Serena to meet Andreescu in US Open final

Serena Williams will face Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu for the US Open title as the American set herself up for another attempt to clinch a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam singles title.

Williams, who turns 38 this month, cruised into a 10th US Open final Thursday by brushing aside fifth seed Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-1, earning her 101st win at the tournament to draw level with Chris Evert for the most in history.

Williams is seeking to match Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 major titles and will play 19-year-old Andreescu, who defeated Belinda Bencic 7-6 (7/3), 7-5, on Saturday in her bid for a record seventh US Open triumph.

“To be in yet another final, it seems honestly crazy. But I don’t really expect too much less,” said Williams, who is through to her 33rd major final.

Parlour warns Abraham: Don’t dump England for Nigeria

Ray Parlour, has warned Chelsea striker, Tammy Abraham, against ditching the England national team for the Super Eagles.

Abraham has started off the 2019/20 season with Chelsea on a blistering form, scoring four goals in four games, which has attracted interest from Nigeria.

The Nigeria Football Federation have been trying to lure the Chelsea striker, who has two non-competitive caps for England to switch allegiance.

Speaking on Talk Sport’s programme, The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Parlour said Abraham would get his chance with the Three Lions if he remained patient.

“If he keeps scoring goals, he certainly will get into the England squad because Jamie Vardy is obviously retired and they’re lacking a little bit up front,” he told TalkSport.

“He’s got an opportunity to be in the squad, but obviously he won’t be in front of Harry Kane.”

Parlour, however, believes Abraham should stick with England, having played for them at the age grade levels.

“Once you start as a youngster to play for a country, I think you should stick with them,” Parlour added.

“It’s up to the player; he’s looking at this situation, looking forward, whether he’ll get an opportunity, but he said no, I want to try and play for this country (England). “It’s a battle, because there are a lot of good players at England, and it’s not easy to get into the squ

US Open 2019: Rafael Nadal beats Diego Schwartzman to reach US Open semi-finals

Rafael Nadal remains the favourite to win the US Open and move within one on Roger Federer’s tally of 20 Grand Slams after a hard-fought quarter-final win over Diego Schwartzman.

Spanish second seed Nadal won 6-4 7-5 6-2 against the Argentine 20th seed.

But he was made to work as Schwartzman twice rallied from four-game deficits in a stuffy Arthur Ashe stadium.

Nadal, 33, will next play Italy’s 24th seed Matteo Berrettini, who beat Gael Monfils in their last eight clash.

Three of the men’s semi-finalists – Berrettini, Grigor Dimitrov and Daniil Medvedev – have never played in a Grand Slam final.
