half goals from Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic and Filip Kostic saw Serbia - who had Nikola Milenkovic sent off in stoppage time - hit back.

UEFA has subsequently said Ronaldo's goal would have stood if both the governing bodies of Serbia and Portugal had agreed before the game to use goal-line technology.

Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino In Contention To Face Arsenal

Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino is in contention to face Arsenal at the weekend after returning to training.

The Brazil international, who remained on Merseyside with compatriots Alisson Becker and Fabinho after the South American World Cup qualifiers were postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions, has missed the last three matches with a knee problem.

However, the forward was pictured participating in a group session on Monday at the club's training complex.

Other senior players involved who are not currently on international duty included Trent Alexander-Arnold, dropped by England, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner, Naby Keita, Adrian, Nat Phillips and Ben Davies - who has still to make his first-team debut after signing from Preston in the winter transfer window.

Liverpool travel to face Arsenal - four points below their visitors in the Premier League table - on Saturday night.
