Nnamdi Kanu Petitions CJN Against Abuja Chief Judge Over Case Transfer

The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has petitioned the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, requesting that his case be reassigned to another judge with proper jurisdiction.

In a letter to the CJN, Kanu’s legal team, led by Aloy Ejimakor, argued that Justice Binta Nyako, who is currently handling the case, had previously recused herself due to allegations of bias raised by Kanu.

Kanu is facing seven terrorism-related charges brought against him by the Federal Government. Ejimakor emphasized that legal principles dictate that once a judge recuses themselves, they are disqualified from further involvement in the case.

He urged the CJN to intervene administratively to ensure a reassignment, stating, “Once a judge voluntarily recuses themselves, they are legally disqualified from further proceedings. A decision or order of recusal is akin to a ruling on jurisdiction and cannot be reversed arbitrarily.”

Ejimakor also warned that allowing a judge who had previously recused themselves to resume the case could damage public trust in the judiciary. “Judicial integrity is crucial. If a judge unilaterally resumes a case after recusal, it creates a perception of partiality and undermines confidence in the judicial process,” he stated.

He further revealed that Kanu had filed a formal complaint against Justice Nyako with the National Judicial Council (NJC) on January 14, 2025, and that the petition was still pending.

Ejimakor called on the CJN to use her authority to ensure a fair trial, either by transferring the case to another judge in Abuja or moving it to a court in the South-East.

February 27, 2025 FG to Review Electricity Tariff for Band B and C Customers

FG to Review Electricity Tariff for Band B and C Customers

The Federal Government has announced plans to review electricity tariffs to address pricing disparities and encourage investment in the power sector.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed this during the public presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy and Nigeria Integrated Resource Plan on Thursday in Abuja. He noted that the slow migration to Band A is due to the reluctance of Distribution Companies (DisCos) to invest in necessary infrastructure.

Under the current tariff structure, Band B customers, who receive 17-18 hours of electricity, pay ₦63 per kilowatt-hour, while Band A customers, receiving just two extra hours, pay ₦209 per kilowatt-hour. Adelabu described this price gap as unfair and emphasized the need for a more balanced and equitable pricing system.

To address this, the government is considering restructuring tariff bands to reduce the wide gap between them, encourage faster migration of lower-band customers to Band A, and ensure more investment in upgrading dilapidated infrastructure.

“The gap between the Band A tariffs and Bands B, C, D, and E is too wide,” Adelabu said. “We believe it’s not fair. It is not just, and we must carry out some level of regularisation.”

He clarified that while a tariff review is being considered, it does not necessarily mean an immediate increase in rates.

Obasa Makes Entry Into Lagos Assembly

Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, made a dramatic entry into the assembly complex on Thursday.

Obasa, accompanied by security officials, reportedly entered the Speaker’s Office around 12 noon, just hours after security aides assigned to the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, were withdrawn.

Confirming the incident, Meranda’s Chief Press Secretary, Segun Ajiboye, accused Obasa and his team of forcefully entering the office.

A source from Obasa’s camp also confirmed their presence at the assembly, stating, “We’re at the assembly now.”

The development adds a new twist to the ongoing leadership crisis within the Lagos State House of Assembly.

EFCC Raises Alarm Over Foreign Fraud Syndicates Expanding in Nigeria

Ola Olukoyede, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has warned that organized foreign fraud syndicates are setting up operations in Nigerian cities and recruiting young people into sophisticated cybercrimes, including cryptocurrency fraud.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja, following Olukoyede’s address to participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC) 18 from the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS). The delegation, led by the institute’s Director of Studies, Hyginus Ngele, visited the EFCC headquarters on Wednesday.

Olukoyede expressed concern over how criminal groups, including insurgents and bandits, have managed to sustain their operations in Nigeria for years. He highlighted the unchecked movement of small arms across borders and the illegal exploitation of mineral resources by non-state actors, emphasizing how these issues contribute to national security threats.

“A recently uncovered trend that deserves urgent attention is the presence of foreign fraud syndicates setting up cells in Nigerian cities," Olukoyede revealed. "These groups are actively recruiting young Nigerians into complex cybercrimes, including cryptocurrency fraud.”

He further stated that intelligence gathered by the EFCC suggests these syndicates may be using cryptocurrency to facilitate illegal arms imports into the country.

In a recent special operation in Lagos, the EFCC arrested 194 foreigners in a single building in Victoria Island. The suspects included Chinese, Filipinos, Eastern Europeans, and Tunisians, many of whom lacked valid visas and conducted financial transactions exclusively through cryptocurrency.

Olukoyede also revealed that investigations showed some of the arrested individuals were ex-convicts who had fled their home countries to seek refuge in Africa. “These groups are not only expanding within Nigeria but are also forming cells in other African countries,” he noted.

The EFCC chairman called for stronger national and continental efforts to tackle internet fraud, emphasizing the urgent need for collaboration among security, intelligence, and law enforcement agencies in Africa.

Speaking on behalf of NISS, Commandant Joseph Odama, through Ngele, commended Olukoyede’s leadership, praising the EFCC for its strides in fighting corruption, money laundering, and financial crimes.

He highlighted the agency’s role in uncovering how certain NGOs and other entities channel funds to support criminal activities, destabilizing both Nigeria and the African continent. He urged greater cooperation between Nigeria and other African nations to strengthen legal frameworks and promote transparency in combating organized crime.
