Court Prohibits VIO from Stopping and Impounding Vehicles

Justice Evelyn Maha of the Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order preventing the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (commonly known as the Vehicle Inspection Office, VIO) from stopping, impounding, or confiscating vehicles. The court also barred the agency from imposing fines on motorists.

The judgment, delivered on October 2, followed a suit filed by human rights activist and attorney Abubakar Marshal, who challenged the legality of such actions by the VIO. Justice Maha agreed with the applicant’s argument that there is no legal basis for the VIO to carry out these activities, declaring them wrongful, oppressive, and unlawful.

In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1695/2023, Marshal sued several respondents, including the Directorate of Road Traffic Services and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. He sought a court declaration that the VIO's actions violated motorists' fundamental rights to fair hearing, freedom of movement, and presumption of innocence, citing sections of the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.

The court granted a restraining order against the respondents, prohibiting them and their agents from impounding vehicles or imposing fines. Additionally, a perpetual injunction was issued to safeguard Nigerians' rights to freedom of movement, presumption of innocence, and property ownership, ensuring that the VIO could no longer infringe on these rights without legal justification.

Solanke Gets First England Call-Up In Seven Years

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke has been called up to Lee Carsley’s England squad for this month’s Nations League matches against Greece and Finland. This marks Solanke’s first national team selection since his only cap in 2017, when he appeared as a substitute against Brazil during his time at Liverpool.

Despite his strong start to the season, Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers has not been included in the squad. Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, Tottenham’s James Maddison, and Crystal Palace winger Eberechi Eze are also absent.

Kyle Walker has earned a recall after being left out of Carsley’s first squad, while Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham returns following an injury that kept him out of the September fixtures. Carsley’s interim tenure began with two Nations League wins against Finland and the Republic of Ireland last month.

The Three Lions will host Greece at Wembley on October 10 before traveling to Helsinki to face Finland on October 13.

Solanke has impressed since joining Tottenham from Bournemouth in a £65m deal over the summer, scoring three goals in six games. Despite his 21 goals in 42 appearances for Bournemouth last season, Solanke was not selected for England’s Euro 2024 squad.

Maguire, who was a regular under former manager Gareth Southgate, has been left out after making Carsley’s squad in September. The defender missed Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham with a calf injury but has returned to the squad for their Europa League match against Porto.

Morgan Rogers, 22, had been considered for a call-up following his excellent start to the season, where he has started all eight of Aston Villa’s Premier League and Champions League games, scoring twice.

James Maddison, who has netted once in seven matches for Spurs, continues to be left out of the squad after being omitted from Southgate’s preliminary Euro 2024 selection.

England Squad:

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Newcastle United)
Defenders: Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), John Stones (Manchester City), Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Levi Colwill (Chelsea), Rico Lewis (Manchester City), Kyle Walker (Manchester City)
Midfielders: Conor Gallagher (Atletico Madrid), Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), Declan Rice (Arsenal), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest), Angel Gomes (Lille), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid)
Forwards: Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Noni Madueke (Chelsea), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa), Dominic Solanke (Tottenham)

Juventus Defender Bremer To Have Surgery After ACL Injury

Juventus center-back Gleison Bremer is set to undergo surgery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury during their Champions League match against RB Leipzig, the club announced on Thursday.

The 27-year-old Brazilian international was forced to leave the field just six minutes into Juve's 3-2 victory over Leipzig on Wednesday and was replaced by Federico Gatti. The team also faced another setback, with midfielder Nico Gonzalez sustaining a thigh muscle injury.

In a statement, the club revealed that diagnostic tests showed Bremer has an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his left knee, while Gonzalez has a low-grade injury to the rectus femoris of his right thigh. "Bremer will undergo surgery in the coming days," the statement added.

Since joining Juventus in 2022, Bremer has been a crucial part of the team's defense, having played every minute of the Serie A season so far, during which they have not conceded a goal in their six matches.
