NLC Warns of New Protest Over Electricity Tariff Increase

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to rally workers and citizens for a nationwide demonstration if the Federal Government implements its planned electricity tariff increase, labeling it as “economic aggression” against workers and the wider Nigerian population. This stance was echoed by the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), which cautioned the government against raising tariffs, arguing that Nigerians should not be charged for inadequate power supply.

Following its National Executive Council meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, on February 28, 2025, the NLC issued a statement on Sunday rejecting the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) “deceptive reclassification” of electricity users. The NLC accused the Ministry of Power and NERC of pushing consumers into higher tariff categories under the guise of enhancing services, while actually worsening economic difficulties. The statement criticized the ruling class for acting as agents of global capitalism, intent on intensifying Nigerians’ struggles through continuous tariff increases, heavier taxes, and unyielding economic pressure.

The NLC’s leadership declared that any move to raise electricity tariffs would face widespread opposition, instructing its National Administrative Council to immediately begin organizing protests and cautioning the government against provoking the public. The NLC also raised concerns about a recent 35 percent hike in telecommunications tariffs, reduced from an initial 50 percent proposal after negotiations with the government. However, it expressed doubts about the government’s reliability and warned that any violation of the agreed terms, effective March 1, 2025, would prompt the union to take action to ensure compliance.

The NLC stressed that Nigerian workers should not suffer due to inefficiencies in government and corporate operations. This position was supported by power sector workers, who also opposed the consumer reclassification, calling it an exploitative scheme to extract more money without improving services. The NUEE promised to resist tariff hikes and hinted at potential disruptions if the government moved forward.

The union was responding to comments from Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu, who revealed plans to standardize tariffs across Bands A, B, and C to address billing inconsistencies and attract investment. The NUEE questioned the minister’s focus, suggesting he might be overstepping into NERC’s regulatory role. Acting General Secretary Dominic Igwebike emphasized the union’s duty to address the issue, challenging the minister’s claim that tariff hikes were essential for sector liquidity amid ongoing challenges.

The NUEE recalled NERC’s 2024 justification that tariff increases only applied to Band A customers—15 percent of users consuming 40 percent of electricity—claiming the broader public would be unaffected. However, the union countered that the public, as end-users, would bear the indirect burden through higher costs passed on by Band A consumers, further straining their already limited purchasing power. It urged the minister to prioritize improving power sector efficiency over tariff adjustments.

Reports indicate Adelabu’s proposal aims to align Band B and C tariffs with Band A’s N206/KWh rate. Yet, this plan has drawn criticism from power consumers and the Organised Private Sector, who question the government’s persistent increases in commodity prices across multiple sectors.

Peter Okoye Denies Involvement in Jude Okoye’s Legal Woes Amid P-Square Feud

Peter Okoye, one-half of the now-defunct music duo P-Square, has distanced himself from claims linking him to his elder brother Jude Okoye’s current legal troubles. Jude, the former manager of the group, is embroiled in a fraud case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), facing allegations of misappropriating N1.38 billion. He was remanded in prison on Friday following a court session at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The controversy escalated when Paul Okoye, Peter’s twin and the other half of P-Square, publicly accused Peter of attempting to have Jude incarcerated. Speaking to the press after Friday’s court hearing, Paul pledged to work toward securing Jude’s release, intensifying the public spat between the estranged brothers.

However, Peter’s manager, Emem Kush, refuted Paul’s claims in an interview with Saturday Beat. “I don’t think Peter has any comments on this issue,” Kush stated. “The case revolves around the EFCC’s investigation into Jude Okoye. I fail to see what Peter has to do with it. Peter’s petition was solely directed at a company that has been collecting funds on his behalf. Let’s not conflate separate matters or create problems where none exist.” Kush further advised that the EFCC should be consulted for clarity on their findings, as they are the ones handling the investigation.

The unfolding drama adds another layer to the ongoing rift between the Okoye brothers, whose once-iconic music group disbanded amid personal and professional disagreements. As Jude’s legal battle continues, the public remains divided over the family feud playing out in the spotlight.

FA Cup: Bassey Thrilled to Find the Net for Fulham at Old Trafford

Calvin Bassey couldn’t hide his joy after scoring for Fulham in their Emirates FA Cup triumph over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday. The Nigerian international opened the scoring just before halftime, powering a header past the United defense to claim his first-ever goal in the prestigious competition.

Speaking to BBC, Bassey expressed his gratitude and excitement: “It’s a privilege and an honor to play here. Coming to a place like this is a blessing, and I’m absolutely thrilled.” Reflecting on his goal, he added, “I like to think I’ve got a poacher’s instinct. I tried to anticipate where the ball would land, got ahead of the defense, and headed it into the net.”

Bassey also acknowledged the quality of their opponents, saying, “They’re a talented side with a lot of skill. Our plan was to take the pace out of the game and keep the ball as much as possible, and it worked out in the end.”

Fubara Directs New Local Government Elections Following Supreme Court Ruling

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has assured residents of the oil-rich state that his administration will fully comply with the Supreme Court’s verdict after a thorough review of its Certified True Copy (CTC). This follows the apex court’s Friday ruling, which invalidated the local government elections held in the state on October 5, 2024.

During a state broadcast on Sunday, Fubara disclosed that he has consulted with his legal team, who anticipate receiving the CTC by Friday, March 7, 2025. He reiterated his government’s commitment to upholding constitutional principles and acting in strict adherence to the law.

In response to the Supreme Court’s decision, the governor has directed the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to assume immediate control of the 23 local government councils across Rivers State. The court’s ruling nullified the October 5, 2023, local government elections, prompting the need for interim administration.

STATEWIDE BROADCAST BY THE GOVERNOR OF RIVERS STATE, HIS EXCELLENCY, SIR SIMINALAYI FUBARA, GSSRS, ON SUNDAY, MARCH 2, 2025, ON THE RECENT JUDGMENTS OF THE SUPREME COURT.

1. My dear people of Rivers State, we are all aware of the recent Supreme Court judgments and pronouncements regarding aspects of the lingering political disputes in our dear State.

2. Although we disagree with the judgments, we are bound to obey the orders made therein as a law-abiding government.

3. Since inception, we have conducted the affairs of government within the framework of our Constitution, due process and the rule of law.

4. While we are not above mistakes because we are humans, we believe that we have not, as a government, done anything deliberately to trample on the rule of law or the hallowed principles of constitutional governance.

5. Accordingly, I have had a meeting with my team of lawyers, and they have assured me that the certified true copy of the judgments may be available to them by Friday, 7th March, 2025.

6. I assure you that upon the receipt of certified judgments, we shall study their ramifications and implement them without reservations to move the State forward.

7. Furthermore, given the outlawing of caretaker arrangements in the local government system, I hereby direct the Heads of Local Government Administration to immediately take over the administration of the 23 local government councils pending the conduct of fresh elections by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission.

8. I further direct the outgoing local government chairmen to formally hand over the levers of power to the Heads of Local Government Administration by Monday, 3rd March 2025.

9. Although our dear State seems to be back in trying times, I urge everyone to remain calm and peacefully go about with their legitimate daily activities as we continue to do everything in our power to advance our responsibilities to the citizens.

10. Thank you, and may God bless Rivers State

Fubara clarified that the HLGAs, who are civil servants, will oversee the councils’ operations until fresh elections are conducted by the Rivers State Electoral Commission. He also instructed outgoing council chairmen to formally hand over their responsibilities to the HLGAs by Monday (tomorrow). Amid the ongoing political tensions, the governor urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that his administration remains focused on governance and due process.

In a related development, the Supreme Court, in a separate ruling on Friday, barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other agencies from releasing funds to the Rivers State government. This decision was made until the state government demonstrates compliance with court orders, which the court accused it of flagrantly disregarding.

The judgment, delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, was supported by a unanimous decision from the five-member panel. The court also dismissed a cross-appeal filed by Governor Fubara, challenging the legitimacy of the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule. In its ruling, the court ordered Amaewhule and other elected members of the assembly to resume their legislative duties immediately.

Governor Fubara’s administration now faces the dual challenge of addressing the Supreme Court’s directives while maintaining stability and public confidence in Rivers State.
