NFF reinstates Salisu after bribery ban

The Nigeria Football Federation has reinstated Salisu Yusuf to the national team after serving a one-year ban for receiving bribe.

The NFF made this known in a press statement by its spokesperson, Ademola Olajire, on Thursday.

Salisu was in August 2018 caught on camera accepting cash from men who posed as football agents to select two players for his Morocco 2018 African Nations Championship squad.

He was ordered to pay a fine of $5,000 by the federation after the NFF Ethics and Fair Play Committee ruled that the coach received   $1,000 from the men.

Though the NFF didn’t state that Salisu would take over as the Eagles coach, the federation bade coach, Imama Amapakabo farewell.

Imama was Salisu’s assistant in the U-23 national team and the CHAN team before the ban.

In the absence of Salisu, Imama led the U-23 Eagles to qualify for the 2019 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Sudan 5-0 in Asaba on Tuesday.

With Salisu’s return, Imama is expected to return to his position as an assistant coach of the U-23 team.

Announcing Salisu’s return on Thursday, NFF said, “The federation has noted that the Chief Coach of the Super Eagles, Salisu Yusuf, has now fully served the one-year suspension clamped on him last year.

“The federation thanked coach, Imama Amapakabo for his sterling efforts while in charge of the U-23 National Team in the absence of the suspended Yusuf, and for eventually seeing to the team’s qualification for the U-23 AFCON.”

I don’t know my Eagles future –Rohr

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has disclosed that his future in charge of the Super Eagles is uncertain following the contract he signed with the Nigeria Football Federation, which ends in June 2020.

Rohr stated that he would be busy with his qualifying campaign during the period his contract was scheduled to end.

The German, who took charge of the Eagles in 2016, signed a contract extension after his first two-year deal expired in 2018. During an interview with BBC World Football, the gaffer indicated he was ready to continue his job as Eagles coach.

The coach said he had plans to achieve “big things” with the Eagles, adding that making Nigeria qualify for the 2021 African Cup of Nations was a priority.

He said, “I have a lot I want to achieve; big things with Nigeria. I can see what the future can produce. I hope I can work with (NFF) President Pinnick (Amaju) to achieve those things. But I don’t know my situation after June 2020. We have to see what happens.

“As it is known, my current contract with the Super Eagles runs till June 2020. This ends right in the middle of the qualifying campaign for the 2021 AFCON.

“It’s a bit strange that I have a contract ending while I have to qualify for the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.”

Naomi Osaka sacks coach

Japanese tennis superstar Naomi Osaka announced on Friday she was splitting with her coach, her second break-up this year as she battles for form and slips down the world rankings.

On the eve of the Pan Pacific Open tournament in Osaka, western Japan, the 21-year-old announced she would no longer be working with Jermaine Jenkins, who joined her team after her triumph at the Australian Open in January.

Osaka had already caught the tennis world by surprise when she announced she was parting ways with coach, Sascha Bajin, who had overseen her stunning rise to win two grand slams — the US Open in 2018 and the Australian Open title in January.

But her results since Melbourne have been patchy. She lost in the third round of the French Open to Katerina Siniakova from the Czech Republic, ranked 41 places below her in the world rankings.

She then suffered a humiliating first-round exit at Wimbledon to Yulia Putintseva from Kazakhstan before crashing out of this month’s US Open in the last 16 to Swiss player Belinda Bencic.

Her form outside the slams has hardly been better, losing two quarter-finals during the US hard-court season that has seen her slip from the number one position in the world rankings to number four in the latest list.

The split with Jenkins came as Osaka returned home for the Pan Pacific Open where she reached the final last year.

Her main challengers in the event will be fellow top-10 players Kiki Bertens and US sensation Sloane Stephens.

Angelique Kerber, who beat her in the first round in 2017, is also in the draw for the competition that runs between September 16 and 22.
