Rivers LG Elections: Police Vow to Prevent Polls from Holding

The Rivers State Police Command has announced that it will not permit the local government election scheduled for Saturday to proceed. In a statement titled ‘Proposed October 5th, 2024 Local Government Chairman Election,’ the command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that the police had received a restraining order, barring them from providing security for the elections.

The command also acknowledged the September 30, 2024, judgment from the Federal High Court in Abuja, which prohibits the police from participating in the election. The statement added that the Force Legal Department has advised that the court ruling takes precedence over other considerations.

Additionally, the police statement mentioned a recent protest by the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), during which they demanded strict adherence to the court’s orders regarding the election.

October 4, 2024 Maresca: Chelsea Not Yet Ready to Compete for Premier League Title

Maresca: Chelsea Not Yet Ready to Compete for Premier League Title

Enzo Maresca has downplayed Chelsea’s chances of competing with Manchester City and Arsenal for the Premier League title, despite their strong start to the season. The Blues currently sit fourth in the table, leading the league in goals with 15, and have won four out of their six league games under Maresca’s guidance.

Cole Palmer has been one of the standout performers, scoring four first-half goals in a recent match against Brighton. Maresca also showcased Chelsea’s squad depth by fielding an entirely different starting XI in their 4-2 Europa League win over Gent on Thursday.

However, Maresca, who took over three months ago, insisted that Chelsea aren’t ready to challenge for the Premier League crown, pointing out that City and Arsenal’s long-term stability gives them an edge.

"I don’t think we’re ready to compete with City and Arsenal," he said. "They’ve been working with the same managers for years—City for nine, Arsenal for five. Competing at the top level takes time."

Chelsea will face Nottingham Forest on Sunday, aiming for their fourth consecutive league win. The atmosphere around the club has shifted significantly compared to Forest’s last visit to Stamford Bridge, when they won 1-0 during a difficult period for Chelsea.

While Chelsea have made significant investments in their squad over the last two years, the team appears to be finding its stride under Maresca. “Winning builds energy, trust, and confidence,” he said. “The results are helping, but more importantly, the players understand the purpose and identity we’re creating.”

Tinubu Launches Investigation into Niger Boat Accidents, Expresses Condolences to Victims

President Bola Tinubu has initiated an investigation into the recent series of boat accidents in Niger State, following a tragic incident on Tuesday night that resulted in the deaths of over 60 individuals, primarily women and children.

The accident involved a locally made wooden boat that, despite having a capacity for 100 passengers, was carrying around 300 people when it capsized in the rural Mokwa district, according to emergency officials.

In a statement released two days after the tragedy, President Tinubu expressed his condolences to the victims' families and the Niger State Government. He directed the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to investigate the ongoing boat accidents in Niger State and nationwide, aiming to implement measures to prevent further incidents.

“President Tinubu commiserates with the families of the victims and prays for the repose of the souls of the deceased,” stated Bayo Onanuga, the Presidential Spokesman.

The President has instructed NIWA to enhance its surveillance of inland waters to ensure public safety and to take action against boat operators who violate the ban on night sailing. He also thanked the emergency workers and local divers for their efforts in locating those still missing.

Rudiger: Saliba’s Move to Real Madrid Would Be Fantastic

Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger has praised Arsenal’s William Saliba, suggesting he would be an excellent addition to the Spanish club. In an interview with InsideScoopHQ, shared by renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Rudiger highlighted the need for squad rotation at Real Madrid due to their demanding schedule, which includes numerous fixtures.

When asked which defender he would like to see join the 15-time Champions League winners, Rudiger said, “I say William Saliba. I am very happy with Militao! But there are so many games, so we would rotate. Having Saliba would be great.” He emphasized that both Saliba and his defensive partner Gabriel are key to Arsenal’s success, calling them the "pillar of transformation" for the team.

Describing Saliba as a “silent leader,” Rudiger remarked, “If you see Arsenal, the two centre backs are the pillar of the transformation. You have Gabriel as the aggressive leader, and Saliba… this brother plays clean! You have to give it to him; he looks like a silent leader.”

Rudiger, known for his versatility and aggressive tackling style, was recently named among the top 30 nominees for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, alongside Saliba. When asked about the best player he has ever shared a dressing room with, he named 2022 Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema. “Karim Benzema! I could mention Modric, Kroos, or Hazard, but I have to go with Karim.”

As for his top three centre-backs in world football, Rudiger included Saliba, Van Dijk, and Gabriel, saying, “I won’t rank them, but those are my picks.”
