Flooding: FG Urges Nigerians to Relocate from Riverbanks

The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), has issued a warning to Nigerians living along riverbanks in the River Benue Basin to relocate to safer areas immediately. In a statement released on Thursday, NIHSA Director General Umar Mohammed cautioned that rising water levels on the River Benue, due to increased rainfall, have reached dangerous flooding levels.

Residents near the River Niger were also advised to evacuate as the management of the Kainji and Jebba Dams are working to manage the floodwaters. Mohammed urged Nigerians to cooperate with emergency management agencies and contribute to building resilience against future floods to minimize their impact.

This warning follows the recent release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, which caused severe flooding, claiming over 30 lives and destroying thousands of homes in Maiduguri, Borno State.

In 2022, flooding devastated many Nigerian states, leading to 665 deaths, displacing over 2.4 million people, and affecting more than 4.4 million. In 2023, 159,157 people were impacted by floods, 28 lives were lost, and 48,168 were displaced, with water released from the Lagdo Dam contributing to some of the incidents.

As of 2024, flooding has affected 1,048,312 individuals, displaced 625,239, and claimed 259 lives between April and September, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The government continues to urge Nigerians to heed these warnings to prevent further loss of life and property.

Nigeria Set To Miss Out On Omorodion

Nigeria is poised to lose Samuel Omorodion to Spain, as the striker is likely to receive his first senior call-up for the UEFA Nations League matches in November.

Spain has been facing challenges in finding a prolific striker, but there is optimism that this issue may soon be resolved. Álvaro Morata's time as the primary center forward is winding down, and Omorodion, who has been in exceptional form this season, is seen as a natural successor.

Since transferring from Atlético Madrid to Porto, Omorodion has scored 11 goals, including four during Spain U21's recent victory over Malta. He narrowly missed inclusion in La Roja's squad for the current international break but is expected to be called up for the senior team in November, according to reports from MD.

Spain will compete against Denmark and Switzerland in their last two UEFA Nations League fixtures, needing just two draws to secure progression. This lack of immediate pressure may allow coach Luis de la Fuente to explore different options, making Omorodion an appealing choice for next month.

Notably, Omorodion was part of the Spain squad that clinched the football gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Bobrisky Responds to Falana and Falz: ‘Hold VeryDarkMan Accountable’

Popular crossdresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, has responded to human rights activist and lawyer Femi Falana and his son, Folarin, commonly referred to as Falz, by demanding that they hold controversial media critic Martin Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, accountable for the defamatory content circulating on social media.

Bobrisky emphasized that he never provided any money to Falana or his son for assistance in securing a presidential pardon during his time in prison. This statement follows Falana and Falz's request for a public apology and retraction concerning allegations made by Bobrisky in various audio recordings.

In one of the audios shared by VeryDarkMan, Bobrisky claimed to have contacted Falz for help in convincing his father (Falana) to facilitate a presidential pardon that was supposedly worth N10 million. He also mentioned asking Falz for N3 million to ensure special treatment at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre.

Another audio clip from VeryDarkMan featured Bobrisky alleging that he had paid N5 million upfront to a Senior Advocate of Nigeria to secure a Federal Government pardon for charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a letter dated October 14, 2024, from Falana’s legal representatives, Olorunfemi Akinyemi and Taiwo E. Olawanle, Bobrisky was accused of making false and damaging statements regarding Falana and Falz's involvement in alleged bribery and the presidential pardon. The legal team labeled Bobrisky’s claims as baseless and detrimental to Falana’s reputation, demanding a full retraction and an apology published across all platforms where the statements were made.

In his response, Bobrisky insisted that he never gave any money to Falana or Falz for a presidential pardon and argued that the individual responsible for disseminating the defamatory content should be held accountable.

“I, Okuneye Idris, also known as Bobrisky, did not give Falz or his dad any money for pardon. No money was exchanged. I have stated this before and will reiterate it. The person who published the audio online should take full responsibility for what he posted publicly,” Bobrisky wrote in an Instagram story on Wednesday.

In a subsequent post, he added, “In reply to the two letters circulating from the law firm of the Falanas, I want to clarify that I, Okuneye Idris Olarewaju, also known as Bobrisky, did not publish any defamatory statements regarding the learned SAN and his son, Falz. I deny any knowledge of what VDM published. I urge that anyone who feels defamed should hold the publisher of the defamatory content accountable, and I expect my fundamental right to privacy regarding my communications to be respected and protected.”
