Ailing Pope Francis Faces Breathing Crisis, Vatican Reports

Pope Francis, who has been hospitalized with pneumonia, suffered a breathing crisis on Friday that caused him to vomit, but he responded well after receiving air, the Vatican reported. The incident occurred just hours after a Vatican source indicated that the 88-year-old pontiff’s condition was no longer considered critical, following gradual improvements.

While being treated at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, Francis experienced a bronchospasm episode that led to sudden respiratory distress. He was promptly given broncho-aspiration and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, which helped stabilize his condition. Despite the episode, he remained alert and cooperative throughout, according to the Vatican.

Doctors are closely monitoring the situation over the next 24 to 48 hours to assess whether the breathing trouble has worsened his overall health. Although not out of danger, the pontiff is reportedly in good spirits and using an oxygen mask covering his nose and mouth. A Vatican source noted that he has shown resilience compared to what might have been expected given his condition.

Pope Francis was first hospitalized on February 14 after experiencing breathing difficulties, which later developed into pneumonia in both lungs. Concerns grew after he suffered a respiratory attack over the weekend, but since then, his condition had appeared to improve. Despite this, the Vatican has maintained a “reserved” prognosis, meaning no predictions are being made about his recovery.

At 88, Francis’s age and preexisting chronic respiratory issues make a full recovery uncertain. He had part of one lung removed in his youth and has struggled with increasing health challenges in recent years. In addition to being prone to bronchitis, he also suffers from hip and knee pain, which has forced him to rely on a wheelchair.

Despite his hospitalization, the pope has continued working from his hospital suite on the 10th floor of Gemelli. He has been alternating between rest, breathing exercises, and prayer. This marks the longest hospital stay of his nearly 12-year papacy, following previous surgeries for a hernia, colon issues, and bronchitis treatment.

Speculation has arisen about whether Francis might consider stepping down, particularly with his schedule packed due to preparations for the upcoming Jubilee year. Vatican expert Marco Politi suggested that if the pope recovers, he may aim to complete the Jubilee celebrations but could revisit the question of resignation once he turns 89.

Francis has previously expressed openness to resigning, following the precedent set by his predecessor, Benedict XVI, who stepped down in 2013 due to health concerns. However, before his hospitalization, Francis had repeatedly stated that he did not see resignation as an immediate option—and perhaps never would.

Supreme Court Has Restored Justice in Rivers – Wike

The Supreme Court’s ruling on the ongoing crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly has put an end to impunity in the state, according to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Delivering its judgment on Friday, the apex court barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other relevant agencies from releasing funds to the Rivers State Government until it complies with court orders, which the court described as being flagrantly disobeyed.

A five-man panel of the Supreme Court also unanimously dismissed a cross-appeal filed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, which challenged the legitimacy of the House of Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule as Speaker. In addition, the court nullified the recently conducted local government elections in Rivers, ruling that they grossly violated the Electoral Act.

Reacting to the judgment, Wike addressed reporters and commended the judiciary for upholding the rule of law.

“If you allow this, one day, a single member will claim to be an assembly, and there will be nothing anyone can do. It is unheard of. We must commend the judiciary for boldly stating that this level of impunity must not be allowed,” he said.

He also criticized the conduct of the local government elections, emphasizing that they did not adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act.

“You failed to follow the Electoral Act in conducting the local government elections, yet people were cheering him (Governor Fubara), saying he had done well,” Wike added.

The former Rivers State Governor also took a swipe at the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, for backing Fubara. He insisted that the Rivers Governor had no choice but to comply fully with the Supreme Court’s verdict, as it represents the final legal authority on the matter.

“I hope they will also hail him today. I hope the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum will also applaud him today. The Supreme Court has made it clear—enough is enough. We must not allow our democracy to be undermined,” Wike stated.

He noted that after over 15 months of crisis, the highest court in the land has now settled the issue. “The only appeal left is to God,” he remarked.

“People keep saying ‘Wike, Wike.’ This is not about me. How can a governor demolish the state assembly complex and relocate his faction to a private residence? It is unheard of. For me, this ruling is a victory for Nigerians and the people of Rivers State. The impunity must end. We cannot allow anyone to destroy the nation’s democracy,” he asserted.

Wike further emphasized that winning a legal battle is not about hiring numerous Senior Advocates of Nigeria but about upholding the rule of law and entrusting competent hands to handle cases.

Natasha Accuses Akpabio of Sexual Harassment, Senate President Refutes Allegation

The Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment, claiming he deliberately blocked her motions in the Senate after she rejected his advances.

Akpabio, through his media consultant Kenny Okulogbo, has denied the allegations, dismissing them as false and politically motivated.

In an interview with Arise Television on Friday, Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that the Senate President subjected her to persistent harassment after she refused his propositions. She recounted an incident on December 8, 2023, at Akpabio’s residence in Ikot-Ekpene, where he allegedly made inappropriate remarks while showing her around his home.

She stated, “He held my hand and said he wanted to show me around. My husband was there, but at some point, Akpabio quickened his pace while still holding my hand. He asked if I liked his house, and when I said yes, he told me, ‘Now that you are a Senator, you should make time for us to spend quality time here—you’ll enjoy it.’”

According to her, Akpabio later insinuated that she could receive favors in the Senate if she "made him happy." She likened her experience to a student being punished by a lecturer for refusing to comply with inappropriate demands.

Responding to the accusations, Okulogbo dismissed them as baseless, attributing her claims to her recent removal as Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Local Content.

“She is simply upset about losing her position. Everything she said is a complete lie,” Okulogbo stated, adding that an official response from the Senate President would be issued soon.

Assembly Crisis: Supreme Court Halts CBN, Accountant General from Disbursing Funds to Rivers Government

The Supreme Court has restrained the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other agencies from releasing funds to the Rivers State government until it complies with court directives.

In a one-hour, thirty-six-minute judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, a five-man panel of the court unanimously dismissed Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s cross-appeal challenging the legitimacy of the Rivers State House of Assembly under Speaker Martin Amaewhule.

The court ruled that Amaewhule must immediately resume sitting with the duly elected lawmakers, rejecting Fubara’s attempt to govern with a four-member House of Assembly. It held that the governor’s actions deprived 28 constituencies of proper representation and violated an earlier court order requiring him to present the 2024 budget to a legally constituted Assembly under Amaewhule’s leadership.

Furthermore, the court described Fubara’s handling of the alleged defection of 28 lawmakers as an act of “brigandage and dictatorship,” aimed at obstructing the Assembly from carrying out its constitutional duties.
