10th Senate President’s U-18 Unity Cup Kicks Off on Nov 10

The 10th Senate President’s U-18 Unity Cup is set to kick off on November 10, running through November 17 in Abuja. Dubbed the “Renewed Hope Edition,” this landmark tournament, organized by the Grassroot Sports Federation, South-South, aims to promote unity in diversity while nurturing young football talents.

With 13 teams competing for the top prize, the event promises a showcase of skill, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. Tournament coordinator Hon. John Bassey Ekpenyong outlined the goals of the event: fostering unity, discovering emerging talents, creating employment opportunities through football, and addressing youth restiveness.

Ekpenyong also thanked the National Assembly leadership, particularly Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio GCON, along with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, for their dedication to sports development. Their support, as evidenced by the re-establishment of the National Sports Commission, highlights a commitment to advancing sports across Nigeria.

“The participating teams, selected from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones with two teams per zone and a special team from the host city, Abuja, reflect the rich diversity and talent across the country. This tournament offers young athletes a platform to showcase their abilities, opening doors to a promising future in football,” Ekpenyong said.

Honoring Senator Akpabio, who serves as life patron of the Grassroots Sports Federation, South-South, Ekpenyong recalled Akpabio’s unwavering support for grassroots sports, a legacy dating back to his tenure as Akwa Ibom State Governor, during which over 200 players benefited.

With excitement building, football enthusiasts and grassroots sports advocates are ready for a week of thrilling matches, inspiring performances, and a celebration of unity through the beautiful game. This tournament not only highlights the raw talent of young Nigerian athletes but also stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment for the nation’s youth.

October 28, 2024 Manchester United Sack Erik Ten Hag

Manchester United Sack Erik Ten Hag

Manchester United has parted ways with Erik ten Hag following a disappointing start to the season. The decision was made on Monday, marking the end of his two and a-half-year tenure at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag's dismissal comes after a string of unsatisfactory results, leaving United in 14th place in the Premier League table. He was appointed in April 2022 and successfully guided the club to two domestic trophies: the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

Despite being supported by the new co-owners INEOS during the summer and receiving a contract extension through June 2026, the lackluster performance this season has ultimately led to his exit.

Troost-Ekong and Lookman Nominated for CAF Player of the Year Award

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong and forward Ademola Lookman have been nominated for the 2024 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Men’s Player of the Year award. They will compete against Morocco's Achraf Hakimi, Côte d'Ivoire's Simon Adingra, and Guinea's Serhou Guirassy for this prestigious honor.

Lookman's nomination comes on the heels of his impressive performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he netted three goals to help Nigeria reach the tournament final. He also made history in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final, scoring a hat-trick and becoming the first player to achieve this feat in an Europa League final, leading Atalanta to victory as the first Italian club to win the tournament.

Troost-Ekong, who was named the 2023 AFCON Player of the Tournament, also scored three goals during the competition. The CAF Awards ceremony is set to take place in Marrakech, Morocco, on December 16.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles Rise Three Places in Latest FIFA Rankings

The Super Eagles have climbed three spots in the latest FIFA rankings, now sitting at 36th globally. This rise comes after their 1-0 victory over Libya in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifier earlier this month. On the continental stage, Nigeria is ranked fourth in Africa.

At the top of Africa's rankings, Morocco’s Atlas Lions lead, placing 13th in the world, followed by Senegal at 20th. Egypt (30th), Nigeria (36th), and Algeria (37th) round out the top five African teams.

FIFA highlighted further progress for African teams, noting significant jumps for Comoros (108th) and Sudan (110th), both climbing 10 places after strong performances in their recent AFCON 2025 qualifiers.

Globally, Argentina maintains the number one spot, followed by France. Spain ranks third, while England, Brazil, and Belgium complete the top six. Portugal is seventh, the Netherlands eighth, Italy ninth, and Colombia tenth.

Other notable movers in the rankings include Algeria (37th, up 4), Peru (38th, up 5), and Greece (42nd, up 6). Cameroon also re-entered the top 50, rising four places to 49th.

The October 2024 rankings follow a packed month of football, with qualifiers for both the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the AFCON 2025. FIFA reported that October saw 32 World Cup qualifiers, 47 AFCON qualifiers, 79 Nations League matches, and 17 friendlies, contributing to significant changes in the rankings.
