Very Dark Man Pledges to Investigate Mercy Chinwo and Ex-Manager’s Dispute

Activist Vincent Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has pledged to investigate allegations of fraud, forgery, and music royalty theft leveled against gospel music executive Ezekiel Thankgod, also known as Eezee Tee.

VDM’s decision to look into the matter comes amid growing controversy surrounding the record label boss, who has faced multiple accusations from former signees, including claims of contract forgery, manipulation, rights theft, and financial mismanagement.

In a statement, VDM admitted he initially had no interest in the issue but felt compelled to take action after analyzing the situation.

“I will go find what I need to find,” he declared, adding, “I have seen the claims and counterclaims, and I want to know what really happened.”

The activist also raised concerns over alleged attempts to control the narrative by paying bloggers to influence public opinion.

Expressing skepticism about certain media reports, he vowed to carry out an independent investigation.

“I will analyze the full video. Some people may not be happy about it, but it is what it is,” he stated.

February 3, 2025 Beyoncé Wins Album of the Year for Cowboy Carter

Beyoncé Wins Album of the Year for Cowboy Carter

Beyoncé won her first-ever Album of the Year Grammy on Sunday, securing the prestigious award for her groundbreaking country album, Cowboy Carter.

The 43-year-old music icon triumphed over stiff competition, including Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish, to claim the night’s top honor. The win marks a long-awaited moment of recognition for Beyoncé, the most nominated and decorated artist in Recording Academy history, who had previously been overlooked for the award.

“It’s been many, many years,” Beyoncé said while accepting the prize, dedicating it to Linda Martell, a pioneering Black woman in country music who also performed on the album. “I hope we just keep pushing forward, opening doors.”

This was the fifth time one of her albums had been nominated for Album of the Year, with previous losses to Taylor Swift, Beck, Adele, and Harry Styles. Beyoncé is also the first Black woman in the 21st century to win the award, and only the fourth overall, following Lauryn Hill in 1999, Natalie Cole, and Whitney Houston.

Cowboy Carter is a genre-blending, historically rooted country album that honors Beyoncé’s Southern heritage. As the second act in her Renaissance trilogy, the 27-track record amplifies the conversation about Black artists' long-standing influence in country music and the racism they continue to face in the genre.

Beyoncé entered the night with 11 nominations, leading the field in multiple categories, including pop, country, Americana, and melodic rap performance. By the end of the ceremony, she had taken home three awards—Album of the Year, Best Country Album, and Best Country Duo/Group Performance with Miley Cyrus.

Federal Government Predicts Electricity Tariff Hike in Coming Months

The Federal Government has announced that Nigerians should prepare for an increase in electricity tariffs in the coming months. President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Energy, Olu Verheijen, revealed this in an interview in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, as reported by Bloomberg.

Verheijen was attending a World Bank-backed conference where Nigeria presented a $32 billion plan to enhance electricity connections by 2030. Private investors are expected to contribute $15.5 billion, with the remainder coming from public sources, including the World Bank and African Development Bank.

According to Verheijen, Nigeria’s electricity tariffs need to rise by about two-thirds for many consumers to reflect the actual cost of supply. She emphasized that higher tariffs, balanced by subsidies for low-income consumers, are necessary to fund critical maintenance, improve reliability, and attract private investments in power generation and transmission.

“One of the key challenges we’re addressing over the next few months is transitioning to a cost-efficient yet cost-reflective tariff,” Verheijen stated. “This is essential to generate the revenue required to attract private capital while also protecting the poor and vulnerable.”

The push for higher tariffs comes as Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies, burdened by debt, demand cost-reflective pricing to improve their financial health. Although Nigeria privatized its power generation and distribution in 2013, prices set by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission remain below suppliers’ costs. Government subsidies cover part of the gap, but achieving profitability remains difficult.

Verheijen noted that Nigeria’s power sector requires significant investment to meet its development targets. Of the country’s 14-gigawatt installed capacity, only 8 gigawatts can be transmitted, and just four to five gigawatts are delivered directly to homes and businesses.

Siemens AG is collaborating with the government on a $2.3 billion initiative to enhance transmission and distribution networks. Additionally, over 7 million Nigerians in rural areas now have access to electricity through decentralized renewable energy projects.

“Energy policies must align with a country’s development goals,” Verheijen remarked. “Nigeria aims to become a $1 trillion economy within five years and transition to an upper-middle-income nation in 25 years.”

Currently, Nigeria’s gross domestic product stands at just under $200 billion, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Several Feared Dead in Suspected Herdsmen Attack on Ebonyi Community

On Sunday, suspected herdsmen launched an attack on the Amegu Nkalaha Community in the Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, resulting in multiple fatalities and widespread destruction. Numerous houses were set ablaze, leaving residents in distress.

The Ebonyi State Police Command spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident, stating that law enforcement operatives have been deployed to the affected area. However, the exact number of casualties is still under investigation.

“Yes, an attack occurred, and police are actively responding to the situation. The command is working to ascertain the precise number of people killed,” Ukandu said.

The Chairperson of Ishielu Local Government Area, Ifeoma Agwu, also confirmed the attack, adding that authorities are in the process of recovering bodies and transporting them to the morgue. She emphasized that determining the exact number of fatalities remains challenging at this stage.

“We are currently taking victims’ bodies to the mortuary. I cannot provide more details at this moment, but further information will be made available soon,” Agwu stated.

While the motive behind the attack is still being investigated, some community members believe it may be linked to the recent killing of cattle belonging to herdsmen in the area.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, claimed that the cows were allegedly killed by members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in a nearby forest. The source added that tensions have been rising in the community since the incident, with local stakeholders working to prevent possible retaliatory violence.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, urging residents to remain calm while investigations are ongoing.
