Virgil Van Dijk And Raheem Sterling Win PFA Awards

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been crowned PFA Player of the Year for 2018-19, with Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling winning the Young Player of the Year award.

The 27-year-old defender has played in all of Liverpool’s 36 league games this season, helping the Reds to a league-best 20 clean sheets.

The Dutchman signed for Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for £75m, a transfer fee his performances have vindicated, with Liverpool losing just one Premier League game so far this season, against Manchester City in January.

Liverpool and City players dominated the shortlist for the award, with Van Dijk’s team-mate Sadio Mane, City trio Sterling, Sergio Aguero and Bernardo Silva, and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard all in contention.

Sterling was considered Van Dijk’s main competition for the prize, with the England forward scoring 17 goals and making 10 assists in his 32 league appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side.

The 24-year-old was up for the same award last season, but pipped to it by team-mate Leroy Sane

CLUBS TO DISCUSS EUROPEAN PROMOTION AND RELEGATION
April 26, 2019 IFMNEWS
A European football pyramid with promotion and relegation to the Champions League is to be discussed by leading clubs.

European Club Association (ECA) chairman Andrea Agnelli wrote to the body’s 232 members to discuss changes from 2024.

The ECA has called a meeting of the clubs on 6-7 June.

The organisation wants to hear views on “principles we feel are fundamental to the future of European football”.

These include the creation of a “pyramidal Pan-European league system with continuity and opportunity to grow from within” and the “enhancement of mobility and dynamism across the system through carefully applied promotion and relegation”.

Agnelli also says new competitions have to be “an inclusive platform for all clubs, based on sporting meritocracy, not historical privilege”, and that “symbiosis” must be maintained with the domestic leagues.

The ECA, which has denied reports in the past that it plans to create a closed league with guaranteed places for the biggest clubs, said discussions were at an early stage.

The English, French and Spanish leagues – and the European Leagues umbrella group – have opposed such proposals, saying domestic football is more popular with fans.

PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLERS ASSOCIATION SET TO GATHER EVIDENCE OF RACIST ONLINE ABUSE

Players have been asked to send evidence of racist online abuse to the Professional Footballers’ Association to demonstrate to governing bodies the severity of the issue.

Following Friday’s 24-hour social media boycott by professional footballers, the PFA wants continued player support and has set up an email address to allow union members to report racism.

The PFA is preparing to take its anti-racism message to social media sites, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, and is in the process of arranging meetings for next month.

According to the PFA, more than 90 million people were reached by the first stage of the #Enough campaign, with David Beckham, Eden Hazard and Dele Alli among those joining last week’s social media boycott.

Dele Alli Pulls Out of England Squad With Injury

Dele Alli has withdrawn from the England squad for Tuesday’s friendly against Switzerland with a minor muscle strain.

Alli has returned to Tottenham for further treatment in the hope he will be available for their Premier League return against Liverpool at Wembley on Saturday.

He managed to get through 90 minutes in the 2-1 Nations League defeat but his absence will lead to an additional change for Tuesday’s Kick It Out international at the King Power Stadium.

Gareth Southgate had already brought in Leicester Pair Ben Chilwell and Demarai Gray into his squad for the match on their home ground.

He is not expected to add any further players to his squad amid reports that Southgate could make as many as nine changes to his side against the Swiss.

Chilwell and Gray are among players who could secure a senior debut, with goalkeepers Alex McCarthy and Marcus Bettinelli also hoping to complete their rise to full England honours.

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw will miss the game after sustaining a head injury in Saturday’s game.

Shaw left the England camp on Monday following the concussion he suffered after a nasty collision with Spain right-back Dani Carvajal.

He had reported back to St George’s Park for monitoring but was released to Manchester United after showing no ill-effects.
