Timileyin Ajayi Denies Charges in Salome Adaidu’s Murder Case

Timileyin Ajayi, the prime suspect in the murder of Salome Adaidu, was arraigned at the High Court of Justice in Lafia, Nasarawa State. He is facing a charge of culpable homicide punishable by death under Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria.

During the hearing before Justice Simon Aboki, Ajayi pleaded not guilty. The court adjourned the trial to March 17–20 for further proceedings.

Speaking after the arraignment, the prosecuting counsel, Stanley Nwaforagwu, expressed confidence in the case, stating, "We have overwhelming evidence to sustain the charge, and we are optimistic that justice will be served." Defense counsel Joseph Tukur emphasized his role in ensuring the prosecution proves their case beyond a reasonable doubt, noting, “It is not my place to prove the case but to ensure the law is followed.” Representing the deceased’s family, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Jibrin Okutekpa highlighted the importance of the case, adding, “We are here to ensure justice is done.”

Ajayi, 32, was arrested for the gruesome murder of his alleged girlfriend, Salome Adaidu, a 24-year-old NYSC member serving in Abuja. Salome was killed during a visit to Ajayi’s residence in the Papalana area of New Karshi, Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa State. Police reports revealed that Ajayi used a knife and machete to kill and dismember her body. He was apprehended on January 12, 2025, while attempting to dispose of her remains.

In a chilling confession during an interview, Ajayi admitted to the crime, claiming it was unplanned but fueled by jealousy over alleged infidelity. “I killed her because we don’t have each other all the time,” he stated. Ajayi added that he found incriminating chats on her phone, which led to his actions. Despite the nature of his crime, he showed no remorse, saying, “I don’t have any regrets because life is reciprocal.”

The case continues to attract national attention, with many calling for justice for Salome Adaidu.

January 27, 2025 Marketers May Abandon Dangote Fuel as Imported Petrol Hits ₦922/Litre

Marketers May Abandon Dangote Fuel as Imported Petrol Hits ₦922/Litre

Oil marketers have disclosed that as of Friday, the landing cost of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) was ₦922.65 per litre. This figure accounts for various expenses such as shipping, import duties, and exchange rates. The cost reflects a reduction of ₦32.35 compared to the ₦955 per litre offered at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s loading gantry.

This drop in landing costs is expected to influence retail prices and might encourage marketers to resume petrol imports. A prominent marketer, speaking anonymously, noted that the reduced cost of imported petrol often incentivizes dealers, making the importation route more appealing.

Last week, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery cited rising crude oil prices as the reason for the earlier increase in petrol prices from ₦899.50. However, the recent decline in landing costs offers some respite from global market and supply chain pressures.

Despite the reduction, retail petrol prices remain high in Nigeria, with major marketers selling between ₦990 and ₦1,010 per litre in the Federal Capital Territory. Data from the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria revealed that the on-spot import parity estimate for tanks was ₦922.65 per litre on Friday, down by 2.2% from the ₦943.75 recorded on Thursday. However, the average 30-day cost rose to ₦939.52 per litre, reflecting ongoing exchange rate and freight cost challenges.

Further analysis of depot petrol prices last week showed a reduction of ₦10 in loading costs. Nipco adjusted its price to ₦970 from ₦965 per litre earlier in the week, while Aiteo and Sahara closed at ₦960 per litre. Depots in Port Harcourt, Delta, and Calabar maintained prices ranging from ₦972 to ₦990 per litre.

Between January 21 and 22, 2025, oil marketers imported approximately 76.84 million litres of petrol, according to Nigerian Port Authority data. Vessels carrying 57,301 metric tonnes of fuel berthed at Apapa, Tincan, and Dangote terminals in Lagos.

The National President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), Billy Gillis-Harry, expressed surprise at the imports, highlighting an industry agreement to suspend imports for 180 days to allow the Dangote Refinery to demonstrate its production capacity. However, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) clarified that the directive was more of a mutual understanding than a binding agreement. IPMAN’s National Publicity Secretary, Chinedu Ukadike, emphasized that marketers are prioritizing cost-efficiency, and the current focus remains on sourcing the most affordable products.

January 27, 2025 ₦1.3bn Fraud: Police to Arraign Obanikoro’s Son, Others on February 27

₦1.3bn Fraud: Police to Arraign Obanikoro’s Son, Others on February 27

The Federal High Court in Lagos has scheduled February 27, 2025, for the arraignment of Gbolahan Obanikoro, son of Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, alongside four others, over allegations of a ₦1.35 billion fraud.

The other defendants in the case include Adejare Adegbenro, aged 51; Balmoral International Limited; M.O.B. Integrated Limited; and DDSS International Company Limited. They face five charges, including conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretenses, false representation, and fraud.

Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa set the new date after the defendants failed to appear for their scheduled arraignment on Friday. During the proceedings, the prosecution counsel, Momoh Bello, informed the court that the case was listed for the defendants' arraignment. However, due to their absence, Bello requested a bench warrant to force their appearance, claiming that all the defendants had been duly served.

Counsel for the fourth defendant (M.O.B. Integrated Limited), Joshua Abel, opposed the request, explaining that his client had received the court summons late on Wednesday and was only informed of the case on Thursday. He also noted that some of the company's directors were currently outside the country.

Justice Lewis-Allagoa reviewed the service records and pointed out that while the third and fourth defendants had been served, there was no proof of service for the first and second defendants, who are natural persons.

“The record of this court shows that service was effected on the third and fourth defendants, but it’s less than 48 hours since they were served. One was served as recently as yesterday. There is no proof that the first and second defendants have been served. The law requires personal service,” the judge ruled.

The judge directed the prosecution to regularize the service process for all defendants and adjourned the matter to February 27, 2025, for arraignment.

The Inspector General of Police, through the Special Fraud Unit in Ikoyi, Lagos, accused the defendants of conspiring between May and September 2013 to fraudulently obtain ₦1.35 billion from Access Bank Plc (formerly Diamond Bank).

The defendants allegedly misrepresented themselves to the bank, claiming they were engaged in importing vehicles from Dubai for sale in Nigeria. They purportedly stated that the funds were required to finance the importation of brand-new cars for resale.

The police further allege that the defendants unlawfully converted ₦1 billion of the bank’s funds for personal use, knowing or having reason to know the money was proceeds of unlawful activity.

The charges against them include violations of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud-Related Offenses Act, 2006, and the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. If found guilty, the defendants face severe legal penalties.
