Nigerian Army Renames Ikeja Cantonment in Honour of Taoreed Lagbaja

The Nigerian Army has officially renamed the Ikeja Cantonment after the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Taoreed Lagbaja, in recognition of his outstanding service and contributions to the military.

Speaking at the renaming ceremony, officials highlighted Lagbaja’s over three decades of dedicated service, particularly in counterinsurgency, internal security, and peacekeeping operations. The initiative, they noted, underscores the importance of honouring national heroes and reassuring patriots that their sacrifices will always be remembered.

Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, also paid tribute to his predecessor, praising his remarkable infrastructural contributions while serving as Commander of the 9 Brigade. He emphasized that naming the cantonment after Lagbaja was a fitting way to immortalize his legacy.

Lagbaja served as Chief of Army Staff from June 19, 2023, until his passing on November 5, 2024, at the age of 56, following an illness. Appointed by President Bola Tinubu as the successor to Lieutenant-General Faruk Yahaya, he left behind a legacy of professionalism, dedication, and sacrifice during his 17-month tenure.

I Won’t Marry Without ₦500 Million in My Account – Spyro

Singer Spyro has declared that he will not consider marriage until he has at least ₦500 million in his bank account.

In a post on Instagram, he reflected on his difficult childhood and his determination to create a secure financial future for himself and his future family. He emphasized the importance of breaking the cycle of poverty, urging his followers to focus on long-term stability rather than fleeting pleasures.

Spyro expressed concern that many in his generation prioritize superficial pursuits over meaningful personal growth, describing this attitude as aimless and wasteful. He shared that, as a child, he was not privileged to own toys and faced numerous hardships.

Beyond financial stability, the singer stressed that proper upbringing is equally crucial. He believes that parents must not only provide for their children but also instill strong moral values and a sense of responsibility.

Blaming poor parenting for many societal issues, Spyro wrote:
"Train up a child (male or female) in the way they should go, and when they grow, they will not depart from it. Many of us should be focused on ending the cycle of poverty so our children won’t be victims too, but unfortunately, my generation is busy gallivanting and indulging in frivolities."

He recalled a conversation about his childhood struggles, stating:
"I was never fortunate enough to have toys as a kid; my childhood wasn’t the easiest. But from a very young age, I promised myself that my kids would never go through what I did. That’s why I work tirelessly. In fact, I will never marry without having ₦500 million in my account. I fought, cried, and prayed, and today, I can afford to give my kids the life they deserve so they don’t become prey, as I almost did. This should be our focus, not criticism."

Spyro further emphasized the need for spiritual and moral guidance, stating that financial success alone is not enough. He believes that instilling the fear of God in children is essential, as it helps regulate human behavior and prevents moral decay.

"The spirit of God in a man is what keeps him level-headed. Didn’t the Bible say the heart of man is desperately wicked? Only God over man keeps him sane."

March 1, 2025 Akpabio’s Wife Sues Natasha for Defamation, Seeks ₦250 Billion in Damages

Akpabio’s Wife Sues Natasha for Defamation, Seeks ₦250 Billion in Damages

Unoma Akpabio, wife of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has filed two lawsuits against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, accusing her of defamation and violation of fundamental human rights.

The legal battle stems from Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recent claims that her issues in the Senate began after she refused alleged sexual advances from the Senate President. In the first lawsuit (Suit No: CV/814/25), which focuses on fundamental human rights violations, Mrs. Akpabio alleged that the senator’s statements caused emotional trauma for her and her children, leaving them in fear for their lives. She urged the court to declare the remarks a violation of her right to dignity under the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Additionally, she is demanding ₦250 billion in damages and a perpetual injunction preventing Akpoti-Uduaghan from making further allegations.

In a separate defamation lawsuit (Suit No: CV/816/25), Mrs. Akpabio refuted the senator’s claims, describing them as false, malicious, and damaging to her family’s reputation. She asked the court to compel Akpoti-Uduaghan to issue a public apology in The Guardian and ThisDay newspapers and pay ₦1 billion in damages.

“These allegations have caused untold pain and emotional trauma to me and my family,” Mrs. Akpabio stated in her suit.

A court date for the hearings has yet to be set.

The dispute between the lawmakers began after Akpoti-Uduaghan discovered her Senate chamber seat had been reassigned without her prior knowledge. She protested the change, briefly disrupting a plenary session. In response, the Senate referred the matter to its Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, led by Senator Neda Imaseun from Edo South, with a two-week deadline to investigate and submit a report.

Amid the ongoing controversy, Akpoti-Uduaghan filed a ₦100 billion lawsuit against Senate President Akpabio and his senior legislative aide, Mfon Patrick, accusing them of defamation. Her lawyer, Victor Giwa, cited a Facebook post by Patrick titled, Is Local Content Committee of the Senate Natasha’s Birthright? The post allegedly mocked Akpoti-Uduaghan, implying that she saw her senatorial position as merely an opportunity to wear makeup and revealing outfits to the chamber.

Giwa described the post as defamatory and damaging, arguing that it had tarnished his client’s reputation among her colleagues and the public.

The controversy escalated further on Friday when Akpoti-Uduaghan appeared on Arise Television’s Morning Show and accused Akpabio of sexual harassment. She also claimed that some Senate colleagues warned her to accept the seat reassignment, hinting at a broader plot against her.

In response, Unoma Akpabio dismissed the allegations as baseless, insisting that her husband is a disciplined man who respects women.
