Nigerian Senate Dismisses CCT Chairman Danladi Umar

The Nigerian Senate has officially removed Danladi Umar, Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), from office following a two-thirds majority vote in favor of the resolution.

The motion for his removal was sponsored by Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, citing constitutional provisions under Section 157(1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

Bamidele outlined several allegations against Umar, stating, “The Senate has received numerous petitions and allegations of corruption and misconduct against the Chairman. This prompted the 9th Senate to invite him for a series of investigative hearings through the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions.”

Additional accusations included absenteeism from office for over a month without proper authorization or recusal, which further fueled concerns about his conduct. Bamidele also noted that these issues led President Bola Tinubu to nominate Abdullahi Usman Bello as Umar’s replacement.

During the plenary session, Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio presented the motion for a vote. Out of 109 Senators, 74 voted in favor of Umar's removal, while 10 opposed the motion.

The Senate subsequently passed a resolution to remove Umar from his position, and Akpabio directed the Clerk of the Senate to formally communicate the decision to the presidency in compliance with legal procedures.

The removal marks a significant step in addressing allegations of misconduct within the Nigerian judiciary system, with lawmakers reaffirming their commitment to upholding accountability and integrity.

Real Madrid’s Vinícius Jr. Uncovers Cameroonian Heritage Through DNA Test

Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior has uncovered ancestral ties to the Tikar tribe in Cameroon after undergoing a DNA test facilitated by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) in collaboration with AfricanAncestry.com.
The results were revealed during a ceremony on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at Fonte Nova Stadium, ahead of Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Uruguay. Vinícius received a certificate confirming his heritage, presented by the CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues, alongside his father, Vinícius José Paixão de Oliveira.
The initiative is part of the CBF’s Roots of Gold campaign, which celebrates the contributions and cultural pride of Afro-Brazilians in football and beyond.
Speaking at the event, Rodrigues highlighted the campaign’s mission, stating, “To celebrate Vini Jr. is to celebrate the success of all Brazilians. By discovering his roots, we reaffirm our commitment to inclusivity and acknowledge the invaluable role of Afro-Brazilian culture in shaping our national identity and football excellence.”
Gina Paige, founder and president of AfricanAncestry.com, emphasized the significance of reconnecting individuals of African descent to their origins.
“Vini Jr. embodies a deep desire to honour his heritage. However, like many descendants of Africans, his ancestral story has been obscured by racism and the scars of slavery. Through this DNA test, we traced his lineage to the Tikar tribe in Cameroon,” Paige explained. “This reconnection is not just a celebration but also an act of resistance, aligning with his advocacy for social justice on and off the field.”
Reacting to the discovery, Vinícius’ father expressed heartfelt joy. “It’s important to know where we come from. Many Brazilians are unaware of their ancestry. Knowing we’re connected to Cameroon is deeply meaningful.”
The moment Vinícius received his certificate was broadcast on the stadium’s giant screens, drawing applause from the audience. In a symbolic gesture, he wore a special jersey featuring the flags of Brazil and Cameroon during the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
This discovery underscores the importance of celebrating heritage and identity, inspiring a deeper connection between cultures and a shared history that transcends borders.

November 20, 2024 Oluremi Tinubu: Gender Equality is Essential for a Peaceful Society

Oluremi Tinubu: Gender Equality is Essential for a Peaceful Society

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for sustained efforts to achieve gender equality, emphasizing its importance in building a peaceful, equitable, and sustainable society.

Speaking at the 2024 Gender Conference on Tuesday at the University of Lagos, Tinubu underscored the need for justice, equity, and empowerment as cornerstones of societal advancement.

Gender equality is essential for achieving a peaceful and equitable society,” Tinubu affirmed during her keynote address. Represented by Mrs. Maryam Obadina, she highlighted the global importance of empowering women and girls, stating, “Women and girls represent half of the world’s population and potential. Empowering them is critical for productivity and economic growth.”

The First Lady also reflected on her personal experiences in politics, shedding light on the obstacles women face in leadership and decision-making.

“For 12 years, I worked in politics without the numbers to influence policies that directly impacted women. For example, I couldn’t effectively challenge harmful laws like child marriage, which severely affect young girls,” she shared.

Encouraging women to take initiative, Tinubu urged them to seize opportunities and not wait for them to be handed over. “Be bold, stay informed, and create your own opportunities. Hard work and faith go hand in hand,” she advised.

In a goodwill message, the First Lady of Oyo State, Tamunominini Makinde, echoed Tinubu’s sentiments, emphasizing that gender equality benefits everyone.

“Gender equality is not just about women. A man can be a nurse, and a woman can be a pilot or a lawyer. It’s about having the opportunity to pursue your dreams irrespective of gender,” Makinde said.

She further encouraged women entering male-dominated fields to prepare thoroughly, adding, “Ask yourself: How well do you know the field? Who has succeeded in it before you? What can you do better? These questions will help you build a solid foundation.”

The conference served as a platform for inspiring dialogue and reaffirmed the commitment to breaking barriers and creating opportunities for all, regardless of gender.
