Libyan Authorities Bows to Pressure, Super Eagles to Return to Nigeria

The Super Eagles, Nigeria's national football team, are set to return home after being stranded in Libya for over 15 hours. Following pressure from external bodies, the Libyan authorities agreed to refuel the team's chartered jet and clear their airspace.

The players and officials were abandoned at Al Abraq International Airport without access to food, water, or internet. However, sports journalist Adepoju Tobi Samuel, also known as OgaNlaMedia, confirmed that the team is now en route to Nigeria.

He shared on X: "After pressure from several quarters, the Libyan government has cleared the ValueJet flight for takeoff and sold aviation fuel to the airline." The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) insisted the flight take the team directly back to Nigeria, avoiding a landing in Benghazi.

‘I’ve Escalated the Issue,’ Minister Addresses Super Eagles’ Libya Ordeal

Sports Minister John Enoh has escalated the Super Eagles' ordeal in Libya to all relevant authorities after the team was stranded for over 12 hours at Al Abaq Airport. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) reported on Monday that the team, which had arrived for their 2025 AFCON qualifier, was left unattended with no food or accommodation, and was kept in poor conditions.

Originally headed for Benghazi, the team's flight was diverted to Al Abaq, far from their intended destination. Due to the situation, the Super Eagles will no longer participate in the scheduled match against Libya.

Minister Enoh condemned the "disgraceful" treatment, describing it as an "almost hostage situation" and stated that the team's safety is the top priority. He has been in contact with the Foreign Affairs Minister, National Security Adviser, CAF officials, and other key figures to resolve the issue. He also called for formal complaints to be made to CAF and urged serious consequences for the Libyan Football Federation for their actions.

Enoh emphasized that the team's safety must be secured before any further discussions on the match can continue.

Four Bloggers Re-Arraigned for Cyberstalking GTCO CEO

The police have re-arraigned four bloggers, Precious Eze, Olawale Rotimi, Rowland Olonishuwa, and Seun Odunlami, on new charges at the Federal High Court in Lagos. The bloggers are accused of cyberstalking and spreading false information against Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) through various social media platforms.

The defendants face a 10-count charge, including conspiracy, cyberstalking, publishing false and misleading information, extortion, threats, and causing a decline in GTCO’s shares and market value. They were previously arraigned on September 27, 2024, on charges of cyberstalking and false publications aimed at insulting GTCO’s CEO, Segun Agbaje.

After their pleas, Justice Ayokunle Faji ordered their remand at the Correctional Center. The new charges allege that the bloggers knowingly spread false and misleading claims about GTCO, its management, the Central Bank of Nigeria, and the wider banking system, intending to cause disorder and extort the company by damaging its reputation.
