EPL: Maresca Admits Error Nearly Cost Chelsea in Tottenham Clash

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confessed that his late defensive substitutions nearly undermined his team’s 1-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday. Maresca made the changes unaware that 12 minutes of stoppage time would follow.

“We had plenty of opportunities in the first half, but honestly, I messed up,” Maresca admitted to reporters. “I brought on the substitutes before noticing the added time. When I saw it was 12 minutes, I realized I’d acted too soon. Luckily, we held on for the win, and we’re thrilled.”

As the match neared its end, Maresca swapped out Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez for defender Tosin Adarabioyo and midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. The shift gave Tottenham an opening to intensify their pressure in pursuit of a late equalizer during the extended stoppage period.

Court Stops Pro-Wike Rally In Bayelsa

A Bayelsa State High Court in Yenagoa has issued an order barring associates of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, from organizing a large-scale rally in the state until a motion on notice is heard and resolved. Justice I.A. Uzakah granted the ex-parte motion on Thursday in Suit No. BYHC/YHC/CV/133/2025, halting the planned rally set for April 12, 2025, in Yenagoa.

The lawsuit, initiated by Bayelsa’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Biriyai Dambo SAN, names the NEW Associates (the rally’s organizers), Mr. George Turnah, and Minister Wike as the first and second defendants/respondents. Additional defendants include the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Commissioner of Police for Bayelsa State.

The court’s enrolled order declares: “An interim injunction is hereby granted, restraining the 1st and 2nd Defendants—whether acting alone, through their agents, associates, privies, representatives, or anyone acting on their behalf—from conducting, convening, coordinating, engaging in, organizing

The case has been adjourned to April 11, 2025, for further hearing.—from conducting, convening, coordinating, engaging in, organizing, participating in, holding, hosting, or facilitating any political assembly, rally, meeting, or gathering in Bayelsa State to show solidarity with, host, or celebrate the 2nd Defendant, pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice for Interlocutory Injunction.”

The case has been adjourned to April 11, 2025, for further hearing.

April 4, 2025 Supreme Court Removes Abure as Labour Party Chairman

Supreme Court Removes Abure as Labour Party Chairman

On Friday, the Supreme Court ousted Julius Abure from his position as National Chairman of the Labour Party. A five-justice panel delivered a unanimous ruling, overturning a prior decision by the Court of Appeal in Abuja that had affirmed Abure’s leadership.

The apex court determined that the Court of Appeal lacked the authority to recognize Abure as chairman, as the case revolved around the Labour Party’s internal leadership—a matter outside judicial oversight. The justices stressed that disputes over party leadership are internal affairs beyond the judiciary’s purview.

The Supreme Court allowed the appeal brought by Senator Esther Usman and another party member, deeming it valid. It further noted that, based on the evidence presented, Abure’s term as chairman had already lapsed. As a result, the court dismissed the cross-appeal lodged by Abure’s faction of the Labour Party.

Court Bars Police, SSS from Inviting, Arresting, or Detaining Rivers COS Ehie

A Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt issued a ruling on Wednesday, barring the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), and their agents from arresting, inviting, or detaining Edison Ehie, Chief of Staff to the suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The order also applies to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, the Nigeria Police Force, the Police Service Commission, and the State Director of SSS in Rivers State, all named as defendants in the case.

Justice I. Igwe delivered the ruling after hearing arguments from Damian Okoro, SAN, counsel for Ehie, with no representation from the defendants. The court granted Ehie permission to serve legal documents to the defendants outside the court’s jurisdiction, specifically in Abuja, via Red Star Express Courier Service. The judge also issued an interim injunction preventing the defendants and their associates from further actions against Ehie related to an alleged arson at the Rivers State House of Assembly on March 29, 2023, or statements made by Dr. George Nwaeke, former Head of Service, around March 27, 2025, or by anyone else thereafter. This restriction holds pending the hearing of a motion for an interlocutory injunction.

The court further mandated both parties to maintain the status quo as it existed on March 30, 2025, until the motion is heard. Ehie was required to provide an undertaking of N2 million to compensate the defendants if the case is later deemed frivolous. The substantive matter was adjourned to April 30, 2025, for further proceedings.
