NDLEA Arrests Businesswoman and Nollywood Filmmaker Over Alleged Illicit Shipments

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a Lagos socialite, 61-year-old Alhaja Aishat Feyisara Ajoke Elediye, on New Year’s Day at her mansion in Okota, Lagos. Her arrest followed the interception of a truckload of alleged illicit drugs transported by one of her staff members on the same day.

NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, in a statement, revealed that Alhaja Ajoke, known in social circles as "Iya Ruka," had been on the agency's wanted list for years due to her suspected leadership of a drug cartel operating out of Mushin, Lagos. Acting on intelligence, NDLEA operatives intercepted a truck carrying 44 jumbo sacks containing 1,540 kilograms of imported cannabis. The truck was driven by her employee, 41-year-old Abideen Adio. This led to a raid on her residence, located at 33 Adebayo Oyewole Street, Okota, where she was arrested.

Although Alhaja Ajoke outwardly appeared to be a legitimate businesswoman importing fabrics and shoes from China, investigations revealed her deep involvement in the illicit drug trade. She is also known as the "Iyalaje" of Blessing Sisters, an influential Lagos-based social club.

In another high-profile operation, NDLEA officers arrested US-trained filmmaker and motivational speaker Emeka Emmanuel Mbadiwe in a hotel room in Lekki. His arrest followed the earlier detention of his associate, Uzoekwe Ugochukwu James, who was caught at a warehouse in Ajao Estate, Ikeja, with a shipment of 33 parcels of Loud (a potent cannabis strain) weighing 17.3 kilograms. The shipment had arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on December 24, 2024, from the United States, concealed in large wooden boxes.

Meanwhile, in Ilorin, Kwara State, NDLEA operatives arrested 24-year-old graduate Khadijat Abdulraheem and a 20-year-old university student, Ayomide Morakinyo, for producing and selling drug-laced cupcakes to students. During a raid on their residence, 42 drug-infused cupcakes were seized.

Additionally, ex-convict Sodade Sunday Eniola, previously arrested for drug trafficking in June 2024, has been apprehended again for passport racketeering. NDLEA officers discovered 52 passports concealed in shoe soles and food items during inspections at the Lagos airport’s export shed. Further investigations led to the arrest of three others linked to the racket.

In another operation, NDLEA officers in Port Harcourt seized 316,800 bottles of codeine-based syrup from two containers during a joint inspection with customs and other security agencies. In Kano, operatives recovered 149,090 pills of tramadol and Exol-5 during a raid on a local dealer in Dala Local Government Area.

The NDLEA continues to intensify its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, with sensitization programs held in markets, mosques, schools, and workplaces nationwide. Chairman/CEO of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the agency's officers for their dedication to combating drug supply and demand, highlighting their significant contributions to national security.

Tinubu Reaffirms Stance on Subsidy Removal: ‘It Was Necessary’

President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his justification for the removal of the fuel subsidy, describing it as a "necessary" step to safeguard Nigeria's future. The subsidy removal, announced during his swearing-in ceremony in May 2023, led to a significant increase in fuel prices and sparked widespread protests and criticism.

Critics argue that the decision has caused severe hardship for many Nigerians. However, during a visit to Enugu State on Saturday, Tinubu defended the move, emphasizing its importance for the country’s long-term stability and growth.

Addressing stakeholders at the Government House in Enugu, Tinubu likened the nation to a family sharing a single house, stressing the need to build a sustainable foundation for both current and future generations. "You cannot spend the future of generations yet unborn in advance. Don’t bankrupt the nation before they are born," he stated.

Acknowledging the backlash, Tinubu expressed confidence in his ability to lead and bring together a capable team to rebuild the nation. "I know people will fight, grumble, abuse me, and everything, but I asked for the job. I know what it takes. I believe in myself, and I believe I can gather a very good team and build a nation," he affirmed.

EPL: Isak Shines in Newcastle’s Win Over Tottenham

Alexander Isak extended his impressive scoring streak as Newcastle overcame an early setback to secure a 2-1 victory over Tottenham, handing Ange Postecoglou’s side another home defeat and marking Newcastle’s sixth consecutive win across all competitions.

Tottenham struck first in the third minute when Pedro Porro’s precise in-swinging cross found Dominic Solanke, who headed home to give Spurs an early lead. However, Newcastle responded immediately, with Anthony Gordon equalizing just two minutes later. Gordon fired a low shot into the far corner past Spurs’ debutant goalkeeper, Brandon Austin, under the watchful eye of England manager Thomas Tuchel.

Controversy arose when Tottenham players appealed for a handball by Joelinton in the lead-up to Gordon’s goal. The officials ruled the contact accidental, with Joelinton’s arm deemed to be in a natural position.

Newcastle continued to press, and although Isak initially missed a chance from a Jacob Murphy cross, he made amends moments later. The Swedish striker capitalized on a deflected delivery from Murphy, slotting the ball past Austin to put Newcastle ahead. This goal marked Isak’s place in history as only the third Newcastle player to score in seven consecutive Premier League matches, joining legends Alan Shearer and Joe Willock.

Tottenham came out stronger in the second half and nearly equalized when Brennan Johnson hit the post from a tight angle after Martin Dubravka saved Pape Sarr’s long-range effort. Substitute James Maddison and Sergio Reguilon also came close, with Maddison curling a shot just wide and Reguilon firing off target late in the game.

Despite Spurs’ efforts, Newcastle’s defense held firm, condemning Tottenham to their fifth home league defeat of the season. Postecoglou’s side now faces mounting pressure, while Newcastle’s stellar form keeps their momentum alive in the Premier League.

January 4, 2025 Burnley Claim Bragging Rights with Victory Over Blackburn

Burnley Claim Bragging Rights with Victory Over Blackburn

Burnley triumphed over their East Lancashire rivals Blackburn with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Ewood Park. In a tightly contested derby, the decisive moment came in the 60th minute when Zian Flemming’s diving header, Burnley’s first effort on target, found the back of the net. The goal ignited celebrations among the 3,926 traveling fans.

Manager Scott Parker leaned heavily on his team’s resolute defense to maintain the advantage, and they delivered, successfully thwarting Blackburn’s numerous set-piece opportunities. Despite persistent pressure, Blackburn could not break through a defense that has conceded just five goals on the road this season. Their best opportunity fell to Lewis Baker late in the game, but his glancing header missed the target.

The win marked Burnley’s fourth consecutive victory at Ewood Park, reinforcing their dominance at the venue where they clinched the league title during their last visit. With performances like this, Burnley remains well-positioned to challenge for top honors this season, extending their unbeaten run to 13 matches. Meanwhile, Blackburn’s struggles continue, as they remain winless in five games and outside the play-off spots.

The match was a cagey affair, with limited chances on both sides. Blackburn started aggressively, forcing a series of corners, but Burnley’s defense stood firm. Jaidon Anthony’s early effort was blocked, while Amario Cozier-Duberry’s lively play saw him cut inside and unleash a deflected shot that went narrowly wide in the first half. Makhtar Gueye had a chance to make an impact but sent a looping header wide just before halftime.

The second half mirrored the first until Burnley broke the deadlock. Anthony delivered a cross from the right, finding Bashir Humphreys on the opposite flank, who delivered a pinpoint ball for Flemming to head into the roof of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Blackburn responded with relentless pressure, creating a chaotic goalmouth scramble that was ultimately smothered by Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford. Sondre Tronstad came close with a deflected shot, but Burnley held their ground. At the other end, Anthony’s powerful strike was parried by Aynsley Pears, while Baker missed a golden chance with a misdirected header in the 77th minute.

Despite Blackburn’s late efforts, Burnley held firm to secure a vital victory, maintaining pressure on league leaders Leeds while leaving Blackburn to rue missed opportunities in their push for a play-off position.
