Lagos Lawmakers Appear in Court Over Obasa’s Removal Case

Twenty-nine lawmakers loyal to Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, arrived at the Lagos State High Court on Friday for the hearing of a lawsuit filed by Agege lawmaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

Obasa had challenged his removal in court after 36 of his colleagues voted him out on January 13, 2025.

In his application, dated February 12, 2025, and filed by his lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), Obasa argued that his removal was unconstitutional, claiming it happened while he was out of the country.

February 28, 2025 Okocha Slams Carragher Over AFCON Remarks

Okocha Slams Carragher Over AFCON Remarks

Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha has slammed former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher over his comments on the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), suggesting that Carragher does not respect African football.

Speaking in an interview circulating on X, Okocha dismissed Carragher’s opinions, saying, “There are some players that will say something, you just overlook it. If you look at their career, if you look at the type of football that they played, you can understand. I mean, you wouldn’t want your son to be like Carragher. So, he can never appreciate African football or the talents that come from Africa.”

His comments come amid backlash against Carragher, who questioned AFCON’s significance during a Sky Sports post-match discussion on February 23. The conversation, which featured Micah Richards, Daniel Sturridge, and Roy Keane, revolved around Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the 2025 Ballon d’Or. Carragher suggested that Salah’s lack of “major tournament” victories could hurt his chances, despite the Egyptian star finishing as an AFCON runner-up in 2017 and 2021.

Richards and Sturridge immediately challenged Carragher’s remarks, reminding him of AFCON’s importance. The comments sparked widespread criticism, with many accusing Carragher of disrespecting Africa’s premier football competition.

Among those who reacted was former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel, who strongly condemned Carragher on his Obi One Podcast. Mikel described Carragher’s comments as “disrespectful” and said, “The Africa Cup of Nations is as big [as the Euros]. I’ve played in it and won it. It’s not in his f***ing place to discredit AFCON. He sits there week in, week out, teaching and coaching people on how to win the Premier League, and he never won it!”

Mikel, who won the 2013 AFCON title with Nigeria, stressed the tournament’s significance in inspiring young African footballers. “Kids grow up watching their idols give everything for their country,” he said. “The future generation of African players coming to the Premier League and Europe to play is because they grew up watching the African Cup of Nations.”

The former Chelsea midfielder, a decorated player during his career, also won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, the UEFA Champions League in 2012, and the UEFA Europa League twice.

Supreme Court to Rule on Appeals Over Defection of 27 Rivers Lawmakers

The Supreme Court is set to deliver its judgment on five appeals related to the ongoing crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly.

After hearing the cases concerning the defection of 27 lawmakers, the apex court reserved its ruling, with the judgment date to be communicated to the parties involved.

One of the key issues in the appeals is Governor Siminalayi Fubara's challenge to the legality of Martin Amaewhule as Speaker of the Assembly, arguing that Amaewhule and 26 other lawmakers lost their positions after allegedly defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

At the last hearing, a panel led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji dismissed an appeal by Governor Fubara, which challenged the re-presentation of the 2024 state budget before the Assembly under Amaewhule’s leadership. The dismissal followed a request by Fubara’s lawyer, Yusuf Ali, who withdrew the suit, stating that it had become irrelevant.

FCCPC Directs MultiChoice to Halt Price Increase Pending Investigation

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has directed MultiChoice Nigeria, the operator of DStv and GOtv, to suspend its planned subscription price increase until an ongoing investigation into the proposed adjustment is concluded.

The directive was issued in a statement on Thursday by the FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu.

MultiChoice had earlier been summoned to appear before the commission on February 27 for an investigative hearing regarding concerns over its repeated price hikes. However, after the company requested an extension, the hearing was rescheduled for March 6, 2025. The commission has mandated that MultiChoice’s CEO and other relevant officers attend the session with a detailed response to the inquiry.

“As part of this directive, MultiChoice is expressly instructed to maintain the existing price structure as of February 27, 2025, pending the commission’s review and final determination on the matter,” the statement read.

The FCCPC emphasised that freezing the prices is necessary to prevent potential consumer exploitation during the investigation.

Earlier in the week, MultiChoice had informed its customers of an impending price adjustment, citing the need to sustain its content offerings. According to the proposed changes, the DStv Compact package was set for an increase, while the Compact Plus and Premium bouquets would remain at N30,000 and N44,500, respectively.

The commission assured the public that updates on the investigation would be provided as it progresses.
